Have been hearing about SEO here and there and have tried to read about it online but i still don't get it, can somebody please help me explain it.

Am sure you already know SEO means Search Engine Optimisation.
Alright now what does this means? first let me ask you. have you ever tried to search for something on google? of course yes you said that in your post.

Just like you many other people are searching for one thing or the other on the internet and they do so by using words that are related to what they are looking for. Take for instance you want to host a website and you need a webhosting company to use. You will most likely search for terms like "reliable web hosting company, cheap web host, fast hosting provider, shared website hosting" and so on. so what google does is to now match your search words with websites that has such word in their content and metatags.

Just like you, many more people are searching for web hosting services hence the most commonly used words by the average people searching for such service is called keywords.

Search engine optimisation is now simply you having those keywords in your website content and metatags so that google or whatever search engine can easily see your website and list it when people are searching for something related to your site.

But its not that simple. this is because there are many websites out there with those keywords just like yours and some even pay Search engines huge money so that they can be listed first page of search result so that people can see them before any other.

Also many other things are put into consideration since many websites now fulfill the first requirement of having keywords in their content.
I hope have given you some hints?
