• Philosophy • Zoology • Sociology • Social Work • Linguistics • International Relations • Combined Social Sciences • Archaeology • Public Administration (which public?) • Banking and Finance • Political Science • Estate Management (which Estate abeg?) • Religion • Insurance • Marketing • Physics and astronomy ( There is nothing astronomical about this course in Nigeria) • Botany • Library Science • Corporative Economics If the federal government are not doing anything by now to scrap this courses from our universities, then it means our economic liberation as a nation is still far-fetched. This courses should be replaced with the courses below. Not as a vocational program now, but as a degree program. Nigerians don’t like to identify with anything vocational, they love to go for ‘NYSC’. • Software Development • Welding and Fabrication • Fashion Designing • Concrete Finishing (Plastering, Screading, Painting, Tiles) • Interior designing and Decoration • Security Systems Technology • Wood Finishing • Road Construction Tech • Leather Extraction and Finishing • Cinematography and Movie making • Advanced Programming • Furniture making • Solar Engineering • Automation Engineering • Hospitality Management • Waste Management and Recycling Tech • Web Development and Management • Graphics, Branding and Industrial Printing • Plant technology and Herbal sciences • Content development and Research If we can embrace this, unemployment will be reduced drastically. The Op has a point and I get what he is driving at.... But bringing this to reality...you need to understand that the courses u listed as useless and should be scrapped are actually what universities re there for in the first place. The second list of courses u put there are very vital also, but they re actually what COLLEGES are established for. And by colleges, I don't mean secondary schools.... Now, what colleges do is that they train you on how best to do things and when, universities teach you the theory behind why things re done that way and how to improve it. What we should push for is a system where everyone is made to do some years in colleges before moving to the uni if still interested. Truth be told...colleges make you an entrepreneur, universities make u a consultant....so in Nigeria today...we have 99% consultants and 1% performers....so who will employ who? Okay OP, I see your point. We are in such a dire situation in this country development-wise that Zoology for instance or Art shouldn't be of major concern to us. Matter of fact, we should tone down on pure science research courses for now (eg. Mathematics) because there's a lot of already researched knowledge in those fields in the world that we haven't even put to use yet. So it should be more of practice-based courses of study for us until we catch up with the world and we know we can. But rather than scrap those courses (they have their uses) we should drastically limit the enrollment into them while raising that of the practice-based courses. A BA Linguistics class shouldn't have more than a dozen students IMHO while we should have a class of 50+ Mechanical engineering students. The problem is, it is more difficult to properly train larger numbers in those practice-based courses because they involve lots of laboratory equipment etc. which is a major area of inadequacy in most of our universities, while there's no such requirements for say, Philosophy as long as there's a big enough comfortable lecture theater with a public address system and maybe a projector they can comfortably handle training over a hundred students in a set. 9 Likes 1 Share |

It is only ignorance that made u consider them as not worthy enough to be an area of dicipline. More also, u can't expect every easy money making career to be a course study in the higher instituition. This shows some attributes of an ignoramus in you. Everybody did not have to go school to study, some have to take the informal form of professions. So, somehow u are also saying vulcanizing should also be a course? Nice! The construction/Technology industry should be given higher priority! Courses like Quantity surveying, Architecture, Facility management, Industrial technology etc and most technical courses should be prioritize.... Scholarships/Bursaries should be used as bait to encouraged prospective students, Undergraduate and graduates alike. 3 Likes |

@OP You made a lot of sense. Most courses on that list don't have are not marketable in the labor market. Kindly include History, Archeology etc. For example even Music graduates can get a placement in the banking industry at the expense of a banking and finance graduate. 1 Like 1 Share |

Op...you are ignorant and naive. while will you advocate for the scrapping of astronomy and physics, or even Zoology, you should have gone on to add mathematics and English, drama and the arts. for your info, while some of these courses are less lucrative and relevant, basic knowledge of them is appreciated. Political science for me should not have a department, but should be thought as a 3 credit unit course as basic knowledge if the political system is important, this also apply to some other courses mentioned. the new courses can still be introduced with a lil adjustment as regards the curriculum. 3 Likes 1 Share |
