I use to see this animal a lot during my service year in Bayelsa. Its indeed one of their best meat and the area where they stay and live is mainly swampy.

Thats Iguana. Its edible in most parts of Nigeria but not in some parts of Delta state. Its like a diety there.

Omo see speculation! Some say it's a Comodo Dragon, while others say iguana or monitor lizard. Another say its a salamander.

It is neither an Alligator (native only to America and China) nor an Iguana. It is most likely a Monitor Lizard (they sometimes can be caught in swampy parts of Lagos sef, lik Festac in the old days when it wasn't so built up).
