River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, has
stated unequivocally that he did not inherit an empty
treasury from his predecessor, Sen. Liyel Imoke.
Rather he insisted that he inherited a state with great
potentials, promising to turn around the state for the
betterment of the common man.
Speculations have been rife that the present
administration in the state inherited an empty
treasury.
Fielding questions from newsmen in Calabar to mark
his 30 days in office, Ayade said it is absolutely
wrong for anybody to measure the wealth of a nation
by the naira and kobo in its account, but rather by its
economic potentials.
The Governor said, “I inherited a State with great
potentials; I did not inherit an empty treasury. After
all, I don’t measure the wealth of a nation by the naira
and kobo in its account.
“I inherited a state that has a lot of mineral resources
that can be converted into wealth. I met a stated that
people are willing to contribute to, and turn its
misfortune to fortune. And I am prepared to re-jig and
increase the production capacity thereby increasing
the revenue base of the state.
“I inherited a TINAPA Resort and International
Convention Centre that we can, through private
partnership, promote and realise our great tourism
potentials as Africa destination point,” he stated.
Following agitations by local government workers in
the State over delay in the payment of their salaries,
the governor has ordered the payment of their salaries
within the week.
Ayade maintained that for the state to move on and
make its mark among the comity of states, the
construction of a sea port, a super highway from
Calabar to Obudu, and a garment factory are projects
that must be realised within his administration.
On his plans for agriculture, he expressed his
administration’s readiness to establish a food bank
across the state in order to create jobs and add value
to farmers’ products.
“When I served as a senator, I created the Ayade food
bank in my senatorial area. The food bank was an
institution that served as an off-taker, to buy directly
from farmers and distribute to those who no longer
can fish.
“But as a Governor… we are going to have State food
banks in all the local government areas; it’s going to
come by way of an executive policy or a motion
approved by the state house of assembly”, he added.
