Still trying to think of what medical syndrome presents with these signs. The swelling of the tongue itself is a mystery.
...with swelling of tongue? Hmm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scombroid_food_poisoning

In the worst cases, the poisoning may cause:

blurred vision
respiratory distress
swelling of the tongue
In rare cases, the poisoning may result in death. Preliminary results from an autopsy on Noelene and Yvana Bischoff, mother and daughter tourists from Australia who died suddenly in Bali in January 2014, has attributed their deaths to scombroid poisoning.

This rash of deaths MAY be the result of localized food poisoning, or contamination of the drinking water supply used by the affected villages.

All the same, it is vital that the World Health Organization is notified IMMEDIATELY about the mysterious deaths in Ondo State, so that teams of specialists can be expedited to the area to conduct urgent investigations aimed at narrowing down the cause of this frightening outbreak, and preventing its spread into Nigeria's general population.

It is already spreading into Nigeria's population. A victim escaped the town to Ekiti to seek care. Who knows how many people he came in contact with?

I'm glad you said your news source was 'popular Palm wine tent' grin...that's the local equivalent of beer palour news.

Forget school, autopsy might rule out absence of contagion, infection or disease outbreak but it doesn't prove those people weren't poisoned...deliberately through some wicked act or they might just have ingested something that came from possibly same source.

I don't believe your karma story. It is not true. They should not blame it on the gods or some wooden effigy. They are as dead as logs of wood which they are.

Ministry of health should not fold it's hands before that 'karma' takes more lives.

Ebola would have caused more havocs if we all had this sort of primitive and dangerous way of thinking. Just because 99% locals believed people died of karma doesn't make it true. It needs just one 'defiant' man to find the cause and cure.

Take it or leave it, it was not a case of any disease outbreak. I know them well and I can even tell you that irele people don't drink anyhow water as most of them drink from borehole water and not even wells. So forget about poisoning or whatever you and others are insinuating.
Let's just keep our fingers crossed .

lol.

Oh ho!! So, because i am an ENGINEERING STUDENT, I SHOULD FIND WHY MY PEOPLE ARE DYING. Why do we have DOCTORS TAKING MILLIONS PER ANNUM? Its like telling a medical student to think and find out why planes crash. C'mon, I STUDY ENGINEERING, NOT MEDICINE. tongue

You need to put your engineering knowledge to work. I am an engineer also but I was able to predict accurately that the reasons for the deaths was methanol poisoning just by reading about the symptoms. Check my earlier comment on this thread.

Identifying methanol poisoning is part of the secondary school chemistry syllabus, as an engineer you are supposed to study chemistry in secondary school.
