The Lagos State Government said it paid more than
N535m as examination and administration fees for
42,995 pupils writing the 2015 West African Senior
Secondary Certificate Examination in the state.

Four new secondary schools were also constructed in the last one year, while three laboratories were
installed in 32 public secondary schools across the
state.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka
Oladunjoye, said this at the annual ministerial press
briefing in Lagos.

Oladunjoye said the newly established schools
included Sango Junior Secondary School, Agege;
Ajara Comprehensive Senior Secondary School,
Ajara-Topa; Community Senior Secondary School,
Orisumbare, Ayobo, Alimosho; and District Senior
College, Meiran, Alimosho .

According to her, some of the highlights of the
programmes of the government in the education
sector include the introduction of Saturday coaching in core subjects such as Mathematics and English, as well as the procurement and distribution of 524,219 books to public junior and senior secondary schools in the state.

“The state government has upgraded its French
Language Centres to multilingual centres for the
teaching, learning and promotion of foreign
languages other than French.

About 400 teachers were trained in ICT curriculum
just as Mathematics trainings/clinics were held for 14 teachers across the six education districts in the
state on modern and innovative techniques of
teaching mathematics at the National Mathematics
Center, Kwali, Abuja.

“This clinic/training has since been cascaded to other teachers in the state, as another 442 Mathematics teachers were trained in the process. Let me stress that this was part of government’s ongoing efforts to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics in schools with a view to achieving improved performances in internal and external examinations,’’ she said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, said the education sector was the bedrock of human development.
