Punctuality is simply doing things on or before time. While it's a life style it is also a conscious decision. A daily strive that gradually becomes easier.

If you are struggling to be punctual then you aren't alone. The concept of 'African Time' is one we all grew up with. It's a stereotype we must break free from. An indictment of the whole continent.

The first president of the United States of America was known for his punctuality.

Washington’s promptness extended to even his mealtimes as well. He ate dinner each day at exactly 4 o’clock, and when he invited members of Congress to dine with him, and they arrived late, they were often surprised to find the president halfway done with his meal or even pushing back from the table. To his startled, tardy guest he would say, “We are punctual here. My cook never asks whether the company has arrived, but whether the hour has come.”

And when Washington’s secretary arrived late to a meeting, and blamed his watch for his tardiness, Washington quietly replied, “Then you must get another watch, or I another secretary.”

The importance of being on time are just too innumerable.

It shows you are a master of yourself, dependable and that you value and respect others. There is simply no better way to have an impeccable first impression than when you are the first to arrive for a meeting, constantly. People notice even if they don't say anything. In fact they may even abuse you because you are making everyone else look bad. That's a good thing, Messi did the same to Boateng because he timed his dribbles to perfection.

Have you ever rushed to a meeting, late and needing even more minutes to get yourself together? Being punctual gives you confidence. Makes you calm and prepared. Puts you in a commanding position in life. You aren't sweaty and stinky but refreshed to tackle challenges.

Even in the entertainment industry it don't pay to be late. Justin Bieber was fined £300,000 for being late to a Concert, Madonna £135,000.

Time indeed is money.

Impact of tardiness

Staff lateness is said to have cost the UK economy £9 billion. Not chicken change. That would build the tallest building in the world more than eight times.

A lot of the benefits of being early are intangible, it's not everyday you win 'Most Punctual' awards but you would indeed notice you are respected because you respect yourself and others by being on time and valuing promptness.

How does one break free from the habit of lateness?
