MizMyColi:I believe it's the administrators who are to kick-off with the reforms and regulations. This shouldn't even pose as a problem, we can decide to model our police system after the Brit's, American's or even the French's. Policing shouldn't be seen just in the cities. We can appoint Sheriffs in our communities, they are to protect the citizens in the rural and incorporated areas. There should also be the transport police who would be concerned with licensing and regulations. Then we can have the State troopers, they'd be the ones to fight major state crimes. We can't dispute that fact that modern technologies do play a significant role in today's policing. We can provide our Police with a record software, the MetroAlert RMS is used by the American police. This software enables law enforcement personnel to spend more time doing the job b'cos they spend less time flipping through the pages of record books and writing reports. Their Report writing would be made easier b'cos the RMS would use the info already in their database to assist them in writing new reports. They would also need two-way radios, patrol cars, shotguns, truncheons, 38 specials, riot gas, mace and electronic tazer guns that can administer a charge of 50,000 volt - this can come in handy when they're after drug dealers, touts and street mobs. They must not always shoot to kill. Policing in Nigeria must change as organizations characterized by inefficiency, corruption, and low personnel standards into transformed professional departments. The professionalization movement should stress changes in the levels of officer education and training, appointment of qualified administrators, and adherence to scientific principles of management. Our Police organizational structuring should be centralized, specialized and bureaucratic. One that must resist political interference. No one would the need the military if the right things were to be done. |

DrSage:I wonder what you guys are scared about. In one breath, you will claim to suppor the building of strong institutions. In another breath, you will prefer everlasting temporary measures. It is the misapplication of resources that has put thousands of our gallant policemen doing mai-guard for politicians and our world-renouned soldiers manning street checkpoints where they are being corrupted. Meanwhile the country remained unsecured from external aggression (eg. Boko Haram). Under GEJ, it got so bad that it seeemed as if we don't soldiers anymore. Let's do the right thing please. |

Touche! These suggestions are cool. They are what Oga BuBu should have focused on before clamping down the Army's internal security provisions. Okay, so now that they have been ordered out, what next? An unprepared police force takes over, right? They're supposed to learn on the job I suppose? ![]() AirborneLacer: |

MizMyColi:I suppose they're gonna learn on the job now, which from every look of it doesn't just seem right. This administration has promised Nigerians change, I guess the decision to remove the army from all check-points is the Presido's advertent way of saying ''Change is here'' ![]() |

Bluetooth2:The point is how many developed countries have police with the mentality of the Nigerian police? Let's not behave as if the police is not commonly known for demanding money from Nigerians and also aiding criminals in Nigeria. There needs to be a different police force with different training, equipment and mentality for this to work. Let us tell ourselves the truth about the current police we have. Nigerian policemen behave as if the Nigerian citizen is an enemy. They don't have the mentality of service or of protection of the populace. |

All this haters here still bereft of the idea of constructive criticism, I know you lots would berated GMB if he had rather disbanded the NPF and insisted that the NA take over the business of internal security... It's shameful to see supposedly educated folks reduced to nuisances all because of hate, should we be paying our police officers and the Army doing their jobs? Think fellas, Think!!! |
