Weekend brain drill. The first to get the answer wins a prize:

At a birthday party, everyone shook hands with everybody else. There were 120 handshakes. How many people were at the party?

11 people shake all hands 10 times each giving a total of 110 handshakes.

a lay man solution(wuru wuru to the answer)
1 person=0 handshakes
2 people= 1 handshakes
3 people=3 handshakes
4 people=6 handshakes
5 people=10 handshakes

Note: the number of handshakes per person which is number of people minus one.

E.g for 4 people number of handshake(s) per person is 3. So if i multiply no of people and no of handshake(s) per person. 4*3=12 so you nw divide by 2. 12/2=6
so 4 people = 6 handshakes.
(try other number values like the case of 2 or 3 e.t.c people using the same step)
in the case of 120 handshakes. The question should be what will i divide by 2 that will give 120 the answer is 240.

Find Two numbers if you multiply them its equal to 240, and when you subtract them it gives you one. Those numbers are 16&15.

Therefore number of people= 16
no of handshakes person=15

Typing....

There are 16 people

if its 1 person there will be 0 handshakes
2 - 1 handshake
3 - 3 handshakes
4 - 6 handshakes
5 - 10 handshakes

you'll notice the number of handshakes is increasing by one as the series progresses, follow it up till you have 120 handshakes you will have 16 people.

Ask Google!

0+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13+14+15=120

Therefore the answer is 16 persons
