Nigeria's Refineries Should've Been Sold To Dangote - Obasanjo by kazmanbanjoko(op): 9:31pm On Jul 29, 2015
According to ex president Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's refineries would've been sold to business mogul Aliko Dangote long ago.
Speaking on a Channels program, Obasanjo gave an insight into how his successor, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, said he was pressurized into reversing the sale of the nation’s oil refineries which he had concluded before leaving office in 2007.
“The refineries are old and Dangote and some investors paid $750m for two of the refineries. My successor came to office and reversed the sale; he even refunded the money they paid.
“So, I went to him and said ‘why did you do this’? He said it was because of pressure. So, I said ‘so the pressure of some people was more important than the interest of the whole nation’!
“Right now, you will hardly be able to sell the refineries for more than $250m because they are very old”.

Obj clearly has lost touch with reality. the old man should be remanded in a mental institution and given a toy microphone to play with. that way, he will think he is still relevant and may be contest for the presidency of Senile Peeps of Nigeria (SPN)

Dangote, as is right now, is already too powerful, as far as i'm concerned. I think it would be a big mistake to allow him to have monopoly over our main source of economy.

Typical Bloody elitist capitalist...... so his brain sees no other solution to the problem other than selling to an already too powerful man.

It is not in my character to abuse elders otherwise.....

You privatized a whole lot of things which you bought at the same time with looted funds and you still have the audacity to come and spill trash here.

We never knew about this transaction before now, which implies he diverted the money to his personal pocket.

Late yar'dua must have refunded the money from National treasury.

GEJ was mainly accused of supervising corruption but you perpetrated corruption your self. And is annoying to know you do not show remorse for your inappropriate action while in office. I do not know what you feel like?

PMP is finding difficult to form his government due to inordinate political culture you handed down to your successors. Political offices are no longer call to service but call to loot and impoverish the poor and downtrodden. He feels like doing everything himself because there is no one to trust.

What is the greatest achievement of your father and grandfather respectively? I am sure they are nobody; not even a landlord association member.
It is a shame the way you people insult people who are old enough to be your grandparent, particularly people you would not be able to stand before in your entire miserable life time.
I am sure your parents didn't raise you like this.

Very silly thought. We need to break dangote's monopoly on Nigeria before he starts to appoint presidents and sell out common wealth. Let him bid like others and win some bids but not all. we need to pass anti competition laws too to prevent such monopoly's. Let 6 solid companies from the different regions have the opportunity to refine the oil in all the regions. Let us also pass laws to prevent price fixing both at the refinery and at the pumps

OBJ, always like selling things sell-able! Had it been that Nigeria as a country sell-able Baba would have invited the westerners to bid for it. Shameless agbalagba

As far Nigeria is concern, Dangote is just a name or body in which top Nigeria politicians hide their loots under but one day, breeze go blow and fowl anus go open.

The comments I read on Nairaland these days are worrisome. No intellectual arguments but barrage of insults.

For everyone who read the short article, you will notice the topic is misleading. The intent was not to sell all Nigerian refineries to Dangote, but 2 out of the existing moribund 4 to "Dangote and other investors" during the latter days of Obj as President. The article did not elucidate on the bid process, but it will be wrong for anyone to assume there was no bid and the decision was selective.

The telecoms sector privatization was a success. If the power sector reforms had been duly executed using a Value Chain and Project Management approach taking into consideration, generation, transmission and distribution holistically and as a system, it would have also been a success.

If the sale had not been reversed, the FG's contributions to subsidy would have been way lower than what itvis today with price also staying within range!
