@OP:

The two are not comparable: the one in the other thread is a Barracuda, a salt water fish from the sea; while the one in this thread is freshwater fish in rivers, lakes,etc; known by many names: lates niloticus (scientific) Niger Perch or Nile Perch (local names depending continental location), in Hausa language it is also known as Giwan Ruwa (meaning elephant of the water).
It is the most valuable among our local freshwater fish because of its delicious tasting (almost bone free) flesh.
Your friend is certainly an angler, judging from the picture showing him with a rod and reel which he may have used to land that big fish; though even larger ones, bigger than an adult man (i.e. size of your friend) have been caught by rod and reel as well as other methods - including bare hands (google Argungun fishing festival).
Here are some pictures of others caught.

@ asumo12:
The type of fish you pasted in your post is again a salt water fish caught from the sea, known as Tuna; if by chance you watch DSTV, you will see how they are being caught in a programme in one of the documentary channels titled 'Wicked Tuna' - again your example is not comparable; though Tuna is an oily fish very much prized and favoured by the Japanese who eat it raw in a special dish called Sushi.

Thanx your contribution is most enlightening, but i still find it difficult to comprehend how such big fishes are caught with rod and reel.

Thanx your contribution is most enlightening, but i still find it difficult to comprehend how such big fishes are caught with rod and reel.

Very simple, a skilled angler can still land a fish even if it is bigger and stronger than him.
The technique is not to use brute force otherwise one of the following four possibilities could happen, resulting in failure: the fish fighting so hard till it unbends the hook, freeing it from its mouth and escaping; pulling very strong and breaking the rod; snapping the line; or pulling the angler along with everything into the water and escaping.

Once hooked, the angler must make sure the fish does not free itself from the hook by allowing it slip out its mouth. He does this by ensuring the line remains taut throughout i.e. not slack by maintaining pressure on the line.

If the fish proves too strong and there is risk of any of the above, then he allows it to draw out more line but never allowing it to slacken (for obvious reasons); whenever the fish relaxes and stops taking line, the fisherman should reel it back in i.e. winding more line back into the reel thereby drawing the fish closer to him nearer to the shore.

By balancing this process of letting the fish out and reeling it back in, while always maintaining a taut line; the fish would eventually tire out therefore making it easier to be landed with minimum struggle.

The above is also facilitated by an adjustable gear fitted in the reel which is used to vary the resistance of the line, ranging from quite free to very stiff, that the fish is allowed to take out.

Some monster size fish can take several hours fighting before they can be successfully landed, while many escape due to several factors; ranging from experience of the angler, his tackle, the type of the fish and sheer luck between the hunter and the prey.

I hope this explanation answers your question.

Its a Tilapia and can grow to the size of a moderate dinner plate; it has what is known as prolific fecundity i.e. it can reproduce rapidly, hence it is quite popular with fish farmers.

Took to angling as a hobby, but not any more; though plan to resume when I make myself enough money to retire.
