ILORIN – The Vice-Chancellor of the Universityof Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali has said that the solid education foundation put in place by the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, helped to put the old Western Region and its people ahead of other regions of the the federation till the present time. The university don therefore challenged the incoming federal government to emulate the vision of the late sage by giving education for all a priority, irrespective of tribe or religion.Speaking yesterday on the theme of the programme, “Connecting the Past with the Present for a Rewarding Future in Nigeria Education System”, at the annual Back to School programme of the Nigeria Universities Education Students’ Association (NUESA) of the University of Ilorin held in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the vice chancellor said theBack to School programme of the school was aimed to bring, to the fore, the importance of education to national development and fortunes, adding that no Nigerian child, be it boy or girl, should be excluded from getting a quality western education.Professor Ambali also pointed out that for any nation to be great, its citizens must be educated.Represented at the event by the Dean, Faculty of Education of the university, Dr. Alfred Akinbo Adegoke, the vice chancellor said that Chief Awolowo stood for provision of educational opportunity for all Nigerians.Professor Ambali, who lamented neglect of public elementary and secondary schools in the country by successive governments in the country, said that private schools had taken over, adding that elementary and secondary school education should be revived to achievesolid education foundation.According to him,”Every child must be given an opportunity to good and quality western education. And that’s what Chief Obafemi Awolowo stood for. He was the man who stood for education for all. One of the pillars ofhis philosophy, one of the visions he had, was to make education free for every child. And today, many of us are beneficiaries of free education that Chief Obafemi Awolowo startedin those days.“In all things he made, he was able to put the Western Region ahead because of the solid foundation of education that he laid for this country. Happily, there is a new government coming on board to build on the philosophy and vision of the sage because education is the foundation. For any nation to become a great nation, or to take her place in the comity of nations, for any nation to make a significant impact, that nation must have its citizens well educated. That’s the cardinal philosophy that Chief Awolowo stood for.“We are taking ourselves back to school, because it is the elementary schools that are neglect. I went to a public school while growing up. But today, public schools are being neglected that no parents want to send their children to public schools. The private schools have taken over. This is very very sad.We need to get back to the roots. Government needs to overhaul educational system and go back to elementary school because that’s the foundation. Government needs to spend money to train teachers and make sure that teachers are well paid. Government needs to make sure that the foundation of our education is solid. That’s why we are saying back to school today. And that’s why we are remebering issues of our education system, as you dress in your old school uniform, to remind us of the memories and the foundationwhich your elementary and secondary school had laid for you.“It’s our prayer that the Back to School programme and the vision of NUESA will be something that will move forward as a countryand we hope the new government will ensure that education takes its pride of place. And that education gets proper funding, teachers paid promptly and proper infrastructure is put in place, particularly at the elementary and secondary school level”, he said. Also speaking, the Director of Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Chief Dr. (Mrs.) TokunboAwolowo-Dosunmu, who was represented by Dean, Business School of Babcork University, Professor Ayandiji Aina, said that the Foundation believed that every child deserves right to quality education, adding that he was ready to partner with organisations that wouldpromote education in the country.Dr. Awolowo also frowned at over-prioritisation of education in the country, saying that it was one of the factors for high crime rate among youth, emphasising that the foundation encourages and promotes decency among Nigerian youth. Also in his lecture in honour of chief Awolowo and Aare Afe Babalola, a professor in the department of History and International Studies in Unilorin, R. A. Olaoye, said, “one cardinal philosophy of the Obafemi Awolowo foundation is to preserve and nurture the legacy of education of the late sagwe to fruition. In this regard, the hope of a rewardingeducation system in future is not lost. In the same vein, the gigantic stride of Chief Afe Babalola, in the establishement of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, is an indication that there will be light at the end of the tunnel”.Professor Olaoye, who said the government should “go back to the roots, pick up the pieces and review the policy for rewarding system of education in Nigeria”, added that theemphasis today was on Information and Communication Technology (ICT).“The world is also in the direction of knowldege-based economy. In all of these, theuse of computer and other ICT facilities would rule the future world of education not only in Nigeria but elsewhere in the world”, he said. sources:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/awolowos-solid-foundation-puts-western-region-ahead-of-others-till-now/ |

The West were never at any point in history, ahead of Ndiigbo in academics, unless you count Brazilians and Sierre Leon returnees as Yorubas. Maybe the university Don was comparing his Northern region with the SW. In that case, I agree with him. |

eazisky:sometimes stupidity seems to be the only word that can best describe some of you.Do you think people in this forum dont live in Nigeria or at worst dont visit the country from time to time.I didnt need say much,i can tell you aside from some core northern states,am yet to see any part of Nigeria where you have the number of street urchins(alaye boys)beggars, touts, hawkers etc than what is obtainable in Lagos,Osun,Abeokuta, not to mention Ibadan which has the highest number of unprotected street children in Africa. I try to avoid threads like this, because all it aims at is the promotion of ethnic jingoism.I wont say anything on education, the era of propaganda is over, people are beginning to see and know the truth about how educated each tribe may be!thanks to social media and main stream media. I wont comment further,in other not to burst some over bloated ego. |

[color=#1980BC] That foundation has since eroded away given the Jamb,Waec, MDG and other relevant stats...even the economic opportunties an average igbo is faced with and willing to harness far exceeds that of the yoruba.....it is no coincidence we dont live in mud and brown roofed village ghettos. pazienza:They always have been and still are . Let us take you and me for example you are an unrepentant irredeemable dullard and any time I find you on any thread ,as will be the case here again,I never fail to highlight what a brainless ,opinionated harridan you are. Always it is a pleasure which I shall again savour Refer yourself to the legal profession over the decades,(SANs),medicine, the arts etc your folk have always been embarrassing parvenus. Go and read Achebe's chest beating about how you supposedly "caught up" in his last tirade before death. This highlights your core sense of inferiority and need to compensate. We do not even notice you.. I shall continue to pray for you; that you are able to properly string coherent sentences together, forlorn intercession that that might be,I shall persevere |

http://pulse.ng/student/no-more-miracles-anambra-goes-tough-against-waec-miracle-centres-id2833560.html 'Miracle' and 'Special' centre operators in Anambra state will soon face a storm as the state has declared war on their operation. Anambra state Education Commissioner Prof. Kate Omenugha made the declaration when the state branch of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) paid her a courtesy visit. The commissioner warned private schools’ proprietors in the state who create special and miracle centres, thereby promoting examination malpractices. "Special and miracle centres would be fought against by the present administration. It is one of the visions of the government in the state. I will soon begin to visit schools to ensure that standard is maintained," Omegha said. According to her, the ministry is determined to stop their dubious way of conducting examinations. NAPPS President, Mr Sunday Anaekwe, promised that the association would support the ministry’s crusade against malpractices. Special and miracle centres are illegal examination bodies that help students get the desired results in national examinations like WAEC for an agreed sum, sometimes involving school proprietors and officials of examination bodies. |

http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=73243 Anambra to shutdown 486 special exam centres 0 By Our Reporter on July 22, 2014 National No fewer than 486 magic examination centres identified in Anambra State are to be shutdown by the state government as part of official measures to curb examination malpractices in the education sector. The state Commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, who gave the hint during the 10th anniversary of St. Joseph Academic Award for 2014, said these examination miracle centres had been aiding and abetting examination malpractices especially during West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations. Prof Omenugha, while commending the founder of St. Joseph Academic Award, Mr. Bath Nwibe said the decision to shutdown the magic centres was induced by the way their operators fashioned them to swindle unsuspecting but desperate candidates. His words: “We have government schools and approved private schools that are saddled with the responsibility of training our children to become functional members of our society. But with the emergence of these miracle centres, our children no longer study to pass examinations; rather they go to those places where they will be helped to pass examinations. We have set plans in motion to ensure that those examination miracle centres are closed down so that our children would imbibe the spirit and culture of success through hard-work.” Mr. Nwibe, an engineer, noted that the award was instated to ensure that the human resources given to the youths were guided to become real assets to the society. “This is by guiding them to develop the habit of hard-work early in life and thus, get good education that will form the launch pad for their growth and development in other areas,” He pledged willingness to partner with the state government in the area of enlarging the foundation to the state level, “while we continue in extending succour to the beneficiaries.” |
