The Article Every Nigerian From The South NEEDS To READ by Titilayodeji13(op): 6:51am On Sep 05, 2015
I am writing this post with a lot of caution and
trepidation. I have never subscribed to ethnic
chauvinism and I actually detest being labelled as
a tribal bigot. I am usually very careful because I
have friends and colleagues from every part of
the nation and some of my best friends are not
even from my side of the country.
However, recent events are making me to have a
deeper reflection and I wish we- Southerners in
this instance- can have some kind of
introspection. Out of 25 appointments made so
far, 18 are from the North, 3 are from the South
West, 4 are from the South South while the South
East has ZERO appointments. A tweet which I
saw today stated that “southerners are only
competent when it’s time for elections but
northerners are competent in terms of
governance” and this made the following
thoughts run through my mind:
1. Only Southerners have been accusing fellow
Southerners of corruption. Oshiomole has been
attacking Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as if Ngozi turned
down his marriage proposal. The same
Oshiomole tried to make nonsense of Akinwumi
Adeshina’s successes in the agriculture sector.
Ambode tried to pull Fashola down and
successfully smeared him with stains. Maybe
that’s why Fashola did not get the Chief of Staff
role. I’m yet to see a Northerner accuse another
Northerner of corruption, even when they belong
to different parties. The closest a Northerner got
was when the new Kano State Governor attacked
Rabiu Kwankaso but he quickly sheathed his
sword and even disowned previous reports of
attacks. Why are we like this?
2. Are Southerners the only ones who are
corrupt? Were there no northerner heading the
ministries and parastatals? Did the outgone
Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko
not have an alleged case of certificate forgery but
he still served out his tenure until he resigned
voluntarily? I’m not in support of corruption under
any guise but the fight against corruption must
not be seen to be sectional.
3. How come it’s easier for the President to
believe that Sanni Abacha was not corrupt in
spite of recovered loot while it is so easy for him
to believe Goodluck Jonathan is irredeemably
corrupt?
4. I still remember that aside from God, Tinubu
made Tambuwal what he is today. The same
Tambuwal would later call Femi Gbajabiamila
‘incompetent’ and rated Dogara as more
competent. The same Tambuwal was propped up
by Tinubu, a Southerner against a fellow
Southerner, Mulikat Akande. Obasanjo was very
key to denying Goodluck Jonathan a second
term. A good number can still recall how OBJ tore
his PDP membership card in public glare. The
Northerners find it easy to support themselves
but we are always pulling ourselves down.
Babangida Aliyu, Sule Lamido and all the other
Northern Governors including the former PDP
Chairman Adamu Muazu often times refused to
campaign for Goodluck Jonathan openly and
many times even espoused the virtues of the
opposing candidate on the rostrum!
5. Southern leaders and Presidents pull down
Southern business men but prop up Northern
ones. How many people still remember how
Obasanjo ran Mike Adenuga out of town but both
Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan made Aliko
Dangote what he is today. No northern leader
goes against their own. I dare to put it on record
that President Buhari will never go against Aliko
Dangote for any reason.
6. How come OBJ pardoned Salisu Buhari, the ex-
Speaker who forged his credentials and he later
was given an appointment as a Governing Council
member of a University and heavens did not fall-
but when Goodluck Jonathan pardoned
Alamieyeseigha it became one of the major issues
counted against him? Is there one rule for some
and another rule for others?
7. We find it easy to raise our voices in support of
the deportation of Buruji Kashamu but have no
qualms with Atiku Abubakar strutting around the
corridors of power.
8. Only Southerners find it so easy to abuse their
elders when they voice opinions not in tandem
with the popular opinion. We find it easy to diss
Afenifere elders and call them ‘Afenifebi’ while
hurling expletives and curses at them. We even
abuse our kings and priests. Northerners will
never abuse an Emir no matter how unpopular
what he said is. Can you imagine any Northerner
raising his voice against the Sultan? In spite of
Tanko Yakassai, Balarabe Musa and Dangiwa
Umar’s perceived support for Jonathan, northern
youths did not abuse them. But our own youths
run down our elders on social media while our
educated elite also support the act.
These are some of the thoughts that have been
running through my mind. I don’t pretend to have
all the answers and I do this at the risk of being
labelled an ethnic bigot. The point however is that
Southerners have to get their acts right. We have
to put our house in order. The bickering must
stop. Let’s engage our emotional intelligence.
Let’s not allow others to exploit our tendency to
self-destruct.

Don't make it sound like it's a geopolitical thing cos I know it ain't. Are the nnpc boss and cbn gov not igbos? Abi it is only during biafra brouhaha they identify with delta igbos as brothers?

Op some of us don't care about the south as a whole but the SW.

I read it and I felt like crying seeing how these apc touts pull down the SW for the north. There is nothing tambuwal can do that AKANDE cannot do but just because she is not of Tinubu, she was destroyed politically by some yoruba idiots.

Now Gbajabiamila wants the position he is crying blue water. I literally feel yoruba youths to stone him to death for this act of betrayer and stu.oidity

Keep quiet Liar, you have never been to the North.

Is it not puzzling that the best built cities and roads are in the North (except Lagos)?

Again is it not puzzling and embarrassing to you that those you malign as ignorant and uneducated have bettered you and ruled you for decades? How about the fact that the competent people so far appointed that are bringing change are northerners after 16 years of disastrous and corrupt rule by southerners?

How come you have not been able to trick and dominate the North if you're any smarter? How come the North comes out winning in EVERY political calculation in this country and has maintained its status as darling of the west for decades?

The truth is you are wallowing in the same poverty (difference is less than 20% without factoring population differences) and suffer sickening societal problems like armed robbery, prostitution, ritual killing, baby factories, 419, Drug trafficking etc yet the North that has its own challenges has been the one that has been able to consistently dominate politics while feeding the country with all the food, meat, vegetables, grains etc and for the first time since the disastrous military rule, to take control of government to improve her fortunes.

well this message is mostly for the southwest, they are the Hercules heel of the south. the northerners are very loyal to authority and their religious head who can call them to other and sheath their swords but in the south especially in the south east, everyone is a king nobody to call the politicians to order.

I seem to agree with MikelEleta. I have been to the north!

Great people but a lot still needs to be done to enhance literacy and reduce poverty. The rich are very rich; and the poor are very poor.

@Topic,

It is healthy for the South to probe leaders who have betrayed the trust reposed in them. It is the only sure fire way to continuous development!

I will gain nothing by denigrating the North. You are right, I served in Sokoto and it was an amazing year. I will always cherish the fond memories.

However, I noticed that there is an ethnoreligious influence in the attitude towards education. Religious schools seem to gain precedence over secular education. Local media enlightenment is primarily through the native language. In this era of globalization, it is high time the methodology is changed for emerging generations.

Poverty is on the increase in the North because the leaders have not harnessed a concerted vision to develop the regions. There are no population control measures. Yes there are good roads but no attendant complementing industries to boost the economy of most of the Northern States. The per capita income if the average northerner is way below the threshold buying power for basic goods and commodities.

The first step to liberation will be to accept that there is an endemic problem in the North. Secondly, identify the root cause. Thirdly study countries and economies with similar ethnoreligious and climatic nomenclature (e.g UAE). Develop a regional plan and commence implementation via portfolio management strategies; starting with the most important plan. Fourthly, commence the process of reorientation. Make English common and compulsory in all formal form of communication. Encourage all wards to go to school. In 20 years, the North will surpass the South in development if these measures are considered.

Anout 20 years ago, while I was in Senior Class in Secondary School, "Black Jap" finally was allowed to pass out after 15 years as a student. He could not be rusticated because he was a Northerner. After a while, he was being promoted without passing any exams in a Federal Government College. This favoritism is why it is very difficult for most of such youths to develop their cognitive intuition requisite to cope with the global world. The last resort is usually public service or politics.

Lastly, I am Yoruba by tribe but acknowledge the Igbos have far developed their regions (except for Lagos) more than we have. There are still mud houses in my village. Most Igbo villages I have visited have been upgraded to towns with contemporary styled Architecture. The primary reason is because, Igbos have industralized their regions, embraced education (an average Igbo person can at least speak a derivative of English - pidgin) advanced in the tenets of global trade and promote a congruous culture of upgrading their homestead before others. On the other hand, we Yorubas are very enlightened and educated but often times incongruous. We will rather develop the cosmopolitan cities than develop our villages.

My 2 cents though!

Bro this moniker is specifically for bigots like you that go around denigrating the North while pretending they're any better.

Edo? Of all places? That town cannot even match Sokoto in terms of development not to talk of larger northern states. Is it Ugbor Amagba Road that is a highway to Hell or Psychiatric road iduwowina? The same Edo whose daughters are dying daily by the hundreds in the Libyan desert trying to escape debilitating poverty by selling their bodies?

Stop being a hypocrite and stand up to your leaders to demand a respite from this debilitating poverty and suffering.

Bros, I do not know where your village is, but there are a lot of towns and villages in the South-West that have been highly upgraded. wink

Akure, Ibadan, Ado-Ekiti, Osogbo, etc., have been upgraded to a large extent. There are still areas in Lagos (e.g. Agege, Agbado-Ijaye) that boast of mud-houses. undecided

While central Abeokuta still has a number of old houses among the rocky hills that encircle the town, there are several suburbs of Abeokuta which boast of a lot of new buildings that would rival those of most state capitals starting from the BRA to Ibara and parts of Kuto (hope I got the spelling right!).

Sango Otta, Isheri North, and Alagbado are other areas of Ogun State that have benefited from its proximity with Lagos, in terms of infrastructure. As a field staff, my work has taken me to different parts of the country. I have seen these places, so I know what has been done there. sad Are you saying there are no mud houses in the villages located in the South-East?? shocked shocked
