Nkem Owoh AKA Osuofia: A Good Or Bad Actor? by Nobody: 7:54am On Feb 28, 2015
Good day Nairalanders for your visit today, I know so many of us will be wondering why I gave this article such a title, because as far as Nollywood fans are concern, Nkem Owoh is a good… if not the best actor Nollywood has ever produced, even writing this epistle won’t change that. Nkem Owoh is ofcourse no doubt a good actor because he can actually create a character within himself, and he has even won an African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) in 2007 with the movie ‘Stronger than Pain’ acted alongside Kate Henshaw, which proves how good he is. This article of mine is somehow a question that needs answer, that’s where I’ll bring in the ‘bad,’ I know that it sounds weird on how I’ll say he’s a good actor and now ‘bad,’ it's no big deal for us audience whose work are to watch his movies and laugh our ass off, but producers, directors, actors/actresses, most especially editors that has worked with Nkem Owoh for the first time don’t find it easy at all working with him, producers tagged Nkem Owoh as editors nightmare when editing Nkem Owoh’s movies, even Mara Derwent , his co-star in Osuofia in London didn’t find it funny working with Nkem Owoh because of his way of interpreting scripts.

Many Nollywood audience are proud to say in public that Nkem Owoh does not follow dialogues in scripts, he follows only the script’s description, creating his own dialogue and that makes his acting awesome, to us audience we don’t give a damn whether he’s reading from the script or not, but how about actor/actress who is working with him, who is suppose to say his/her lines after Nkem’s own cue, that’s where the ‘bad’ jumps in. Kingsley Ogoro, producer and director of Osuofia in London, added in an interview with Paul Obazele years back on Legends of Nollywood, saying that directing Nkem Owoh is very hard especially when you’re a filmmaker working with him for the first time, because while directing Nkem Owoh, every angle shots come a whole new dialogue. Kingsley added that Mara Derwent complains while working with Nkem Owoh saying that she have not encountered such acting style since she started acting, that Nkem Owoh makes a fool out of script’s dialogues which they’re supposed to be reading from.

So back to my question, is Nkem Owoh a good or bad actor?

Nkem Owoh is simply the Best comedy Actor in Nollywood. He's very artistic.

He's a fine actor. We call him Ukwa here in my house because his first movie that we watched was Ukwa Achinaka around 2002. Been following his movies closely till recent...

Well i dnt show interest or fancy nollywood movies becos of their poor scripts and poor directing, but yet i still like some actors/actresses...NKEM OWOH UKWA OR OSUOFIA is one of them....Lol
I mean he got all the talent for entertainment. just name it : acting, singing, good humor....i even have some of his musics on my phone.
So anyone saying Nkem is not a good actor, it definitely mean that either he/she is clueless or dnt like nollywood movies

He's a legend in both Nollywood and Ghollywood circles. Nuff Said.

His knack for improvisation makes him stand out in my book and he is adept at making his roles seem so natural you could almost believe in the character he is portraying. His Osuofia character is evidence of his skill.

He is okay as an actor with limited range.

His only performance that I like is that of 'Stronger than Pain', where Kate Henshaw still outshined him. Not a fan of his onscreen comic antics.

Apparently. That's cold, bro. When I used to watch Nollywood, Nkem Owoh was the only actor that cracked me up every time, and that's saying a lot, cuz I'm not the laughing type. Calling him an actor with a limited range is tantamount to pissing on Nigerian movie Industry as a whole, cuz in his prime, he was the best.

"Cracking you up" doesn't make him a good actor. Go watch Basket mouth et al. if you want to laugh.

A comic actor is different from a comedian. Mr Bean is a good comedian; Ralph Fiennes in 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is a good comic actor.

A Nigerian example is Femi Jacobs in 'The meeting', that's good comic acting right there. I don't give thumbs up just because someone has stayed long in the industry.

Sadly, what many Nigerians look out for is cheap slapstick comedy.

And I repeat, he has limited range.

Art is subjective; no need arguing bro. Face your work.

That's just it, Nkem Owoh's acting is not slapstick like, he can inject humor even into serious situations. Would you call Will Smith's acting in MIB slapstick?

It's my opinion bro.

And is MIB a slapstick comedy in the first place? There are some moments of such but please find a better example.

Bro, this is not a debate whether Nkem Owoh is funny or not. My point is he is okay as an actor (seems acting in nigeria is about cracking people up lipsrsealed) but has a limited range!

I used Will Smith in MIB for comparison because that is the style of Nkem Owoh's acting so if you don't consider Will Smith a slapstick actor why label Nkem Owoh as one?

Yes you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to call you out on it.

This Sholay just like to sugar coat. Just say Nkem is a BAD actor! I just can't stand him! No one in my small family can stand him; his jokes comes off as stupid to me most times. Very very unfunny. undecided Worst of all, he'll be looking at the camera or someone off camera, that's the very basic thing not to do as an actor (before we even talk good or bad actor o), yet e no fit do.

I Like how he speaks, very direct! He is also funny!

But that's not the bone of contention here, the OP is about him following the script!

If Nkem Owoh's brand of African humor doesn't appeal to you, then 2 things are in play: It's either you're not an african or you don't have a sense of humor. Case closed.

Hahahahahahahahahaha so funny and true. " Seems acting in nigeria is about cracking people up"

Nkem owoh, for me is a love and hate affair. He talks to much and a lot of rubbish. His sarcastic and snobbish style appeals to me only if done well.

I only enjoyed 2 movies from him ever. Rosekate and john bull and anoda where he was a a strict professor who had no interest in getting married. The way he treated the kids in his class was rib cracking funny. Aside dat...dats all. So I guess I hate him more den.

That is a close minded and absolutely inane logic u have there. If u like crappy comedy that's ur business. Nkem owoh isn't the greatest...but in africa there really any comic actor...all are slapstick comedy. Story of the most talented continent indeed.

With gud directing and without those childish side tracks that makes it hard to take the movies seriously, his style cud elevated to greater heights. He has potentional. He's jux too unpolished

Lolz. Pot calling Kettle black. A typical Nigerian hypocrisy on full display. So I'm close minded, heh? Big deal, what about you though? You'd rather watch a Will Farrell and Chris Rock movies, than watch Osufia and co ply their own brand of humor, the kind that appeal to the African audience, because you'd somehow got it into your head that ours is inferior to theirs? Mehn... If I were you, I'd change my mentality Asap and learn to appreciate your roots, cuz inferiority complex doesn't pay.

Meanwhile Osufia is an icon in Nollywood, generally regarded as one of the best the industry has ever produced. So believe me when I tell you, he doesn't give a rat a$$ what y'all think of him. He has already made history. What about y'all?
