Senate Presidency: Consensus Candidate Tears APC Apart by miserflirt: 2:20pm On Jun 04, 2015
There is palpable tension in the All Progressives
Congress (APC), as its National Working Committee
(NWC) looks to have decided on a consensus candidate
for the plum position of the Senate President in the 8th
Senate. The decision by the NWC aims to draw up
criteria that would be used to determine the best
candidate for the position during the inauguration of the
8th Senate has started generating tension. During its
meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari last
Tuesday night, the NWC was said to have listed certain
critical criteria, which the next Senate President must
posses. The meeting, among other agreements, had
agreed that the Party’s candidate for the post must come
from the geopolitical zone with the second highest
number of votes, after the North- West during the
Presidential election held on March 28.
The Party leadership also agreed that the next Senate
President must not have any corruption charges hanging
on his or her neck, and should be one of the most
ranking senators in the current Fourth Republic. A
senator, who attended the meeting, hinted that the
leadership of the Party was mandated to, within three
days, present the most eligible aspirant as consensus
candidate for the post based on the listed criteria during
inauguration next week. The two gladiators currently
contesting the office of the Senate President are: Senator
Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Senator Ahmad Lawan.
Two groups, the ‘Like Minds Senators’ and ‘Senate Unity
Forum’, who were supporting the candidature of Saraki
and Lawan, respectively, had claimed to have secured
the endorsement of enough numbers of senators to win
the race. While the Saraki camp has compiled and come
out with a list containing the names of 34 APC senators-
elect, the Lawan loyalists merely claimed that 40 APC
senators-elect have endorsed the Yobe senator as their
own consensus candidate. The development has crated
serious confusion because there are just 59 APC
senators-elect that are expected to be inaugurated in the
8th Senate, following the death of Senator Ahmed
Zannah last month.
Some elected senators, who bared their minds on the
burning issue yesterday, expressed fears that the
decision of the APC to use criteria that are considered
strange to the rules of the Senate and Constitution could
be counterproductive. The Party is alleged to have plans
to announce its preferred candidate between Lawan and
Saraki during a meeting with the senators-elect today in
Abuja. But those, who reacted to the issue, urged the
leadership of the Party to allow the most popular
aspirant to emerge through a due process that would be
free, fair, credible and generally acceptable to all
concerned. In his reaction, the Coordinator of the Like
Minds Senators-elect, Senator Dino Melaye, cautioned
the NWC against too much interference in the affairs of
the Senate. Melaye maintained that the Senate is guided
by rules.

there a high possibility of pdp clinching d plum senate position again....because even wen d concensus candidate must have been selected(obviously based on sentiments just to please some party leaders like asiwaju)d aggrieved senators elect may end up betraying d party during d senate voting/election day

it is important that a misconception is corrected, the SW had the second highest number of votes after the NW, it is not the NE as erroneously believed and propagated.

You lied Bro. Go check the data again. GMB won by a narrow margin in five s/west states, while he won convincingly by a wide margin in the north east, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi & Gombe.

You call 2.4million plus votes from the SW a 'narrow margin'? Lol. I bet you GEJ would gladly give an arm and a leg for such a 'narrow margin'. cheesy

You need to update your maths, Buhari had 2.5 million votes while Gej had 2 million votes from the SW thus a tiny margin of 500k votes, The votes Kano gave Buhari are nearly four times that margin...The South West was almost evenly split between both parties, so don't rehash history, PDP also had 5 Senators elected from the SW and nearly 15 House Of Rep's members as against nil in 2011

Yoruba want to cycle the Office of the President, in case of any unforeseen eventuality.

They want number two, three and four position all together, just in case.

It was also predicted that PDP would win presidential election with land slide victory. That the election would be followed by wide scale violence.

Did u pass mathematics at o'level at all?. Get a maths teacher to tell you the difference between 'margin' and 'cumulative'
North east came second after d north west in the total number of votes cast & relative proportions of GMB's votes to GEJ's.
The figure you quoted (2.4 million) was total votes cast for GMB; it's different from his margin.
You may furnish us with the total votes cast for both candidates in the two zones, since you are good at keeping data.

what concerns number of votes gotten by PMP with narrow margin ? angry The total number of votes obtained by PMB is what is being considered and it has nothing to do with what GEJ got, only when you consider the votes GEJ got, that you start considering margin.

2015 election by number of votes to pmb ACROSS REGIONS: NW - SW- NE- NC- SS-SE
