Igbo Leaders Applauded Oba Of Lagos As He Delivered Anti-Igbo Speech by MalcoImX(op): 11:01pm On Apr 07, 2015
Mr. Akiolu had told a gathering which had the Eze Ndi-Igbos (Igbo traditional rulers) of all the local government areas in Lagos State that they should cast their votes for his chosen governorship candidate or “perish inside the lagoon”.
The Oba supports the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Akinwunmi Ambode.
“On Saturday, if anyone of you goes against the Ambode I picked, that is your end. If it doesn’t happen within seven days, just know that I’m a bastard and it is not my father who born me,” Mr. Akiolu told the gathering.
“The one you have done before, he’s my son. Jonathan is my son and I speak to him every day. But, this Saturday, by the grace of God almighty Allah, I am the owner of Lagos and the owner of this…for the time being.”
As the Oba spoke, there were murmurs in the audience.
But Mr. Akiolu continued, determined to get his message across.
“Listen. Because this is an undivided chair. The palace belongs to the dead, the living and those coming in future.
“On Saturday, if anyone of you, I swear in the name of God almighty Allah, goes against my wish that Ambode, Insha Allahu, will be the next governor of Lagos State, the person is going to die inside this water.”
The audience, including the Igbo chiefs, applauded.
The Oba went ahead. “I’m not ready to beg, appeal to anybody o. And that’s why Asiwaju and the governor said, I said that is your own. Even the two of them they cannot disobey me. Nobody knew how I picked Ambode. Jimi (Agbaje) is my blood relation and I told him in a plain language he can never be governor in Lagos for now.
“The future belongs to God. I am not begging anybody to go, but you must not, I repeat… what you people cannot do in Onitsha, what you cannot do in Aba or anywhere…
Another round of applause erupted in the room.
“If you do what I want, Lagos will continue to be prosper for you. If you go against it, you will perish in the water. Finish.” The audience responded with chants of “Kabiyesi o.”
When it was time for the Igbo leaders to respond to the Oba, there was uproarious laughter in the room.
Gordion Ojiako, the spokesperson of the Eze Ndi Igbos in Lagos, promised Mr. Akiolu that they would vote massively for the APC during Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
“Kabiyesi, we are promising you. Why we came all of us is for you to see our faces. If we say we don’t want (on) Saturday…we can’t come here,” Mr. Ojiako, the Eze Ndi Igbo in Amuwo Oriade, said.
The Igbo leader asked his colleagues, “By Saturday, all of us are going to vote whooooo?” They chorused, “Ambode!”
“Ehen! And we tried. Even when we were trying for the national… Kabiyesi you can see this paper, this is the rally we did. This is the rally we did, commissioner can testify.
“So we are telling you that coming Saturday we are going to show you the way it used to be.
“And why we’ve come here today sir, Kabiyesi, is to come and congratulate and thank you for being our father in Lagos. We don’t need to talk much because after Saturday, Sunday we come for party before you do handover.”
The Igbo leaders then broke into a victory song, “Winner oooo winner oooo…”
The Oba joked that Mr. Ojiako should come to Sunday’s victory party with his “young daughter”. There was more laughter in the room.
The monarch’s speech came under severe criticism with Nigerians lambasting him for his utterance. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, told him to apologise to the Igbo people in Lagos “without delay”.
On Monday, when PREMIUM TIMES asked Mr. Ojiako why they were not offended by the Lagos monarch’s statement, he said it would be wrong to challenge the king inside his palace.
“We will go back and convene a meeting of Igbo stakeholders and respond to him appropriately,” Mr. Ojiako said.

Isn't this what some of us have been saying? Were they supposed to beat up the Oba in his palace? Actually not up to 3 people laughed at that statement and the greetings came from those sitting besides the Oba, probably his Yoruba aides.

Nervous laughter is laughter evoked from an audience's expression of embarrassment, alarm, discomfort or confusion, rather than amusement.
Nervous laughter is a physical reaction to stress, tension, confusion, or anxiety. Neuroscientist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran states "We have nervous laughter because we want to make ourselves think what horrible thing we encountered isn't really as horrible as it appears, something we want to believe."
People laugh when they need to project dignity and control during times of stress and anxiety. In these situations, people usually laugh in a subconscious attempt to reduce stress and calm down

Why didnt they protest at the palace grounds na? . . .
shocked cheesy cheesy You expect them to challenge the Oba? Have you ever been to the palace? I watched the video briefly, but couldn't really make out the location of the speech. Trust me sha, if you enter the palace and see the Oba on his throne, and you see all the ceremony, the chieftains and palace guards, plus the praise singer that only walks backwards so as never to turn his back on the Kabiyesi. . . Anyway, that's what it was like during Oyekan's reign. You can't try it!

Let's all get along sha. The palace issued an explanation. I hope my Igbo brothers and sisters will continue to live peaceably and prosperously in Eko land.

The palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has issued a statement, clarifying the Oba’s comments on his alleged threat to Igbos in Lagos to vote the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode or die in the lagoon.

Below is the statement;

THE PALACE MAKES FURTHER CLARIFICATION ON THE STATEMENT BY THE OBA OF LAGOS. ‎

My attention has been drawn to a publication in a national newspaper where HRM Oba Riliwanu Akinolu was alleged to have threatened Igbos in Lagos to make them vote for Ambode.

Last Sunday, all honorary Eze Ndigbos in Lagos paid a courtesy call to HRM Oba Akinolu. At the meeting the visitors praised the Oba for his fatherly support for and cooperation with Igbos in. Lagos. They assured him of their continued good neighborliness with other tribes in Lagos and support everything that’ll further strengthen that harmony.

Oba Akiolu on his part acknowledged the enviable performance of Governor Fashola and his contribution to the growth of investments in Lagos. He gave the assurance that he is not disturbed or angry with South-East and South- South votes for President Jonathan as perceived by the Eze Ndigbos. The Obas thereafter called on the Igbos chiefs to show appreciation to Lagos State by supporting his candidate Mr. Ambode for continuity of excellence as they have earlier promised.

He assured them of his continued support‎ and assistance where needed and the meeting ended with the traditional breaking of kolas, alligator pepper, and bitter kola and pouring of liberation on the ground. It was within this context that that the tradition of Lagos with regard to the lagoon came up. It was noted that whoever works against the throne and the interest and peaceful co-existence of Lagos would end up in the lagoon as per tradition.

2.Oba Akiolu stated further that the Igbo people have not betrayed the throne. Lagos has also not betrayed the Igbo people. Lagos has done so much to make the Igbos comfortable and to prosper. For this, we expect reciprocal respect and understanding. The Oba of Lagos prays that the Lagoon and the throne will continue to bless and protect all those who reside and visit Lagos.

3. Oba Akiolu is the father of all irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion. In Lagos, we have an old traditional proverb that relates to the Lagoon. The Lagoon is unique to Lagos. The proverb stresses the need for unity and understanding when you do business in an environment and in this case when you live and do business in Lagos.

Oba Akiolu prays for peace for the land of Lagos and prosperity for all its inhabitants.

Chief Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose,
Opeluwa of Lagos

But they seemed relaxed and at a certain stage were even singing. I can't take this Colynzo. I take the measure of a man to be upright and own up to your actions. There are people who I am sure would agree to being intimidated or afraid, if it were so. That to me is better representation than this hypocrisy.

Clearly those men did not feel intimidated or threatened , they were even laughing and joking with the Oba and I won't be suprised if they had met with him before. For that chief to even go ahead and promise his word and then the singing of winner o.

Igbos asks your leaders to say the truth.

That was clearly a meeting between colleagues who were laughing and joking

The video did not show who was applauding.

Could have been anyone.

Besides do you want them to start shouting at the Oba, so that you will say that they have been disrespectful to their host?
They simply comported themselves.

If you begin to exchange words with a mad man, passersby will not be able to differentiate who the mad person is.
