Nigeria undoubtedly is a great nation. Her endowment in material resources is among the greatest in Africa nay the world.

Most Nigerians are wont to deem themselves smart and intelligent. The attitude of Nigerians in the company of nationals from other nations lends credence to this.

However, a cursory look at the conduct, idiosyncrasies and mannerisms of the generality of Nigerians puts the above supposition into serious question.

Take for instance the followership in Nigeria. The default word out there is that the woes of the country are amenable to the political leadership. Well, nothing can't be more simplistic.

What happened to the aphorism that a people get the kind of leadership/government they deserve? To what extend has the followership demonstrated a predilection to learn from history?

Too little.

Some of us still remember vividly the Babangida and Abacha days. While each man was helping himself to a huge chunk of the national wealth, Nigerians were busy singing their praises to high heavens. At the end of the day, we began to shut the barn door after the horse had bolted.

Enter the wily Owu chief. Nigerians saw in Obasanjo an amalgam of Aladdin and Ali Baba in received wisdom. And boy were we enthralled?! We stood mouth agape with consternation and wonderment as the big masquerade strutted his stuff across the stage. We were held spellbound to mystique of the juggernaut. When we woke up from our reverie, we were faced with the rubbles of Odi and Zaki Biam. We also discovered to our chagrin that tens of billions of dollars supposedly voted into changing the fortunes of our seemingly intractable power challenges had defied accountability.

How our about "Goodluck"? He came with the unbeatable resume: a PHD, deputy this, acting that, then president. To put an icing on the cake, he was born with no shoes. We were flabbergasted. We sang his eulogies. He was our "Goodluck" and as such beyond reproach.
Then the standards started nosediving. Corruption and executive recklessness became normative. The ship of state started running on auto-pilot.

Now we have Buhari. Our man of impeccability. We even dub him infallible. We are throwing ourselves at him, body, soul and spirit. We have concluded that he is not a mortal and as such does not have the foibles of a mere a man. Our quintessential Buhari has such a stardust that we have concluded to acquiesced that our national life should stagnate provided that it satisfies the whims and caprices of our messianic superman. And we are keen to do more.

Still smart?

Nigerians are very cunning and deficient in value appreciation. We are all clowns because we love excitements. We regard serious minds as wolves and corrupt. Miracle s are somehow strange to us , and so we like magical character s.

Our lazy sociologists, academics and the so-called intelligentsia wouldn't put the requisite resources needed to unearth the outlandish behaviours that predispose us as a people to the manipulations of an unscrupulous political class.

Something has to be wrong.

Nigerians are not.
We can't even produce half of our modern basic needs.

Some illiterate will celebrate deceits and cheat as intelligence and smartness.

For once in the history of Nigeria, we have a president who wants to set things right, he needs our support! We have always cried to heavens to let our political elites face hell for the trouble they caused this country, their greed that bankrupted this nation. Buhari wants to try and we won't even give him a chance. Articles Upon articles are being sponsored on why we should take it slow and I wonder, "are these the same people who have been in the wilderness?"

My friend, unreasonable praising of Buhari does not make one a better Nigerian.

You probably did not get the slant of the piece above. Governments all over the world get more responsive when they are monitored by a virile and constructive opposition.

Anything short of the above would be tantamount to sowing the seeds of authoritarianism and dictatorship.

Per the bolded, Nigeria is not a great nation, not even a starter. As for being smart, it depends on the essence of human endeavor. In terms of sustained economic productivity, Nigerians are not smart.

Has that happened in Nigeria? Or did you just write this for the sake of putting pressure on a 3 month old government struggling with buoyancy to perform miracles?

Something is one. Many things are wrong here. See the many universities authorized and approved by GEJ, could you believe, not one of them has been properly accredited and yet the commission is just creating catastrophe on the admissions of our children who took Jamb since last year.

You are not getting it, are you.

If you sow the wind, you will reap the whirlwind.

Just as was implied in the article, the time to guide against executive excesses is now. You don't begin to complain when you have unwittingly encouraged unaccountability in government by pandering to the whims of the leadership.

We must put our leaders under constant scrutiny to ensure that they do not get carry away believing that their views are inviolable.

Yes it has. APC gave the past govt the most virile opposition ever, albeit one laced with lots of lies, deceit and hypocrisy. It paid off in terms of making GEJ do more towards the dying days of his regime and in getting a new govt in place. And now that new culture must be sustained to keep the new govt working or butt them out in due time if they toe the usual Nigerian path.

Exactly the way we should be thinking.

BTW why do topics like this hardly make front page?
