The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), has said Nigeria was officially informed and properly invited to the high level meeting where Boko Haram insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin was discussed.

Speaking exclusively to Premium Times, a spokesperson for UNOCHA, Jens Laerke, who is based in Geneva said an invite was sent to the permanent representative of the Nigerian mission to the United Nations as well as to the office of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, prior to the departure of the Nigerian delegation to the 70th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

This counters claims by the presidency that they were neither informed nor invited to the meeting.

Reports had surfaced at the weekend that the Nigerian delegation UN general Assembly had missed an important meeting where help for displaced persons were to be discussed.

In reaction, Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant on media and publicity to the president, had said the meeting which the Nigerian delegation missed was not one of the official meetings President Muhammadu Buhari and his delegations were due to attend at the United Nations.

Laerke said: “I’m almost 100 per cent sure that Nigeria was invited. One of the reasons was that I read the original speech by O’Brien in which he acknowledged the presence of the Nigerian government.

“Actually, the government was invited both by direct communication to the Vice President and then subsequently through the permanent representation in New York.

“My colleague told me he actually went there personally to hand over the invitation to make sure they receive the invitation. We really made an effort to make sure the government was aware of the invitation because we really want them to come.”

The spokesperson for UNOCHA could however, not provide a documentary evidence that the Nigerian mission was actually informed, and indeed received and acknowledged the invitation as he demanded an official letter before that could be made available.

When Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesperson was contacted on the insistence by the UN that Nigeria was invited to the event, he replied: “Ask them to give you evidence that the invitation was delivered, and the name of the staff who received it. Prof. Joy Ogwu said there was no invitation. We need evidence before anyone can say what she said is inaccurate.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had yesterday condemned the absence of President Buhari and the Nigerian delegation at one of the key listed meeting. The PDP had said their absence at the meeting showed the ineptitude of the handlers of the President on national and international issues.

Why so much lies trailing this government. I still pity some people that still believe in this govt. They need to convinced Nigerians that they are ready to be transparent and stop this embarrasment to Nigerians. Highly disappointed.

Joy Ogwu should be heavily sanctioned for dereliction of duty. She should be made to understand this isn't Jogogoro's era where a lackadaisical approach to important events were the order of the day. It is her Job to coordinate the president's itinerary and she has obviously failed in that regard. Sack the layabout and let the Wailers go to hell is it pleases them.

It's interesting how you decide to pick out the point that suits your argument using 'almost 100%' so the woman can be blamed while leaving out the fact that 'a letter of invitation was also sent to the office of the Vice President'. Will you also term this a 'sabotage' by the VP? You guys denied the president being invited previously but now that a letter was sent to the VP, will you say they were not duly informed? Except you want to say the president and his vice operate on different wavelengths.

You know, you used to make sense on Nairaland and were previously objective ditto for other supporters but right now, I can't say anymore. Party affiliation has killed many here - APC and PDP inclusive.

People here on Nairaland accused Joy Ogwu of sabotage saying she is from 'the land of 5%, the flat.heads, the erosion-ridden land, the land known for having baby factories' so therefore, they will do everything to make sure this government fails; can you also apply the same to the side of the VP? I am asking all you hypocrites. . . undecided

And the VP that was also invited nko?

A responsible leader is known to accept responsibility for the actions and inactions of his subordinates or team members. Any attempt to shift blames is not only unacceptable, but a display of the height of irresponsibility of APC, this PMB led government, and her paid online trolls.

May God save our nation and this variety of hypocritical leaders of tomorrow.

Actually VP Osibanjo and Buhari are the major culprits in this saga.

Osibanjo received the official invitation for the Nigerian government, and had all the time in the world to bring it to Buhari's attention so that it can be assigned a priority level.
Buhari did not see it wise to have a foreign affairs minister.

Osibanjo received the invitation weeks or months before Joy Ogwu. Joy Ogwu's invitation is not even the main invitation.

Buhari, Osibanjo and the SGF have questions to answer

I do not think this is about looking for faults. What was the media and opposition supposed to do under this cicumstance? Praise or defend the presisent or the presidency?

If the UN had not refuted the lie by the presidency, would it not have made them look either incompetent or unprepared for that meeting, before the international community.

Our president and his handlers missed an opportunity to endear themselves to the masses by coming clean on the situation and apologising to Nigerians for that obvious oversight. The backlash would have had a different direction. But coming with such bare faced lies is a no no.

Its unpresidential to take lies, propaganda and deception to the international stage. It will only court us more international enemies.

Competency is the problem here, noting more noting less!!!

The presidency just tried to cover up their inadequacy with some feeble excuses instead for them to agree that somebody somewhere did not do his work correctly.

How can a meeting of such a great importance be held without any pre-information to the people that are concerned most especially Nigeria at the most concerned nation

What the presidency need to do is to apologize to the nigerians for their monumental failure, cause i believe the UN authority has rightly refuted the presidency's lame excuses as stated in the op.

No mind them.

Propaganda has brought them this far; but unfortunately, it may not be able to sustain them further or longer than this.
