so yesterday i learnt that the correct response to "how do you do?" is "how do you do".
it made no sense to me because i thought the logical response would be "fine" or "good" or stuffs like that,that is why i have brought this to NL to clarify. So professors in the house,let us know which is the correct response to "How Do You Do?".

But, I have always done it my way except in formal settings. I always go "good" when I get the question.

Those days when men were boys we used to use it to know those who went to good and proper schools.

When we meet someone we will greet hello friend, how do you do?

Why are you ranting, professor know it all

I have heard it and have also responded with "how do you do". This seems to be a greeting that has largely fallen out of fashion and I've never heard of the explanation for replying with "how do you do" (it just happens and if you've heard it while growing up it just comes out in response automatically). This is an interesting question to pose though.
Nowadays, I usually answer that greeting with, "Well, thank you. How do you do?" because I don't want the other person feeling like I just totally disregarded their question to me.
