The 83 senators that passed vote of confidence on Senate President Bukola Saraki committed contempt of court charges, a Bauchi-based lawyer, Barrister Samaila Idris, has said.

Idris, in an interview in Bauchi, yesterday faulted the action of the 83 senators arguing that they do not have right to do so when the case is pending before the law court.

He said “the 83 senators that passed vote of confidence on Saraki deserved public sanction because they disrespected the authority of the court. Their act is nothing but contempt of court; it’s totally contemptuous because this matter is pending before the court.

“Do they want to tell Nigerians that if Saraki is found guilty after trial, he will still remain the Senate President? If he is found guilty, he will become a convict, so will an ex-convict be a Senate President? So there act regarding the vote of confidence is contemptuous because there is a court proceeding that they suppose to obey.


“These Senators deserved to be recalled back by their respective constituency for such actions”.
On why Saraki has not been charged to court over the false declaration of asset until he became the Senate President, Barrister Idris said “legally, criminal offenses are not status bared so if Saraki made false declaration some years ago, that should not stop the institution for prosecuting him, if need be because there are offenses you could commit in 10 to 20 years, yet you can still be tried after a long period.

“We are not actually looking at the conten t of the charges against Saraki that one is left for the lawyers to argue in court, what Nigerians are concern with is his refusal to comply with the demand of the court. As the leader of the lawmaking body of the country people expect him to have shown exemplary leadership by obeying the court order but it was wrong for him to have floated the order of the court,” he said.

how has legislature proceedings in tandem with court rulings? Does that stop his trials in court?Nonsense

The 8th Senate is the most useless Senate ever. Their vote of confidence will NOT have any effect on the trial against Saraki!

we all know their vote of confidence cannot stop his trials, they were only deceiving themselves. But this post of yours has not answered my question. What makes the lawyer a Tinubu lawyer? Is it being against the vote of confidence passed by the pro-Saraki senators?

as far as saraki trial is concern saraki is a goner a thief that should be sent to jail.

The court can not rule on suitability of Saraki as Senate President. The court can only rule on Saraki being a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

However the 83 Senators endorsed Saraki's leadership of the Senste and that is an internal Senate matter which the court has no say on

So long as the court has not removed Saraki from being a member of the Senate the Senators can continue to uphold his leadership

There is no contempt of court here as these are 2 different issues!

Also keep in mind that Saraki has appeared before the tribunal and subjected himself to the due process of the law. He is innocent until proven guilty and should for all intents and purposes remain Senate President until he is found guilty by the relevant bodies.

Trial by media and bullying the senate president will not stand.

We already knew our Senators are THIEVES and CORRUPTION personified. They are SHAMELESS too.
