Not surprised at all. With the rate of violent clashes between benue communities and fulani herdsmen that has been reported to have claimed over 1k lives since 2013, every sane person will expect them to have ammunitions they use to protect themselves. I just hope they won't be caught off guard after surrendering those weapons.

A renowned gang leader in Benue State, Terwase Akwaza, aka Ghana, has surrendered 84 guns to the state government.

Governor Samuel Ortom, after the State Executive Council meeting, said Ghana embraced the amnesty programme declared by his administration for residents of the state to surrender illegal weapons in their possession.

Ortom who announced that the amnesty had been extended to the end of September.

The governor stated that the extension of the amnesty window became necessary following a plea by the gang leader that he needed time to persuade some of his friends in the underworld to also surrender their weapons.

Ghana was quoted as saying he became a militant leader to secure his community, adding that he had decided to genuinely embrace the calls by Ortom for people in the state, holding illegal weapons, to surrender them and embrace peace.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Col. Edwin Jando (retd.), disclosed that he received “135 assorted rifles and 770 rounds of ammunition from those who voluntarily surrendered their weapons, with 84 rifles submitted by Akwaza”.

The governor expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku; the Catholic Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Bishop Peter Adoboh, and others for their support for the amnesty programme.

Funny how Amnesty is now the solution for Government's inability to provide security..

The people who they hired as thugs to win elections now legitimately benefit from Amnesty..

When will graduates submit their glorified certificates and received Amnesty also? undecided

If you look at the comments above, you don't need a soothsayer to tell you why Nigeria isn't working. The leaders have realized that Nigerians are very emotional beings and lose their sense of reasoning on the alter of sentiments and ethnic bigotry..

It only in Nigeria that the term Amnesty can be abused and it's a shame...

I hear they want to give BH Amnesty also.. After killing thousands of people, leaving many windows and orphans.. The so called body language government believes Amnesty is the cure..

Other people will carry arms, wreak havoc on unarmed Nigerians and wait for government to offer Amnesty also.. This is the nasty trend we are setting and posterity may not be forgiving as I am.

Dry weed is not good for you, what a pained imbeci.le,where in the news do you read that the guy was a hired thug, and where do read the number of people he killed, you can equally carry arms and received amnesty, you can even surrender ur xpired brain for amnesty.
we are talking about a militant and the guns,u are here hating.

This is exactly my thoughts. These guys must have done this to respond to the incessant attacks from Ful*** herdsmen since the government security apparatus could not protect them. My question is ''Are the FULANI KILLERS also surrendering their own weapons? otherwise this would end up being a foolish move.

I have learnt that when a peaceful solution is impossible, then a violent response becomes inevitable. Violence when met with more violence is bound to yield to fear and then respect and then peace, even if it is volatile peace. Go and ask the Israelis how they are surviving. If they were doing this no violence response sh**t, they would have been annihilated by now.

Benuue people should be wise and not play to the gallery, otherwise they would soon become another JOS forever.

I think this is a wrong move by the militant leader.Surrendering their weapons now exposes them to attack by the marauding fulani n jukum who are still with theirs. No effort has been made by government for these groups(fulanin jukum)to do same.I hope they don't regret it.

Imagine 20 of this kind in Benue.

this is why NIGERIA CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER WAR.

Arms proliferation has become terribly uncontrollable.

It means that this guy and his team can wipe out an entire village in one night.

The arms in Niger Delta and South East is shocking and OPC is not left out.

they have all embarked on arms racketeering and pile up since military era.
Militia groups in Nigeria are armed with the major ones heavily armed, I laugh when some people say a particular militia group is armed with Dane guns; they don't know that some groups are better armed than the Niger Delta militants but they will never reveal it to the public because the government will go after them. When Boko Haram issue started, some people were saying that Niger Delta militants should be allowed to finish them; I laughed in Swahili and argued that Boko Haram fighters are better trained, better armed and better motivated than the Niger Delta militants and this is evident today. I just thank God that God is helping the government to suppress this groups one after the other. Finally if I must say, that if another civil war occur ( God forbid ) it will be brief but more deadly than the previous one and the outcome will be the same, so far those alliances of the first civil war remain the same to a large extent; we don't need another civil war as thousands if not millions of precious lives will be lost; On which side will one fight when I have hausa friends, some igbos are my blood relatives, my ancestral root is Edo and I am Yoruba? It complex and I think it is madness to think of going to war against another tribe in Nigeria, its sheer madness! As we are all one in one way or another.
