I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed with the submissions, considering these are supposed to be university students. Besides, I made the previous post when I'd only read Danjuma's entry.

Try writing a very good one pinpointing d criteria needed,coaxing the debater with ur example,stating the maxims,plumbing the 'obvious'. . How do i see myself in the next 10years?,Where will i be in 12years time?,What will i be doing by that time? These are questions that always run through my mind each time i sit to think about myself and my future.


Everybody has a dream and most people have goals. If you want your goals and dream to become a reality,you must move towards them consistently and purposefully. Some people attempt to attract their goals without taking much action while others choose to act their goals but without the added advantage of also drawing those goals to them; doing things that will push them to the path of their goals. Action alone can bring positive results but it is much faster to combine the two techniques.


I am one of those who believe that nothing good in this life comes easy an i am also fortunate to come from a society where the people also believe in the same phenomenon. Someone once said that most of the richest people in the are those who have their private businesses or organisations and not those who rely solely on meagre monthly earnings that can barely satisfy their basic necessities,and that has always been my watch-word in life.
I see myself having my own personal business,being my own boss and not working under any firm or organisation. I want to be an employer of labour, not an employee. I want to create job opportunities for the youth and the unemployed citizens of this great country.


Every child's aim is to be greater that than is predecessors and to surpass the level which his parents were able to reach.I have always had the zeal and urge to be greater than my parents, to be the light in my family, the one who will carry thè family to greater heights and uphold the family's name since i am the first child of my parents.


Whatever dramas are going on in my life,I always find that place inside my head where i see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest and wisest person that i can be. I can taste sweet and blissful emotions on the tip of my tongue, adventures and discoveries around every corner, passion and inspiration within every minute of the day,dreams and future plans that are yet to come my way, and each step counts as i get closer to my dreads and success.


As time goes on, i see many new things within the day and night.
I know i can shine as bright as the stars at night and as bright as the sun in the day,for the cloud will never get in my way.
I cannot help but wonder where life will take me, what life has in store for me, what obstacles i will face in the future, where i will be in 10years time. Whatever it is, i believe that no one or nothing can stop me from becoming what and where I want to be.
No one knows where life will take me to, for life is like the ocean; it can be rough and dangerous or as calm as it can be.

POLITICAL PARTIES SHOULD ENGAGE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE.
"Youths are the future of tomorrow" they say. But this saying had been arbitrarily ruled out by the 'old' leaders of this generation who has blue blood flowing in their veins and this had always been a burning question amidst the scholars and youths of these generation. But before I proceed, it is imperative to give honour to whom honour Is due.

Therefore, Good day the chairperson, chief judge, panel of judges, amiable audience, watchful time-keeper, co-debaters, indomitable Nairalanders and its guests. My name is Sobaloju Israel Dara a student
of the great citadel of knowledge, withheld , am here to speak for the motion which states "political parties should engage more young people".

Before I begin to marshal my point, it is indeed wise to unlock some salient points in the topic. To a layman the context of the topic may be misinterpreted. What is a political party? A political party according to wikipedia.com "is an organization of people which seeks to achieve goals common to its members through acquisition and exercise of political power". Who are the young people? Young people, otherwise known as youths, according to UNESCO, is best understood as "a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood's independence and awareness of our interdependence as members of a community". This statement is a truism, a truism is a statement that is completely true "rep-ipsa-loquitor".

In the first premise, the vast majority of the voters are not young people; it's pretty obvious. Since 1991 no General Election has seen more than 50% of young people turn out to vote. Young people are voting less,are less likely to register to vote and are uncommitted to political parties. This can be traced to the fact that our government which ought to be democratic is now genrontocratic(a government run by old people). People who has run out of ideas or with outdated ideas, through this, I think the youths have used these as a form of protest to show they are not a galah. The gaggle of politicians which political parties plies have gone a long way to detest the rights of the youths by intimidating them, by so doing the youths see themselves as inferior even when they join such parties.

Futhermore, meaningful democracy requires the meaningful participation of youths. Not as political thugs for causing raunches or violence and vandalism. But young people have much to offer societies- from innovation to creativity to new thinking. Their participation in democracy promotes active citizenship, strengthen social responsibility and can enhance democratic processes and institutions. And today's young citizens are tomorrow's leaders and decision-makers. Yet young people's engagement with democracy faces significant challenges, threatening the future of healthy democracies.

Either by putting an age barrier on people who can contest for a post(e.g 45 years for a governorship candidate) or by underating the ideology of young people. Young people aged between 15 and 25 make up one-fifth of the world's population, but have limited influence in national political institutions. Imagine a man of seventy years contesting for a political post, what do he has to offer? I know my opponent may want to opine that 'it deals with experience'. But don't forget an African adage that states "the dogs of this generation knows how to hunt for the rats of this generation".

However, young people are often well-placed to help tackle the challenges they face - including poverty, discrimination, barriers to education and limited employment opportunities by improving means and ideas for themselves but frequently, have limited opportunities to meanifully participate in democratic action. It is not essential for youths to start by rulling

Topic: Is Nigeria's university degrees overhyped?

There is no gain-saying that tertiary education has come to stay in Nigeria. With universities, leading the chart of institutions training students within the tertiary level. Nigerian universities are as old as tertiary education in Nigeria, with the founding of the then "University College Ibadan" as far back as 1948. Afterwards, universities ranging from federal, state, and private have sprang up across the nooks and crannies of the federation.

So many questions arise:

Has our universities performed up to expectation?

Can we truly compare what is obtained in Nigerian universities with what is in existence elsewhere?

Has our universities truly impacted the lives of our teeming youths.

But before I move further, it should be noted that Nigerians are fond of the university educational system, as if there success lies in it. Most Nigerians don’t even appreciate other tertiary educational institutions which includes the polytechnics and colleges of education. This is in fact evident in the yearly applicants to the various institutions in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations U.T.M.E exams. With universities been the most sought after tertiary institutions in Nigeria. So I now ask: Is Universities Degree Overhyped in Nigeria?

Yes, university degree is overhyped in Nigeria, though the truth remains that "University degree is not a license to success anywhere" but many Nigerians think it is so, many Nigerians think that with your degree, you have successfully gotten a "meal-ticket" for yourself in Nigeria. Therefore to prove my points I will make the following submissions:

Inadequate Facilities in our universities: Nigerian universities are just too overhyped; a trip to the universities in Nigeria especially the federal and state owned institution will confirm this. Most universities do not possess the necessary facilities to train the students. The laboratories are empty, the classrooms and lecture theatres are not enough, and the hostel facilities are inadequate. The school environment is nothing to write home about. Though many students still prefer to go there with these inadequacies, but I ask: what is the essence of a university without adequate and efficient facilities?

Poor academic training: many Nigerian universities have not really done justice to the training of its students. It is a fact that though some lecturers are trying their best, but most of them are nowhere to be found. Researching which is supposed to be a priority for universities has now been relegated. Most lecturers do not take their time to really teach the students what they need to know. Some don’t even teach at all, and they just expect the students to just cram what they have learnt to pass the examinations.

In conclusion, the fact that the university system is overhyped in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasised. Many graduates of these our universities can't really compete favourably with their counterparts from other institutions. Most students are just too obsessed with the degree and are lazy intellectually to do things on their own. All hands must be on deck to correct this anomaly.

SCIENCE IS A MENACE TO HUMANITY
Science is defined as the systematic enterprise of gathering knowledge about the universe, organising and condensing that knowledge into testable laws and theories.theses theories are good but the practicals and experiment of these theories are not good at all.

Imagine an individual who is intending to living long in life.But the issue of health has made him to have a short lifespan simply because of the innovation sciences has made.Canned foods, prone people to Cancer, which is a serious ailment in the world today. Also the oil spillage which is going on in this country has contaminated almost all the water in the south of Nigeria.In Nigeria the average water Savage of about 240,000 barrels are been spilled every year.This will be what the masses will be taking into their body system almost everyday.This act is very dangerous to them. according to Winston S. Churchill and I quote "healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have".The reverse is the case when we are not in good health.

Furthermore,it is better for you to be late to an event,than for you to be the late. science has brought about sophisticated cars and guns,that destroy lives and property. The invention of these things, make people to harm innocent lives.This  has made mortality to be to be a normal activity, unlike the ancient days that people use to live long.

Also,because of  science the rate of mortality is increasing day by day.Most teenagers of nowadays ,who know nothing in life are being addicted to watching pornographic film and magazines.This act will eventually make him/her commit rape in a society where he knows he will not be caught.And the victims who are always females might get pregnant in the process, which can make them to commit abortion which is a 50/50 chance for sirvival.What made them to do that is simply because of the enaction of science.This lead me to say that the rapist might forget but the raped will never forget such scenario.

Furthermore, Science brings about increase in the rate of failure in our educational system.Children of this generation are too intoxicated with playing games, watching films,browsing from morning till night.And when it is about time  for their exams they will be looking  for manner that they did not work for.Such student will surely be tempted to engage in exam malpractice and when this happens,The life of such student is dying gradually. when this student fails Waec and Jamb he or she will say that it is the people from his village, that is seeking for his failure.hmmmm I laugh a normal African mentality.

Science makes corruption to be promoted faster and easier.our  "Ogas at the top" will sit in their office and just with a click they have embezzled millions of naira that needs to be invested  for the well being of the masses. According to Friedrich Niet and I quote "whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.And if you gaze long enough into an abyss,the abyss will gaze back into you."They don't know that what they are doing will surely bounce back at them later. When theasses did not have what to eat they will be forced to go out to steal and when this happens they will surely blame our " ogas at the top".hmmm!computer has made corruption easier for the elite to go on with their selfish lives.that is why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

In conclusion, science has lead to the invention of product that limits the life of human beings in the world.Also science has lead to the death of many hidden potentials in this world that ought to have done greater exploit.science has also made our youths to be lazy instead of them to be in busy doing things that will profit them in life.Science has lead to the spread of an unknown spread of sickness to be rampard in the world.what pains me most is that the world cant do without these things anymore, what we need is just for us to be careful in handl

Do we have to experience adversity or serious hardship before we can get the best out of life?

In struggle we found strength says Oprah Winfrey.  Tough challenges reveal our strengths and weakness. Adversity helps us discover who we are, hardships can often lead us to examine who we are and question what is important in life. In fact people who have experienced seriously adverse events frequently report that they were positively changed by their negative experiences.

Whenever we are faced with harder or more complex problem in life, overcoming it will make us wiser. Naturally, human race gets stronger and have survived hardship which stimulates the development the human race is now enjoying.

The past leaders of this country have been found to have gone through adversity before they can accomplish greatness. For example, former president Olusegun Obasanjo once spent time jail.  And also when growing up, he served someone for his father’s debt. In no doubt, these hardships give him the leadership strength he used to rule this country effectively.

A professor in my school graduated with a third class from University of Lagos, but now, he’s arguably one of the best professors of Mathematics in Nigeria. He used to explain how failure transformed him to a brilliant man.

Another example, following Steve Jobs high school graduation in 1972, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Reed was an expensive college which Paul and Clara could ill afford. They were spending much of their life savings on their son's higher education.  Jobs dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on creative classes, including a course on calligraphy. In the commencement address Steve Jobs gave at Stanford, Jobs said that, while he continued to audit classes at Reed, he slept on the floor in friends' dorm rooms, returned Coke bottles for food money, and got weekly free meals at the local Hare Krishna temple. What the hell are you saying? I gave my scores out of 5 marks for each criterion. The instructions said to read all the arguments and provide a score not provide corrections. it's a debate, not an essay. If anything, you're the fault finder here.
