There are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may yield to agitations to pick a  substantive national chairman from the North-east to replace Chief Uche Secondus who is presently functioning in acting capacity.

As part of measures to reposition the PDP and refocus its agenda away from the shortcomings of the past, the post-election committee headed by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwerenmadu, is expected to submit its report on September 23.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, confirmed the date for the submission of the post-election report to THISDAY yesterday.

Metuh confirmed in a telephone conversation that the committee would conclude its assignment and submit the report.

Secondus, who until recently was the deputy national chairman (south), took over from Adamu Mua’zu after he resigned from the office in May.

THISDAY gathered from a top  PDP source that the leadership of the opposition party is making arrangements to convene a major stakeholders’ conference to chart a new course.
According to the source who spoke to THISDAY on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, the stakeholders’ conference is planned to hold after the receipt of the report of the Ekwerenmadu-led committee.

The source said the party hopes to under study the report of the committee for subsequent presentation to the stakeholders’ summit planned for early October.

It was also learnt that the stakeholders’ summit is expected to act as a testing ground to sound out the feelings of the members on the plan to restructure the party.

It said, based on the recommendations of the committee, the party would embark on reforms as well as other strategies intended to help revamp the fading popularity of the PDP.

“PDP is hoping to have a stakeholders’ conference to evaluate its performance at the last general elections and seek better ways to forge ahead. The report of the post election is the only thing holding back the conference which is expected to galvanise support for the party through aggressive membership registration,” he said.

The post-election committee had sat quietly all these days in order to consider the over 1,000 memoranda submitted to it by members of the party, some of whom expressed grievances about how they were treated during last general elections.

The Ekwerenmadu led-committee was inaugurated on June 30 with an initial two weeks deadline but had to be granted more time enable it conclude its assignment.Immediately after inauguration, the committee set up three task teams to hold public hearings in the six geo-political zones of the country.

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, is heading the committee for the South-south and South-east zones; Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedoku is heading the North-east and North-west zones, while Hon. Emeka Ihedioha heads the committee overseeing the North-central and South-west zones.

The committee is specifically tasked to collate more information from members across the geo-political zones. Ekweremadu, at the end of their meeting yesterday in Abuja, disclosed that each of the task teams would cover two geopolitical zones.

It is well. He is only an acting chairman thus, they can elect anyone according to their constitution. The caption seems unfair to the party though as it does not give the true picture of the situation as contained in the body.
