i watched Chappie last night with elevated expectations (me being a sci-fi buff) and i must say the experience was terrible. After the brilliant District 9 i had high hopes for director Neill Blomkamp, i even forgave him for the tepid Elysium, but this...this is a travesty. who ever funded the production of chappie needs to be shot, along with Blomkamp, his wife, sigourney weaver, and hugh jackman.

this film is so bad, so terrible, so useless, so riddled with gaping plotholes they literally appear like sinkholes in every scene.

without much ado, here is everything wrong with Chappie in bulletpoints:

1. Future south africa decides robocops are a good idea, but neglected to have a backup plan in case the machines--being machines--failed. Also the government didnt care much for supervising the main armament and robotics manufacturer.

2. Tetravaal, the company making the robots, looks more like an accounting firm than a robot mass producer. its chief scientists and enginners huddle over desks instead of research labs. Heck, even the singular brains behind the company's only successful product has a small table in the midst of the clerical hoi polloi.

3. Tetravaal is the most bullsh1t company ever when it comes to security. The main Guard Key, the master key to the robots firmware is a mere USB key, which is very much copyable, and is kept in the most unsecure room with nary a guard nor camera, nor alarms, nor any sort of protection. evidently anyone can just walk in and pick it up.

4. the engineers have a great degree of latitude within the compoany. they come and go as they please, access any facility, open any door, enter any level, access every computer and programs, and run whatever code, even malware. all the while there are no guards, no cameras, no alarms, no forms to sign, no permissions to be asked.

5. Tetravaal fully funds the Moose program run by the villain vincent but yet discarded it because it was "big, lumbering, over powered". Er, didnt you see the AutoCad before commission millions, probably billions, to build a fully functional vertsion of the darn thing?

6. Appaerently Tetravaal emnployees, even the ones who work in high security and sensitive projects, are not under protective surveillance.

7. in the wacky and improbable world of Chappie, a computer programmer can create a fully functional "human consciousness" in a matter of hours. And have said program ready for deployment without test running.

8. Deon is apparently the only human being capable of writing complex code completely free of bugs. im a programmer, and even for a few hundreds of lines of code, i spend a great deal of time debugging. i tried creating a first person shooter game with Blender and later Unreal and tons of prefab resources, with only 15 thousand lines of code but the scripting (in python) nearly ruined me after countless cans of Redbull. gave up after 2 years and just one serviceable map barely 500 square meters.

9. so after the bullsh1t "consciousness" update (ChappieConsciousness.dat file, haha) chappie started off as nothing more than a curious child who could only mimic gestures and parrot spoken phrases. a few scenes later he was blabbing nonstop and questioning human propensities with none of the mental progression expected.

10. If the moose robot was controlled via telekinesis using a daft VR-like contraption called a "neural helmet", why was vincent using a HOTAS stick to control the stup1d thing?

11. so all the robocops were wiped out via a malware and the wonky USB guard key thingy, and the police has no contingency plans so criminals are free to roam and cause bloody mayhem. so where was the army? the national guard? anyone? why was there no sense of panic in joburg and even within tetravaal iteself?

12. vincent, in the ofice on a monday morning, physically attacked Deon the star employee of tetravaal and even threatened him with a gun in full glare of every one. and vincent didnt even get a query from HR?

13. Deon finds out that vincent was responsible for bricking the robocops, and instead of reporting to the CEO or whoever, deon fumingly storms to vincent's pathetic workstation, an in front of everyone, deon threatens to spill the beans and expose vincent. he never did.

14. the gangsters of joburg are a joke. so is joburg law enforcement. a couple of villains and chappie robbed a bullion van on TV and no one bothered to trace the villains.

15. why do both deon and vincent have unfettered access to their robotic creations? why should vincent have full access to a militarily formidable and fully armed robot without any checks and balances or oversight?

16. why is a fully functional robot (the one chappie gets transferred into at the end) a prototype?

17. how can chappie, a robot running off a hard disk, transafer his consciousness using a neural helmet? isnt a neural helmet meant for reading human brain scans?

18. if the USB key needs to be physically plugged into the robots to be firmware upgraded (or virus infected), how come vincent only needed to plug it into some random Acer desktop only to upload his malware?

19. as regards 18 above, how were they able to upload Yolandi's consciousness remotely? didnt they need the master key again? and why is the preoduction facility still powered and online since the government banned all further output?

20. so Tetravaal has the most insecure network and computers that can logged into remotely to design, build, and program a robot? if it can be done remotely why does anyone come to work?

21. so how do they plan on getting yolandi out of the tetravaal facility after building her, seeing as robot production was banned?

these are just some of the plotholes, inconsistencies, and poorly realized internal logic of chappie. the acting is even worse, the theme hammy and handfisted, the motivations questionable, the plot tedious, and the endless deus ex machina laughable in its frequency and absurdity.

in a word, chappie is a terrible movie, the year's worst after jupiter ascending.

chappie is for sado-masochists only. please avoid
