I think basement kind of pushed them to the background - and Shaggy, Beenie man, elephant man et al took over.

shaggy's generation westernised dancehall too much. i would rather listen to shabba ranks, mad cobra, buju banton than beenie man/elephant man.

I think the older generation kept it somewhat reggae with dancehall - but once the new generation turned it to bashment, with a lot of gangsta stuff like gangsta rap (though Buju Banton was somewhat gangsta as well), everything changed.

Right now am on Nas's illmatic album listening to "It ain't hard to tell". Now that album is a classic.

lol read a review about it and how the whole album happened, "Nas created a classic album unintentionally by just spitting from the heart", I couldn't agree less. I have compared it side by side with Big's ready to die and still prefer illmatic, even deleted big's RTD from my phone. Except for "gimmie the loot" and "juicy".

i would have to disagree with this.
RTD was everything - it was my favourite album that era. juicy & gimme the loot are 1/10th of the story.

"warning" nko? "the what" featuring method man? then you have....

biggie's story telling was unique. he wasn't a lyricist or a classic poet like nas but he had this street vibe about him that had nuccas on the block feel relevant. he spoke about the struggle of the common man. you need to redownload RTD. you are not a hip-hop fan if you don't have RTD.

i'm listening to "gimme the loot" now with biggie robbing pregnant women off their baby rings & mom pendants.
