Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator (Akwa Ibom northwest), has been named the minority‎ leader of the senate. Akpabio was nominated by the south-south caucus of the PDP in the senate.

His nomination, however, is against the standing rules of the senate, which exempts first-term senators from holding principal positions. Last Wednesday, Gabriel Kolawole, justice of the federal high court, Abuja rejected an‎ application seeking to stop Bukola Saraki, senate president, from the naming Akpabio as minority leader of the senate.

‎Alaye Pedro and Okechukwu Ibeh, both members of PDP, had filed an ex parte application challenging the party’s choice of Akpabio as senate minority leader. They contended that the ‎possible emergence of Akpabio as senate minority leader would breach the senate standing orders exempting first-term senators from holding such a position.

But the court struck out their application, paving way for Akpabio’s nomination on Monday. The PDP, which lost the majority seat in the senate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the March general election,‎ had zoned the position of senate minority leader to the south-south.

Challenging the nomination of Akpabio, Kabiru Marafa (APC Zamfara central)‎, argued that it did not follow rules of the senate‎, and was therefore null and void. But Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president,‎ wondered why Marafa, who is a member of the APC, had made it his business to oppose the decision of the PDP – a party in which he has no stake.

Ekweremadu‎ further explained that although the senate rules give consideration to ranking senators for principal positions, the constitution of Nigeria, a superior document, does not exempt anyone from holding positions of leadership. ‎

He added that the decision of the PDP to make Akpabio its leader in the senate was strictly the business of the party. The senate president subsequently ruled Marafa out of order after, saying he was “crying more than the bereaved”.

Earlier, Marafa had also raised a point of order, saying that the activities of the senate since June 9, besides the‎ inauguration of the presiding officers, were null and void because they did not follow the rules of the senate. ‎He was also ruled out of order.

‎Other minority principal officers are Emmanuel Bawcha, deputy minority leader; Philip Aduda; minority chief whip and Abiodun Olujimi, deputy minority chief whip.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to you, the Unccommon Transformation Icon.

Everyone who says His Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Chief) Godswill Akpabio lacks the capacity to lead a vibrant opposition at the red chamber if our NA does not seem to know him.

Akpabio is a tenacious and dogged fighter.

He is sagacious, quintessential and very intelligent. Those close to him usually wonder how he was created with a memory that can store vast information so retentively.

If you doubt me, ask the people of Akwa Ibom State. He just has the grace of having the wherewithal to succeed at anything he set his mind on.

Akpabio's over ambition is capable of ruining south east south south alliance. What happens to the ranking rules of the senate? Next time, he wants to be senate President. Rocha's and Akpabio are problem politicians who always want to have their way.

Sen. Goodswill Akpabio remains the most fearless, articulate and diplomatic PDP politician in the 8th Republic.

The combo of Saraki, Ekweremadu and Akpabio will prevent rubber-stamping of Core Northern agenda from the presidency.

He maybe articulate and diplomatic but he's not fearless, and there goes my worry. Playing "Mr Nice Guy" wouldn't achieve much in the murky waters of our volatile senate.

Tell me who is the most fearless among the PDP Senators.

Diplomacy doesn't equate to Mr Nice guy rather it is called the Tortoise Formula (the same thing Southwesterns call Sophistication in Nigeria's Politics).
