One thing you don't seem to see is that subsidy itself is a function of the crude price. Whatever you have is at a time t. It can change from time t to time t+1, depending on whether there is increase or decrease in the price of crude. If you remember there was actually a time it was reduced from N97 to N87 because crude price crashed in the international market and we were no longer incurring subsidy at that time. The role APC played in ensuring the reduction and appropriateness or inappropriateness of that reduction in a regulated market is actually an argument for another day.
Back to my argument, if there is direct variation between price of crude and the price of pms, don't you think that should the price hits like $120 per barrel of crude that even this govt can incur over N1tr on subsidy as we will be paying double of what we are paying now as subsidy? The cost of subsidy we have now is just at like crude price averaging $60 or even less per barrel. This will change depending on the dynamics of the crude market. On that note until this govt finds itself in that shoe we really might be unable to judge whether GEJ was totally wrong with that figure around the time when crude was selling at over $100 per barrel.
It is this same issue that makes it difficult to precisely and accurately capture subsidy in the budget as the cost will always fluctuate depending on what happens in the international crude market.
i must say I really apppreciate your maturity in dealing with issues devoid of insults and lies as its generally witness on most of our social media these days. However there is no way a liter of pms will be sold for double the present price if we actually follow the simple law of demand and supply. The business of oil and gas is largely dependent on international politics , which simply means a possible lift of sanctions imposed on iran about 4 years ago will increase the supply of oil in the global market, couple with the general resolve of most world power that are doing everything possible to reduce the use of hydrcarbon derivates as source of power due to global warming. The demand may not witness any appreciable increase, and in the face of excess supply, the prices may not increase. However our grouse against the govt of Dr GEJ was that, @ the time the crude was being sold for over a $100, we expected that part of the money realised would have been used to fix our refineries which have capacity to supply over 60percent of our daily consumption. That would have reduced the level of imports and negate the back interest and forex differentials. The oil swap always would have been a very good strategy of subsidy.

May be you don’t know, I am one of those clamoring for subsidy removal because it has overstayed its welcomes.

If we can stop subsidizing US Dollars, by allowing the market forces to determine the exchange rate which in turn is now increasing our foreign reserve, I see no reason why we should not remove the fraudulent fuel subsidy.

What is the gain of the purported subsidy when Nigerians could still not get the product at the subsidized rate of N87/L?

Okay. Pardon me I didn't read the article. But from the tone of the op and knowing his political leanings, I can rightly guess the figure represents an increase from what it used to be.

A little math here wouldn't hurt I suppose.

If we are spending approximately N1.6b daily, it means we would spend N584billion by the end of the year.

Now, since this represents an upsurge, it means we must have been paying less in the past, yet Jonathan spent over N2.0trillion on the same item in 1year!!

....And they call him a hero. grin

That dude is a freaking Ali Baba!! We know who the other 40 ##ieves are. grin

The OP you replied, tried to explain in two or three comments above, yet some of you pretend not to understand. In 2010/2011 crude oil was almost $100 per barrel and the pump price was N65. Go and recalculate the cost of subsidy on PMS using these variables. angry angry angry angry angry
of course the OP's comment had been responded to. Check out the history of oil prices between 2006 and 2015, you will realise that the best period of wind fall was between 2007 and 2010 when the prices hovered around a 100 and 140dpb, and the government budget for subsidy within this periond in review was not more than #300b for s

Is anyone still contending with the 'free-for-all' recklessness of the past administration?

BTW, N1.7B/day is wrong still (even though GEJ and co were running 4-5 times that on 'paper'); hopefully, with our refineries coming on board, improved power supply, and general accountability, we should be doing less than N600m/day in 3-4 months . . . and next to 'zilch' in a year, or 2. #babadosomethingnow

the prices of crude oill between 2006 and 2012 hovered around 100 to 140dpb and the govt budget for subsidy up untill 2010 did not exceed #300b per year, then what was responsinble for the sharp increase in the subsidy between 2010 2012 to the tune of #1.3trl even in the face of falling oil price.

philips70,

Any feedback ?

Oga philips70,

suffily stuffily abi? how about the daily loss of 1 Billion Naira additional payment by Nigerians to fuel marketers despite the government subsidy?

If Buhari will not remove fuel subsidy at the moment, at least he can enforce the official subsidized pump price of N87/L?

In all honestly I have never disputed that in some areas GEJ govt erred. Just like any human being he made his mistakes and we are all here to live with the consequence quite sadly. My grouse with the opposition however is that they exaggerated many of the flaws totally out of proportion, they refuted every information dished out by the govt of that day and manipulated people's mind to gain political advantage. What was even correct that the govt of that day wanted to give us, they twisted all and instigated people against the govt. Their attitude was that so far it gives them advantage, it is ok. Yes, they rode on that and won the election. However in the process of doing that they passed on the information that will come back to hunt their own govt. This subsidy claim is one of such claims and me and you are witness to how everything is playing out. I will like to bring something to your notice in this regard. In the build up to election, the international crude price dropped and at the time the govt was no longer incurring subsidy. However Nigeria operates a regulated oil economy. The appropriate thing any govt ought to have done at that time is to continue to sell at the prevailing N97 then, and put the excess in saving for days like today and ensure that should the price later increase the N10 margin will be out of question. Unfortunately Gov. Fashola and Oshiomole were at the forefront of the campaign to drop to N87. I really was disturbed then. My question was were these people aware of what they are doing? Do they know it can come back to hunt them should they win election and find themselves at the centre? Of course the rest is history,APC won election and the govt. now has to pay more than N40 instead of N30 in subsidy. N10 looks insignificant but when you multiply it by 40millions, it means a lot in saving for the govt. I didn't consider the action of the govs patriotic enough. The govt ordinarily suppose to be able to revert back to N97 and thus recover some of the money being paid on subsidy but the govt won't be able to do that because they even promise N40/litre without subsidy. It has become a moral quagmire for President Buhari's govt. APC boxed its own President to the corner.
I am ardent listener and I often take my time to listen to people so as to sort truth from lies. As much as Gej govt has its downside, not all about that govt is in the bad. Subsidy is one and we are witnessing even now how this govt has to deal with the monster it represents. There are other instances of vicious and untruthful attack I know but time won't permit me go into for now. I believe if we have been more friendly with that govt, things probably might have turned out better. Maybe if information had been handled honestly APC would have still won election and they probably would have a better foundation to build their govt on. The other day President Buhari came out to say he can't claim credit for the reviving of the refineries but fell short of saying who gets the credit. Nevertheless I praise his sincerity and I can feel what he is presently going through. He is saddle with fulfilling many bogus electoral promises me and you know are just pure concoction of lies. It is not going to be easy for him. I only pray that whenever he is faced with owning up and telling Nigerians truth he will be willing to do so as he has done now on his age and his capacity to fulfil his electoral promises, the subsidy and finally the state of refineries.
Finally I wish the opposition party can learn something and lai muhammed keep shut and allow the President and his media aides do the work of information dissemination.

May God bless our country.

These Things are not elementary arithmetic my friend. You do not have the information at the disposal of the responsible parties so you cannot make any informed conclusion on the matter. Be rest assured PMB is doing everything possible to reduce cost of governance and when it's time for subsidy to go it will surely go.

it seems you are the real thief. Please can you provide evidence GEJ spent 2tr on subsidy (40% of the budget)...the only period they spent above 1trillion was a backlog of almost more than two years which include kerosene (2009-2011). this is what led to GEJ to take off the subsidy in January 2012.

Bros firefire, abeg correct that calculation.. 51 x 920 = NGN 46,920,000,000 = NGN 46.92Billion loss excluding subsidy (you have to either write it like this or you approximate to NGN 47Billion because the NGN 920Million you omitted is almost NGN 1Billion)

Thank you..

My Boss, Nigerians fail to understand certain dynamics in our evolutional journey. We are aware that today, PHRC is now "producing", but alas, we are still experiencing scarcity...take my word for it, we must remove this subsidy to ensure optimum supply of the product. There must be a free market for the construction of more refineries to be a reality.

May God help Nigeria.
