We have the energy, ability and  knowlegde. Nigeria too can be force to reckon with only if we let go of triblism, nepotism, Corruption, favoritism and the rest of the other madness.

We have the population.

I agree with you. But successive failed governments in Nigeria have destroyed the educational system and promoted ethnic distrust as a divide-and-rule tactics. The poor educational infrastructure and disunity has resulted in the celebration of mediocrity at every level.

That being said, India has a population advantage over Nigeria and an English advantage (my term) over China. This is further enhanced by the almost drama-free relationship India has had with the United States for over six decades and solid educational infrastructure. All these have combined to make India the giant in all things "software" today.

Can't we as Nigerians create synergy? Is there nothing we can do than wait for Govt?

Ofcourse we can do a lot! We can do a lot but at the end of the day, it is likely to amount to nothing if we do not tackle the problem of government. Even if every Nigerian in diaspora where to contribute $1000 each, at the end of the day, we will still have to deal with government and corruption issues. We can not keep trying to dribble around the major issues. It has not worked for us and will likely never work.
Re: Indians Are Taking Over The World - Let Us Nigerians Unite Our Energy by proudly9ja(m): 5:31pm On Apr 23, 2009
I agree with you tbh. I pray God can give us a sincere government. That is all we need. We the people will do the rest.

If we had a sincere govt,

Nigerians in Diaspora can contribute (even at $50 per month for 100 people, that is $5,000/month and $60,000/annum) and start up small agric coys in Nigeria. This will engage hundreds of Nigerians in useful employment at all levels.

Middle class Nigerians can contribute #10,000monthly. 100 of these is #1,000,000 per month and #12,000,000/annum.

There is so much we can do with synergy, so much. We just need the govt to be sincere. We can create global multinationals. Look at what one man (Adenuga) has done with Glo, think of how many Nigerians are smarter and than he is. Think of what these Nigerians can do when they come together.

Pray God? What has God to do with this? He has given us all brains, hands and feet. Every other country on this planet has had to fight to see change. Why should ours be any different?

Why should Nigerians in Diaspora, or anywhere else contribute even a dime of their hard earned money in such a way? Why? Why didn’t America suggest that every single American contribute $1000 each to bail out the country? Why do we pay taxes and allow them access to oil money and then have to contribute money in the end from our own personal pockets to change things?

Don’t you see? We do not need government to be sincere; we need to see to it that we do all on our part to make government sincere. We do not need to create multinationals to solve the problem we continue to run from dealing with in Nigeria. We do not need Adenuga, and glo and all that crap to change the lives of the Nigerian people. Nigerians have brains with or without Dangote, Adenuga and all those. They are just ordinary people who happen to have big money, simple. Nothing more!! They cannot change the country and all the glo phones in the world will not change Nigeria.

America is not America because of Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. America is America because the average American takes it upon himself to do his part by voting every election for the right people.

I see your points but I still maintain that the future or Nigerians still lies in our hands. The suggestions I gave above are just the ways I see things, you may have better ideas but the basics is that our destinies is in our hands.

I begged for a sincere govt because that is what I feel is lacking. Who I am begging, I really do not know. I am just fed up of the inadequacies and stupidity and I wish I had more wicked words to describe them. People are dying before their time, the average Nigerian cannot achieve his goals without cutting corners, schools are dilapidated ie if we can still call them schools and the most painful thing is, I think and I hope Im wrong, but I strongly think Nigerians do not know how much deep sh*t we are in. I am sad when Nigerians still talk about quality education. Is it UI or Unilag or OAU or UNIBEN or ABU?? I am so sorry for calling names. Im a graduate of one of these schools too so I know what Im saying. It stinks, stinks to high heavens. And what is Govt doing? Sharing Ghana must go everyday, talking about distributing uniforms for elections, waiting 8 solid weeks to deal with corrupt thieves, and all sort of rubbish!

Over 20 years after Sonny Okosuns asked the question, I still wanna ask again,

WHICH WAY NIGERIA!

What I have been saying from day one on Nairaland is that the future of Nigeria lies in the hands of every single Nigerian out there. Not the government, but every Nigerian who is fed up with the situation.

proudly9ja:

I think if you really believe that the future of the country lies in our hands, the Nigerian people, and then you would agree that you ought to be begging every Nigerian out there for a sincere government. Bottom-line is that we are the reason why we continue to have bad government problems. We are responsible for these goons coming in each day to bully and steal from us.

I believe the statement in bold is not far from the truth.

I attended one of the Nigerian universities myself and I know what you are talking about.

I happen to know someone who works at the house of assembly and she tells of how these men come in to share booty and then come back for more later. In fact, was just getting info on how the PDP convention went. Lol. The same set of people are ready for a comeback in 2011, and not until the average Nigerian out there realizes change will not come without action on their part, will we see it.

This is the major challenge. With all due respect to Nigerians but I have come to realise that we are not ready for change. When Gani Fawehinmi contested and lost his presidential bid, they asked him to comment on the elections. He didn't condemn the elections neither did he mention the total rigging that happened during that election like all those who lost were saying, rather he made a statement that I am now beginning to understand. He said, ''The people deserve the govt they get''. Obj, Yaradua, Tinubu, etc cannot come down to the ward levels to rig elections, nah, it is us Nigerians, the ones who suffer the crunch (abi na austerity or sap or whatever name you wanna call the credit crunch we have been suffering since independence), we are the ones who will send out our mothers and grandmothers during election campaigns in aso ebis under the sun or in the rain, we are the ones who send out our children in school uniforms to line the road and wave flags of corrupt thieves, we are the ones who will go out and sell our consience and futures for 50,100,1000naira just to thumbprint for the the man who will further send our youths to their early graves by refusing to equip hospitals, schools, etc. And whats more painful, we have not realised it. We will prolly do the same thing in 2011.

God bless Nigeria.

Yep!!

ExactlY!!

So you see, at the end of the day, we are the reason why things continue the way they are. And not until we, individuals, decide to say NO MORE, will we see things change!

I know it is way easier to sit lobbing stones at those in government, blaming them for it all but continuing to deny that we greatly enable the situation by our continued inaction only digs the hole deeper for us, not them. At the end of the day, the Nigerian people are the ones sufferering and will suffer if we do not change things.

We're not even seeing change in sight. . . . i feel well meaning nigerians should come together to form a government under the present nigeria. . . . a government that's geared towards developmrnt and nothing more.
Re: Indians Are Taking Over The World - Let Us Nigerians Unite Our Energy by Horus(m):
Nigerians should unite their energy with all other Africans nations. How many Nigerians are purchasing an African person's service or product First?. Every group of people understands practices and strategically utilizes the concept of economic violence, except African people. In fact the economic violence that we, as African people, practice is economic violence against ourselves. Economic violence is the art and science of using the exchange of money for goods and/or services as an aspect of ethnic warfare, survival and prosperity. The Indians will not support an African business over their own, because they are not interested in ethnic suicide. The Indians are logical, as self preservation is the most basic of human instincts. So not only will an Indian person not support an African business over an Indian business, they take it one step further and plant their business in an African community or country and implement plans to take African people's money. This ideological posture is pure and scientific economic violence. Replace Indian with any other ethnic group besides African, and the picture becomes clearer. This is not a condemnation of Indian,Chinese, Korean, Arab or white businesses at all. It is a condemnation of African people who have forgotten The Honorable Marcus Garvey's mantra of "Race First". It is in my interest to come from a powerful people. Therefore, my interest is committing economic violence on behalf of African people. That means purchasing an African person's service or product "first" before I purchase any other ethnic group or race's service or product.

Africans will hide under "the world is now a global village" to justify their actions.

easier said than done.

why didnt you guys remain in nigeria to ''patronise'' africanism
why didnt some people go to nigerian schools

why should i patronise somebody just b/c he is african when his product/service is bullsh-t

listen, we must do our groundwork first. let the nigerian enterpreneur get his acts right. trust me, patronage would never be a problem. have u been to a nigerian store in the UK/US compared to a ghanian store?
this argument is like dolly akunyili improving nigeria's image/patriotism without doing the homework of improving govt responsibility.

in africa, change cannot come from bottom-up, but from top-bottom. we have a culture of docility spaning centuries and it is virtually in our DNA. only a revolution can change this status but i dont advocate for that now. change and responsibility must come from top to bottom. it will be gradual in nigeria, but it will come.
