That yeye GTBANK just charged me 219.96 per dollar. I think I should just stay away from Gtbank and Access Bank for now.

I bought some goods a few weeks back and was charged 207 and thought that was the end of the deadeals. About 2-3 weeks later, the bank re-charged me at the rate of 225 claiming the merchant just came for his money.... that's daylight robbery.

Abeg, any sane bank with good dollar rate? I need them urgently.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! That's just wrong! So wrong.

Anyways we are hearing StanbicIBTC is 199.5 and Diamond Bank yesterday 204.08. Honestly, those are the lowest i know now... I think someone mentioned Zenith bank doing 199.8 earlier

stanley083:

Secondly, we have refund proper. In this case, you have paid the money and the merchant has received it. And then is sending the money back to you. Now here is the thing, when u are paying the merchant today for example. And the dollar rate is say 205 naira, the merchant doesn't know and doesn't care how much the naira value is, his own is that he is getting his own let's say $100. So meaning you spent 20,500. But if he needs to refund that money back to you, how much do u think he will pay? He isn't going to pay 20,500 because to start with he might not have even heard of naira before. He is going to pay $100 back to ur bank. When ur bank gets that money let's say next week on the 27th of March and their dollar conversation rate is 250, you will get back 25,000 and not 20,500. Same thing if new rate is 185. U will get 18,500.

I write facts i know, and from experience. Cheers! wink

Yh, that's true. The transaction was a proper refund.

Habeebpain:

But in a situation whereby they charge you with a different rate for purchase and use a different rate for refund, I think that's robbery. GTB refunded me at a rate of 199 but still charged 215 for transactions made that day.

Exactly, my point. And Access bank did refunds with the prevailing exchange rates, I got more than the amount I paid initially.

That's how GTbank does their stuff o. When I shop using their Mastercard, I get an email immediately after checkout that the said amount has been authorized, the amount is held in the account but does not reflect in available balance.

The 'when the merchant comes for his money', they process the charge at the prevailing exchange rates. It pays if the rates have improved but most times you pay more cos the rates is always on the rise. Before this time, I can cancel the order and get my money back.

Access bank charges the account immediately, so in case the exchange reduces before the item ships, you can't cancel the order so as to place the order at the new rates.

Exactly yo! Happened to me not once, not twice.

tumababa:

hope you know that for cancelling the order after you have already been charged, you should expect a loss of like 8k when you get a refund. cancelling an order immediately you have been charged is not a good idea for a naira account

tumababa:

sorry for the lie. let us know when you get your refund and how much you gained.

@tumababa see wetin him write oh. He got more money when he was refunded because naira lost value. When i talk am, e be like say na me be James Bond.

Seems more people should stay away from GT Bank. I believe about 80% of people that shop online use GTB Mastercard. That's why they can afford to do Jackie Chan with your money.

Can confirm today again Diamond Bank VISA Card rate. 204.08. No change since 2 days apparently.

i bought an app of $0.99 from playstore got the alert below

Debit Alert!
Acc#: ******4951
Amt:202.04
Desc: GOOGLE *Afterlight
Time:22/03/15 8:15 AM
Avail Bal: XXXXX

So 99% of $1 is 202.04.
Which means 100% is (202.04 x 100) / 99 = 204.08

I think I'm starting to like this bank. Lol.

seems I would consider diamond too.....gtb robbed me and it still hurts till date.

if only paypal can allow us fund our paypal accnts without having to extract funds from our bank accts everytime.

for now I only leave the exact amount I want to pay with in my gtb account. when they don't see money, they can't take it.

Lol I was gonna suggest that sef. Leave around the exact amount. I'm happy with Diamond Dollar rate so far. That GTB thing isn't cool. Never happened with Ecobank even.

I saw a StanbicIBTC newspaper advert a few days ago showing. It showed only verve and mastercard. So I'm guessing it's MasterCard, maybe they don't even give VISA. Dats what most banks are doing now, retreating to only one card. Even Ecobank has stopped giving VISA Card, mine is expiring in October and they said they won't renew it. The main reason they switched to Master was PayPal tho.
My Ecobank verve card is still very much precious to me. Using it on Quickteller app on my phone. Seamless. It's advisable to always have a verve and a master/visa card, preferably visa tho cause verve is the best for local transaction. But worldwide, VISA is more acceptable.

He is correct.

So i made some orders on Amazon today. Amazon's rate is N208.6, they charged the same amount when I checked out in Naira

I bought some other stuffs but I tried checking out in dollars. When I checked out in dollars, they charged N215. Normally, Amazon usually charges than the normal exchange rates when you check out in Naira before now, things have changed for now.

Bought some stuffs on Aliexpress today also and na N210 dem charge.

Its enough to say Diamond's N204 is the median charge, I can go with the bank.

Wait oh, are u saying that on Amazon, no matter what card or bank u are using, if you check out in Naira you will be charged an Amazon fixed rate? But if you checkout in dollars then ur bank will decide according to their own conversion rate? Or is it only for GT Bank?
Sorry if the question sounds stupid but I've not bought Anything on Amazon.

Mizzzbeee:

I might do so too. But judging from what access bank did. I think it's wise to monitor it for sometime first. But if Diamond Bank can stay steady at 204.08. Mhen! I don't have a problem with that oh. Zenith will chill first. Lol.

Yes, if you check out in Naira, you will be charged the Amazon fixed rate. Amazon clearly states that the rate includes their fees and charges, this usually translated to paying more than the exchange rate determined by the bank if you check out in dollars.

With my experience today, that seems to have changed and the Amazon rate is better.

BTW, I used Access for all my transactions today. It's been a while I used my Gtbank card for any online payment, I've noticed in a long time that their rates are higher. However, I'm sure if I use it and check out in Naira, I'll be charged at Amazon's rates.

You think it's higher? Chinos charges $50 flat rate for a laptop, I pay $35. He charges $30 for a tablet, I pay $15. I understand that he has to add a commision as profit.
