How difficultly is it for Biafrans to understand that a general that couldn't supply food ration to his army during a war is completely clueless. This is what you are thought as a recruit yet the most sophisticated Igbo leader couldn't understand it. Just as cluesless as Jonathan Ebele who had to wait for Buhari to come clean up Ogoni. Keep blaming others for your failure while praising failures as leaders |

ayokellany:Did you remember the Yoruba braggart, Benjamin Adekunle a.k.a the Black Scorpion? During the 1967-70 civil war, Adekunle mocked the pope, Red Cross, Caritas, world council of churches, UN etc, and boasted of his killing spree on the Igbos. And how did his life end on earth? He died a miserable contractor, he was literary begging for contracts just to feed. This is a man that ranked higher than IBB, Danjuma, Obasanjo in his hay days in the military. The Hausa-Fulanis used him to prosecute the unholy war on Igbos, and they dumped him after mission accomplished. The bloody general was stripped off his military title; he was discharged dishonourably without his benefits, till he died he never received a single pension from the Nigerian State. The Scorpion ate his own excrement, begging Igbos to pay his medical bill to ease his pains until he chose death in 2014. What a miserable life! But before his death Adekunle apologised to the Biafrans for his atrocities. On the other hand the hero, Odumegwu Ojukwu, lived his life in opulence and venerability. Ojukwu was respected and paid his pension by the Nigerian state. A new generation of Ojukwu is now poised to kick your behind relentlessly and utterly. If you doubt it enter the streets of Lagos and test your capabilities putting you online reckless rantings to test and see if your entire generation will not go for it. This is no threat but a promise... I repeat, if you doubt it and you're worth your useless rantings while hiding behind the keyboard, venture into the streets of Lagos and prove yourselves. Just this once... |

chuna1985:Read 'The Brothers War''....by John de St Jorre. Marc Goosens name is prominent among the Biafran mercs mentioned there. And yes....Nigeria too had mercs. |

menix:The guys pictured are your mercenaries. I recognised some names there. I suggest you read a good book about the civil war...like ''The Borthers War''. The author is neutral...and might have been a bit sympathetic to the Biafran cause. He devotes segments of the book to Biafran mercenaries. And there is nothing wrong with hiring mercs....at least one of the mercs Biafra hired was ex-French Foreign Legion (That's the kind of guy you want at your back in a battle.). And yes...Nigeria hired mercs too. Many foreign armies have 'foreign fighters''. Some even make them into foreign legions. (The French are a good example). |

Berem should have been sacrificed to the gods at birth, though I doubt if the gods would have accepted her. You have no respect for your people's history, you side with outsiders to talk poo about your people. You think those outsiders will ever trust you? |

personally i feel ojukwu should have killed himself after the war instead of running away. Guess what, Shagari invited him back to Nigeria, restored all his properties and he lived well till he died BUT millions of igbos lost their lives. The ones that survived were reduced to 20 pounds regardless of how many billions or millions or thousands they had in their accounts. Their lands and properties were seized. Ojukwu had it fairly easy and i don't think he is a hero on any account. A hero rescues his people but ojukwu made the igbos worse-off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The above post was my perspective in 2015. It is amazing how learning changes perspective. Unfortunately, I was insulted rather than educated by those that probably knew better. In retrospect, the Igbos faced a genocide and it wasn't necessarily a war. Ojukwu's hands were tied and even all attempts to avoid the war (e.g., aburi accord) were scuttled by the Nigerian government. Nigeria owes the igbos a profound apology and Ojukwu and the biafrans are the heroes. One angle that has not changed is that I believe he should have killed himself. Not because he was wrong but because he failed to protect his people from a genocide as the paramount military officer of the eastern region. He did his best but it wasn;t enough. |

magicminister:Cry me a river! Another round of propaganda from unrepentant bigots of wicked generation, trying in futility to deflect the notorious acts committed by their greedy and despicable forebears. Evil men and their praise-singers who are responsible for the ruin and bastardizaton of this country with great wickedness and treasury lootings, would still come online wearing a toga of objectivity. When in reality they are wolves in sheep clothing. We know your type - you are neither truthful nor honest. But charlatans who have helped to ruin this country and have brought her to the present miserable state! Aren't you ashamed that it took over 200 ethnic nationalities in Nigeria and the Western powers to stop a 30 year old brave man? But it took just Abacha to kill and silence the most successful man from the suffersticated and diabolic Yoruba tribe - the Field Marshall of Odua Kingdom, MKO Abiola. And nothing happened despite all the bragging and noise-making in the media. Fact! A coward is not the man who stands up for his people and took precautions to preserve his life like Washington, Gaulle and Ojukwu but the Yoruba General Oladipo Diya who wept like a kid before a junior officer because he was afraid of his life...after wilfully and knowingly plotting a coup... Ojukwu defended his people from ethnic cleansing. lived fighting for the liberation his people. And today he remains a hero! I challenge you, do you have someone in your ethnic nationality you can call a hero ![]() |

magicminister:Cry me a lagoon! Ojukwu remains a hero! If you don't like it, you can consider hanging! I challenge you again to name one hero or brave man from your ethnic nationality! Since the January 1966 coup there have been many other subsequent coup d'etat in Nigeria. Now, objectively and honestly answer this question: Why did you and your cohorts not execute pogrom on the ethnic group of the coup ring leaders ![]() You can use the coups of Dimka, IBB and Gideon Orka to buttress you point. Mischievous, unrepentant bigots, I know your fears that the great evils you committed against Igbos may catch up with you sooner than you ever expected. BLOOD ON THE NIGER: THE FIRST BLACK ON BLACK OCTOBER 1967 GENOCIDE OF ASABA PEOPLE BY MURTALA, GOWON AND AWOLOWO ...Like my father and elder brother that were part of the over 1000 youths that were killed on October 7, 1967, in Asaba, most of them were members of the Action Group (AG). The people that believed in the NCNC at that time left for the east. My father who worked in Enugu, Nsukka, Uzuakoli and Kafanchan as a civil servant could have gone to the east. But he believed in that war. He was an apostle of the Awo ideas-free education and free medical services. In fact, the Asaba General Hospital that is now a Specialist Hospital was brought to us by the AG led by Nduka Eze, another AG hardliner who left the Zikist Movement to join Awolowo. But Nduka Eze's wife was killed by the federal troop under the command of Murtala Mohammed because she refused to be touched because they were defiling women at random when they came in. The genocide against the Igbos has been proved beyond reasonable doubt by the apology made to Asaba people by General Gowon when he came there after the release of the Blood On The Niger. The genocide against the Igbos was proved beyond reasonable doubt at the Oputa panel which the federal government has up till now refused to publish the findings. Bishop Desmond Tutu chaired the Truth and Justice tribunal in South Africa to find out what happened in South Africa during the apartheid period. It was accepted by both sides and just look at the peace that has prevailed there since then. Why would Nigeria not publish the findings of the Oputa Panel where it has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that pilots were throwing bombs at random into market places in Uzuakoli, Uzuitem and Nsukka, where bottles and implements were also used against women during the war. History is an account of the actions of actors in a community or in a state recorded that made impacts during their time. Awolowo was a great leader; great politician and great performer in government but his activities during the civil war were negative. If you are a writer, you cannot defend his position that starvation is an instrument of warfare. Starvation cannot be an instrument of warfare when you are fighting a civil war. Nigeria was being supplied arms from all countries. For the first time there was an unholy alliance between the Soviet Union and the West. It had never happened before. Any place that there was a war of revolution, the USSR is always taking the place of the revolutionary. How come that the USSR for the first time allied with the West against Biafra? So, let somebody go and disprove Achebe; that is what we want to see not that somebody did not commit genocide. Genocide has been proved to be committed. If there were no genocide, the World Council of Churches, the Caritas wouldn't have come in droves. If genocide was not committed, why did Biafra lose two million casualties, most of them civilians and children? And if people are not apologising to Igbos, why should they now come out to talk because one man has been put to where he belongs in history. He was the principal protagonist of using starvation as an instrument of warfare against his fellow citizens. Remember that Nigeria was fighting a war of unity. They were not as desperate as the other camp that was fighting a war of secession. So, in international convention Geneva included, you don't use starvation against civilians, you don't use firearms against civilians and you don't use bombs. Are they saying they didn't bomb civilians during the war? The Nigerian Air Force was very pronounced in its use of bombs on civilians and their targets were churches, market places and hospitals. These were recorded by missionaries and foreign journalists. Awolowo was the Minister of Finance under Gowon. He was the de facto prime minister of Nigeria during the war and he performed. I don't grudge him for winning the war for Nigeria; for changing the currency. He can win the war by all means but the fact that he prevented massive aid from coming is genocidal. There was an inhuman instance. There was an incident where a Red Cross plane coming with medication and food was blown off the sky for the beleaguered people of Biafra. Even after the war, what was the purpose of denying Igbos their primary source of protein-stockfish? How can you defend the policy of giving people who have lost everything only 20 Pounds? If there is anybody that should have been given more, the returning war battered people of Biafra should have received more. The Igbos have always accepted Awolowo as a great leader but his activities during the civil war shocked them. BY THE OBJECTIVE OF THE JANUARY 15 COUP, as quoted by Odia Ofeimun, the poet, the boys believed he was the greatest leader. THE LEADERS OF THE COUP, WERE TO MAKE CHIEF AWOLOWO THE PRIME MINISTER OF NIGERIA. These coup leaders didn't go for Azikiwe or Balewa. They wanted Chief Awolowo as quoted by Odia in a 1999 edition of The Guardian. Awolowo was supposed to be released by the Nzeogwu coup, which didn't have its assumed ending; it was aborted half way. It was Nzeogwu's colleague, Major Nzegwu that was supposed to pick him from Calabar prison and release him. So, I'm proving to you that the Igbo literality have always accepted Awo as one of the best and great leaders the country has ever produced but his activities during the war did not only shock them but betrayed the trust they had in. During the whole peace conferences from Niamey to Kinshasha, Awolowo, Enahoro and Alison Ayida, who was a permanent secretary, always took a hawkish stand. That was why in the Niamey conference of 1968 Alison Ayida quoted Awo exactly that starvation is an instrument of warfare. This was at a time when millions of Biafran children were dying off. And death by starvation is not an ordinary death. It is for you to experience it. It was horror and the photographs are there but Awolowo and his henchmen never batted an eyelid even after the war. That is why we glorify other great literality like Wole Soyinka who told us in his book A Man Died that extermination was committed in Asaba. He was the first courageous soul in Nigeria that told the world about the Asaba massacre. http://nigeriavillagesquare.com/forum/main-square/73341-most-those-murdered-asaba-muritala-gowon-awo-were-action-group-members-emma-okocha-author-blood-niger.html |

UrennaNkoli:I am sorry ,I disagree with you on this. This is a man that started a war with only 17 rifles, he sustained the war for 30 months with no major support from any world super powers or world power, he wiped out 3 divisions of the nigerian army, his army killed more than 500,000 nigerian soldiers backed by Britain,Egypt, Sudan and Soviet union. His army inflicted major injuries on most former nigerian heads of states like babangida who is presently suffering as a result of the injuries biafrans inflicted on him, Obasanjo whose 4 body guards were killed by biafran snipers and only managed to escape by the whiskers with scars he will carry to his grave and murtala who was sent on forced exile to London till the end of the civil war when his 100 column of vehicles and military trucks carrying a whole division of the nigerian army was wiped out of existence with a single ogbunigwe bomb. How about Benjamin Adekunle aka black scorpion that started operation OAU with about 35,000 soldiers almost the whole of the third marine commando to capture Owerri Aba and Umuahia but were decimated and extinguished to a mere 300 soldiers who barely escaped back to port harcourt which led to adekunle's replacement and fall from grace. I think more than anything else Nigerians should be eternally grateful to niger deltans for providing the back room support and to Britain for their total commitment despite the inept nigerian army and to Ojukwu for not towing the option of guerilla warfare which would have worsened things for nigeria. |
| Re: Photos Of The Mercenaries Ojukwu Hired During The Nigerian Civil War by kettykings: 8:24am On Aug 29, 2015 |
magicminister:I think Nigerians miX up things here, the 2 million people died of starvation and sabotage of farmlands by Nigerian army who couldn't stop the biafrans. If biafrans had towed the option of guerilla warfare which would be boosted by the use of precision targets of Nigerian army the war would have continued till today. Ojukwu was never captured however for generals who couldn't even defend their ranks like obasanjo, Diya, Adisa Olanrewaju these should have committed suicide for cowardice for not living up to what is expected of generals .Ogundipe was first to exhibit cowardice by not taking over power when there was power vacuum. Ironsi took over power when there was a vacuum of power. |

magicminister: I want to start by saying that hiring mercenaries in times of war is normal. There are foreign soldiers who are trained in special combat situations such as jungle warfare, amphibious fighting and gurreilla tactics which the local army may not have knowledge of. Ojukwu and Gowon both hired mercenaries. A lot of ignorant people blame Ojukwu for the war as if he started it. Some even say he should have stayed back to be slaughtered and that he was a coward for fleeing. It's just unfortunate that the present generation do not know the history of Nigeria or the war. The first coup in Nigeria was called an 'Igbo coup' but it was not. People like Ojukwu and Ironsi were the ones who fought to put that coup down. Six months later, the northerners did their own coup and killed over 300 eastern Soldiers. As if that was not enough, they now went on to kill over 50,000 eastern civilians, men, women, children, babies. Children drowned in wells, pregnant women's bellies ripped open, men beheaded, young girls raped. It is easy for people to chant "one Nigeria" if these things are happening to other people and not them. When all of this happend, Ojukwu had a moral obligation to protect his people from death. Northerners conducted a bloody coup under Murtala, did anyone kill 50,000 of their people? No. Middle belters conducted a bloody coup under Dimka, did anyone kill 50,000 of their people? No. The SS did a bloody coup under major Orkah, did anyone kill 50,000 SS people? No. But when it comes to Igbos, that's when every body feels like going on a killing spree. Ojukwu was justified in fighting to protect his people. It was the Government of Nigeria that killed those two million people all because they wanted oil. That's the real reason the war was fought, it had nothing to do with keeping Nigeria one as it had with not allowing Ojukwu go with the oil. Finally, on matter of Ojukwu fleeing. I often ask people, what would have been the point of Ojukwu killing himself or staying back to be killed over a war he had already lost? What would this have achieved? Nobody has been able to answer me to this day. All that would have happened would have been that Ojukwus body would have been paraded publicly and made a jest of and the same people who now call Ojukwu a coward for fleeing at the end of the war would have been calling him a fool for staying back to be killed like a Chicken. We Igbos love Ojukwu for fighting for our liberation and freedom. He was the only one till date who fearlessly stood to Northern domination when all others succumbed. He was a great man who stood by his people in difficult times. He was the greatest Igbo man I will ever seee in my life time |
