This is a science discussion thread. . . You made an assertion, you shouldn't try to shield it from healthy scrutiny and discussion, after all that's all science is all about; when you see a clue you follow it up. .

who knows, You might be the first person to prove that notion cool

Hello guys!

You have probably noticed . . . I don't come online during the day. This is due to my data plan. Which comes active at night. But, I will try to buy a day plan so I can be active here during the day. It is hardly responsible of an OP to go AWOL on his thread. cheesy cheesy

Yes, I have a question. One I have been ruminating on for a long time.

We know that lightning is basically a stream of electrons that shoot up to the sky to complete an electrical circuit during heavy storms. I have a theory that the thunder we hear is actually due to the sonic boom created by the electrons which are moving at supersonic speeds in air. But that is besides,

My question is, why is lightning crooked? huh Why not, like light, move rectilinearly? It is only natural for a stream of subatomic particles to follow a straight line to conserve their energy. I find it highly logical too. But lightning, and any high voltage electron stream for that matter, doesn't.

Now, here is what's funny, electron guns do not behave like this. huh I believe this is because in that situation, electrons act as waves and therefore undergo rectilinear propagation. Whereas, in lightning, they behave as matter. Hence that . . . . does anyone here have a better . . . or different explanation?

Yeah probably need to see it again. . but have heard of plans to colonized Mars. .Mission MarOne. .i follow them on twitter too, they hope to send an unmanned craft to Mars by 2019 and a Manned mission by 2025. . google it up, i think i once opened a thread on that sometime ago here https://www.nairaland.com/2201801/possibilities-mars-colonization we can discuss that too
Right on spot
Hahahahaha grin
Mars colonization?
Okay, let's. smiley
So, first, if we are to live on mars, a luxurious interplanetary transport system will need to be developed.
Meanwhile, there is a plan to build am elevator that goes from sea level to space. HERE is a link I found on that subject.

Also, there will be a need to terraform the host planet. In this case, mars, in my opinion, there are only two options. Either to build self contained pods on the surface on the planet . . . containing atmospheric air . . . or to change the atmosphere of the Entire planet itself! In that case' they will have to dissolve the needed oxygen in a very dense gas in order to prevent the atmosphere from escaping.
Also, people living on mars will be required to wear additional clothing containing heavy objects in order to make their weight equal to that of earth's. Otherwise, their bone tissue will atrophy and can fracture quite easily.

And then there is the obvious problem of getting water to the planet. I find this a formidable problem. For what are we to do? Are we to "fetch water" from earth and "pour" it on mars? grin
I think water has Been found at the poles of the planet, but it is not enough to regulate the planetal temperature. We have will have an excess temperature range of 25 degrees by day and -40 degrees by night shocked shocked

At this point, I would go with the pods. They would have to be fashioned like greenhouses. Containing heat trapping mechanisms. At least until greater technology . . . such as one that can. Defy the very natural process of an entire terrestrial ball. cheesy

Water would have to be constantly recycled. Although, at first, water will have to be harvested from the poles. smiley

And then, in order to produce power, I suggest a fuel cell system. You might gun for nuclear power, but I say, why begin our sojourn on a strange planet by using such a bold and aggressive power source? cheesy there is already enough processes needing maintenance. We do not need to add a nuclear power plant to the already over flowing list! cheesy

Depending on if the planet turns out to have a hot core, geothermal power might also be considered.
I realize that by using a fuel system, am oxygen source will be needed. The result being that
The inhabitants of future mars colonies will have to compete with their own power source for oxygen! cheesy they will find this, I trust, rather interesting,
We can also manage a betavoltaic power source. But the technology has not yet been perfected. Even I am working on a prototype. Expect my research paper by 2017. smiley

I am also currently working on a technology . . . it allows one to breath perpetually in a contained suit. Utilizing only electrical power. Expect the research paper on that by next year.
Back to the planet, I think the pods should be fashioned in such a way that they can be easily expanded with as little as possible reconstruction. But I trust NASA's engineers are not total idiots. They will see to that. smiley
In order to keep the biosphere going, there will be need for food and water. This different from the water being used to bathe . . . or flush . . . it needs to be clean. As source of food, I recommend genetically modified foods. I know the possibility that they might not be healthy, but one can not eat his or her cake and have it. angry you cannot be among the first people to colonize a new planet, and still expect to compete with Methuselah. angry
So, plants that grow exceedingly fast, are disease resistant, and rather nutritious should be developed. I trust genetic engineers will have this taken care of. cool
As source of water, well, since the settlement is most likely to be located around the equator, and water is found at the planet's poles, they will have to devise a means of transporting water through extremely huge distances . . or perhaps, do you have another solution?
After years of playing sim city . . . cheesy . . . I have realized that in order to get humans to do whatever you need, you need to make them happy. There needs to be ways to entertain the humans there. Of course, they will have to go in pairs. Because . . . . konji lipsrsealed I also recommend selecting only geniuses . . . as in individuals with IQs of above 130 these are considerably easier to satisfy. One only needs to provide a means of knowledge acquisition. Besides, they will be far more innovative than average intellects.

I suggest constant surveillance. HD and 3D in fact. That rubbish they did on the moon . . . angry not acceptable!
Watching the people on mars should be like watching a discovery world documentary. Clear, colorful, and acoustically optimal. . . don't you agree? cheesy
Of course, it takes about twenty minutes for the whole signal exchange to be completed. Well, we can deal with that. sad I guess . . .

I heard that NASA is planning to send just two people on the first mission. I strongly advice against this. We are speaking massive homesickness and a sense of being truly alone! I suggest at least four, if the technology we have cannot support it, well, recruit more brilliant engineers. We are plenty in naija. And we are all searching for jobs. angry also, they should recruit more billionaires for funding. Again, they should come to naija, I heard dangote wants to buy arsenal . . . it seems he doesn't know what to do with his fat account. Let's give him something. angry

Concerning waste on the planet. Poop, embarassed urine, used paper, onion skins . . . and so on, I suggest a full recycle operation where EVERY POSSIBLE THING is recycled. Compost, can be made from obvious sources, paper can also be recycled. In fact, if possible, the only thing not to be recycled will be the power. cheesy

In conclusion, I believe we can do this, we just need to take all factors into consideration. Also, more brilliant minds should be brought in. As well as more funding. I would even suggest that every university has a research section devoted to mars. And . . . . in twenty five years, you might just sit down to watch a program titled . . . "updates from the red planet." smiley

Let's make this as interactive as possible, let all of us comment. Not just my Oga here, cheesy
I learnt that some people think we can never colonize the red guy. Where are you people? Come and talk. cool we dey here abeg.
Your two kobo needed. grin

Aha!
I'm addition, I headed over to your thread where I discovered that hydroponics was the selected method for growing plants, well I suggest Aeroponics instead, the later is more accommodating and more stable. Also, it is highly efficient, you might want to conduct your personal research though. smiley this is merely my opinion.

I also noticed that cosmic radiation was an issue . . . hence I ask . . . is there no material in this whole world that can reflect gamma radiation? huh
Sounds highly inconvenient. However, we cannot be stopped by this! cool
Force fields . . . . oh! Of hasn't been invented yet grin
I guess our only alternative is lead shielding. Bummer.

Hmm!
I hope that isn't homework grin grin

Anyway, let's get on with it.

We are given, from your question,
Frequency =256
Length of tube =33.2

We are required to find v , velocity

However, there is a relationship between these values. Given as

f=v/4l. Where f is frequency, l is length, and of course, v is velocity which we are looking for.

At this point, we rearrange the equation to our satisfaction. In this case, we need v solitary on one side. We simply multiply both sides by 4l

Getting v = 4 x l xf

Substituting in given values,

v = 4 x 33.2 x 256

Allowing the calculator to work its magic, grin

v = 33996.8

It is then up to you to convert the above value, which is in cm/s to any unit you want.

I would go with 340m/s though lipsrsealed

Cheers!

Your submission on Mars colonisation is herculean,and would take several years before its workability becomes realistic.Though ideas such as yours can not be jettisoned because the advancement of future technology might handle it.

And as you rightly said,this project will require colossal amount of money--and as well as resources.More brainy scientists and astronauts will be needed...You can as well be part of 'em.

Well, I fear sometimes I get overly ideal.

Frequency =256

What you termed as length of tube should be wavelength.

Velocity is frequency multiply by the wavelength(v = fλ) .

V = 265 x 33.2

V = 8,798 ≈ 880 m/s

If you are right, then it means, my physics teacher was wrong.
It also means that the speed of sound is 88m/s. Wikipedia disagrees with you on this. I think you are switching the formula for c=f/\ , speed of electromagnetc radiation, for v=4fl which is the velocity of sound in an open pipe.
They are quite unique.

That is the velocity of wave. The wave formula.

You are correct, if it is for an open tube with one end closed because it is the air that will be vibrating and there would be an odd integer(for the antinode). The wavelength is 1/4 the length of the tube. It would be F=nV/4L in that case with the way you addressed it before.

P.S. I didn't see what he wrote though. I used what you wrote to solve the problem.

Well, my own anticipation is that the first mars landing will be in 2030. And that by then, it will be easy to return. smiley
It is just fifteen years from now. During that period, let the astrophysicists work.

Besides, I read that HALF of all missions to mars fails embarassed
Knowing this, I cannot help but think of the mars one mission as another dangerously planned fabrication that has a fifty percent of sending humans to the asteroid belt instead of mars. embarassed
Their last moments will be horrible. embarassed

But I agree with you. NASA has the best plan right now. . . that the public knows of. shocked
About the drone, I recommend pakingzzz. I trust you know him?

Cheers! grin

what lie huh
Religion is an explanation. Just like science. It might it necessarily be a lie.
BTW, I have left a question above.
Lie is a false statement made intentionally to deceive people. Religion is not an explanation but a belief in some deity that doesn't exist. And, it is not like science.
