Manchester United will be seeking an improved showing in the competition after being humbled by Milton Keynes Dons in the second round of last season's competition. But Ipswich Town, who have made a decent start to their Championship campaign, will provide a stern test for whichever Reds XI takes to the field this week. These sides last met in the 2001/02 league season, when United won 4-0 at home and 1-0 at Portman Road.

Form guide: United are second in the Barclays Premier League table after bouncing back from the Champions League setback in Eindhoven by winning 3-2 at Southampton on Sunday. Louis van Gaal will be keen to maintain that momentum with victory in the first of three successive home games in three different competitions for his side, with Sunderland and Wolfsburg also visiting Old Trafford before September is out. Ipswich were held 1-1 at home by Birmingham City on Friday and, though they were also thumped 5-1 at Reading a fortnight ago, the Tractor Boys sit in fifth in the fledgling Championship table. They've already beaten Stevenage and Doncaster Rovers to reach this stage of the League Cup.
