APC – A Polygamous Conglomerate

When the All Progressives Congress was formed in February 2013, some of us were sceptical of the functionality or efficiency of the new political “voltron” coupled together from fragments and pieces of political entities, individuals with different ideologies to “take on the People’s Democratic Party” (verbatim phrase culled from http://apc.com.ng/index.php/about-apc, first paragraph, 1st sentence, 3rd line). The almighty bad guy “PDP” needed to be brought down. Hence the doctrine of necessity was ignited on the premise of “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

Amidst phantasm of hope, key parties including ACN, CPC, ANPP and a faction of APGA (refer to the link above for full meanings of acronyms) merged just to wrestle power from the incumbent ruling party. Fast forward to 27 months after, the sole aim (shamefully) of the merger seems to have been achieved. In similitude to the scenario of an immigrant who gets married to a citizen for the sole purpose of acquiring a nationality Passport, the bait has been sold and the purpose achieved. Hence it is time to break away or exude true colours. According to Bruce Tucker (1965), the stages of Team Development are Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing.

From the assessment of the melodrama at the 8th National Assembly since the controversial albeit infamous (or treacherous, as alleged by APC’s party ranks) inauguration on Tuesday June 9, 2015 coupled with the shocking docility of the newly elected Executive to hit the ground running, it can be concluded that the “storming” stage of this marriage between Nigerians (the Husband Man) and the APC (the Wife) is here.

Unfortunately, while the electorate assumes it is married to one Wife (APC) at the center, the actual truth is Nigerians are married to 3 wives who are respectively clamoring to get a comfortable oceanview lofty bedroom in the Husband’s (Nigerians/Electorate) mansion. No one wants to be relegated. These Wives form the acronym of the party APC, defined as A – ACN, P – PDP (ex-men) and C – (CPC). The rest of the other stakeholders are maids to these key stakeholders.

In deference to Hierarchy, the Wife with the most vantage position is the CPC (“C” team) headed by President Muhammadu Buhari. His agenda as deduced from the character he chose to play during campaigns is that of an aggressive moral umpire to sanitise the polity of corruption and restore the country’s integrity. However, since inauguration on May 29, 2015, he has taken a back seat at the cinemas with a basket full of sugar laced pop corn, 3D googles on, and an array of fanciful cameramen enjoying the largesse of his new lofty pent house suite at the top of the rock. He cares less about the rancour between the other Wives and seems undecided on his future steps, and also not bordered about what the Husband seems to be going through with the incessant fight between the other Wives. He has seduced this Husband (the electorate) for 12 years to no avail and being the most honoured wife, it is time to enjoy all he has missed for these years. It is dream come true and no one will rush him into anything, more so, “he belongs to everybody and belongs to nobody”. Just like Baba Iyabo, he has written his name in the platinum book of history as a former Head of State and a Civilian President. Taking a cue from LG, life is indeed very good.

The second Wife with the next juicy view of the Husband’s gold mine is the Senate President representing the PDP (ex-men) or “P” team. In my opinion, these are the real bad guys (not literarily). Smooth operators who betrayed no emotions during the marriage planning and build up process or election period. They stayed put to the primary course of unseating the previous ruling party which was once their bedrock and place of meal. They seem well experienced and tutored in the art of make believe. I remember that picture of the Senate President (before elections) watching a football match at a local viewing centre and how humble is demeanour was. I revelled in his humility, forgot he ever held an elective post as Governor for 8 years and never imagined he had so much political antics and swiftness in his sleeves to beat the imagination of the “APC Pimps” he ran to when he separated from his previous PDP abode. More shocking is the muscle slinging of his ADC and bodyguard, my very person Dino Melaye who was the main APC crusader and frontline fighter and “Kombat” character to throw a mortal punch at the inglorious PDP regime leading to the party’s death at the center and the success of the new merger team. His sudden preference of the phrase “Like Minds” as against the banner of wives “APC” and flagrant support for defiling the orders of supposed APC love-vendor leaders is notable and worthy of study under the “human behaviour” course. Absolutely classic. Other bigwigs rumoured to be in this league of the last wife/ PDP (ex-men) are Atiku, Tambuwal, Oyinlola etc. The perception is that they are not ready to bow to any kingmaker (chief love-vendor – Tinubu and APC Party Leaders) other than the Husband (the electorate, guided by the constitution).

The last Wife is the Vice President of the Country, a representative of the ACN or “A” team, who seems to have been lost and floating in all of this drama like a lone child experiencing culture shock in a new country of bliss but exposed to the weather and language challenges with no guardian or parents. It is touted that he is the anointed candidate of the Lead Convener (Chief Political love-vendor)/key brain behind the successful takeover of power from the PDP, the sole agenda of the merger of wives to form the APC banner. The expectation was to have this anointed candidate represent the interest of the Jagaban (Tinubu) himself while supporting the first Wife discussed above. Considering that the Chief love-vendor was also the Chief Financier of the marriage build up ceremonies, it was therefore imperative he had an insider to protect his interest and share bedroom secrets. Unfortunately, from the scheme of events, the VP has been relegated to the ground floor of this mansion with only the car park and fence views in sight. The Party Leader, Tinubu (Jagaban/Chief love-vendor), the elected APC Leaders and the ACN faction are obviously feeling very used and humiliated by the teams represented by the first and second Wives mentioned above, less than a month into the marriage. Pimps demand near absolute compliance from their subjects. When they bring together a group of people for the sole purpose of outsourcing them for salacious purposes to customers, they duly expect a share of the bounty and most times swear to an oath to enshrine allegiance. Hence the reaction from the “A” team/Political Pimps is not unusual, even if it is at the detriment of the Husband (Nigerians/Electorate).

The analogies above represent the quagmire Nigerians have found themselves with the supposed “Change Agents” since inaugurated into their respective offices. It has become a discuss of shame the infighting by the National Assembly members for positions. It exposes the different ideologies of the three key teams discussed above with the CPC, chanting moral decency, PDP (ex-men) jostling for control of juicy positions and the ACN fighting for control of all decisions (Note, the APC leadership is touted as being loyal to Tinubu of ACN, the Chairman was his candidate). How a team of supposed moral monks at the Executive will synergise with a team of bad sharp guys (rumoured to know all the hustling make-money shortcuts) at the helms of affairs at the Senate and a Party Leadership led by a juggernaut who seems or alleged to have perfected the art of merging supposed good governance with routes for lining pockets along the way is being keenly watched by all Nigerians. In my opinion, I deduce that we have just experienced the effect of the abhorrence and obliteration of the alleged culture of throwing Ghana-must go bags at NASS members by the Executive for decisions to be taken in concurrence. This moral shock (due to change of attitude or relationship between the Executive and the Legislature) will lead to more spoilers for the ruling party until normalcy returns. To what extent will Buhari or his Pastor support uphold the trust of Nigerians in maintaining integrity and fiscal responsibility by not throwing money to the legislature or the Party Leaders? This is the true test of “Change”. Nigerians are all waiting.

Way Forward:

There must be an end to this debacle and show of might between the APC stakeholders. The polygamous union of strange bed fellows obviously has gone through its first test in its first month of authority. It is time to end this mess in the interest of Nigerians and the electorate to forestall a partial shutdown of governance. My way forward suggestions are as follows:

The Executive should immediately commence work by availing the populace their signed off short term and long term plans. The manifesto during campaign was a draft. It is time to see the agenda or work proposal with measurable timelines for Nigerians to immediately track and monitor. Short term plans should primarily focus on Security, Electricity and Road Infrastructure (SER). Key officers and ministers should immediately be appointed. Need to intervene in the crisis at the Senate in the capacity of the President/Vice President and not as Party members to maintain the religious stance of non interference with the workings of the Senate. The President and his Vice must work in harmony and in mutual trust to duly harness each other’s potentials

The Senate President and Principal Officers should use the period of this recess (no later than 2 weeks as against 4 weeks announced) to covertly appeal to all grieving parties and the Party Leadership. The deed has been done and lessons learnt. Though all actions have been guided by the constitution, it is imperative to erase all allegations of treachery and insubordination.

The Jagaban and the APC Leadership should let sleeping dogs lie. I personally think Tinubu should take a bow from active politics and enjoy the rest of his life. He is the most seasoned politician today with his political sagacity and adroitness leading to the birth of this new team. He should choose the path of an Elder henceforth, providing support to resolving disputes within the party and bringing together warring factions when rancour occurs. He should focus on family, his chain of businesses and philanthropy. The APC leadership should be allowed to run with absolute autonomy taking reasonable decisions when required and not vexatiously.

Finally, it is pertinent for this polygamy to fuse into a monogamy (by exuded collective actions) to duly serve the interest of Nigerians. Most notable Obas or Kings in Nigeria are known to have a harem of wives. But they successfully keep everyone satisfied and happy, even if it is pretentiously. Shikena!

Nice read! So on point! It must also be said that Nigerians are calling on APC to give them democratic dividends. We are not interested in who controls their party machinery.

Not a TANoid issue ooo. I am pro-APC because I believe they should offer more than PDP. However, as an objective observer, it is imperative to highlight anomalies when they occur!
