Why Was Ernest Shonekan Afraid To Retire Gen. Sani Abacha? by naijaspeak(op):
Can we go back memory lane a little. Why was Ernest Shonekan, the head of Interim National Government afraid of retiring General Sani Abacha. He left this googled general for close to three month until Abacha became a monster. General Abacha seized power and terminated Shonekan government and installing himself as head of state. Abacha government committed gross human right abuses. The googled General went on to steal billions of Nigeria 's oil money some of which are being recovered from foreign government in Leichestein, Luxembourg, switzerland etc

But why was Shonekan afraid to dismiss General Sani Abacha despite the threat General Abacha pose to his government.

Shonekan was a coward just like Oladipupo Diya, Abdulkareem Adisa, Lateef Jakande, Olu Onagoruwa and other foolish Yorubas in the Shonekan/Abacha government. This is what makes Obasanjo the Owu monster different, Obasanjo can abuse your parents even in your present. Obasanjo wrote a warning letter to Sani Abacha and Abacha framed Obasanjo up for coup plotting. That is better than keeping shut in the face of tyranny and injustice.

I have asked the same question too. Shonekan had the chance to save Nigeria and become the father of Modern Nigerian nation. He could have secretary arrested Abacha and retired him while he was under arrest, and gone ahead, recalled Nwosu to announce the June 12 Election and installed Abiola as the President. If the Northern military and political leaders don't think twice to abuse power and commit all sorts of altrocities while in power, while shouldn't southern leaders deploy political power to effect systematic change.

The answer is cowardice. Shonekan was a coward and traitor. He was more interested in satisfying his selfish ambition than doing public good -even if the public good will benefit in the long run.
