Who told you Gambians don't complain?

My guy, no yarn wetin you no know.

I heard complaints first hand from villagers when Jammeh took their land in Brufut and sold to Sheraton without consultation or compensation. Also when land near Tanje was taken to build AU complex for AU summit, no one was consulted or compensated. The same houses were later sold to private individuals by Jammeh.

Most of these actors own houses especially the old ones as mentioned above. They own duplexes in the villages not to talk of towns. Eg. Osuofia, Pete Edochie. Etc

Since when did actors & actresses start building anything that reasonably adds to a nation's economy? What would they build? Hotel or nite club? Check well, the peasant farmers in that country wouldn't have access to land, yet we're complaining of hunger in Africa. When would our reasoning even change?

I just hope the land he gave away is part of his own. This kind recognition is long overdue for Nollywood for the reasons he gave...that the actors are cultural ambassadors of Africa period..... African cultures showcased by Africans.... soooooo lacking and soooo unknown by millions....in fact by generationsss of AFRICANS in the diaspora. Nollywood changed all that... a window for those in the diaspora to look into the heart and soul of Africans. It took a Gambian president to recognize...hats off to him. JAMB Question. Would you be happy if Buhari gave your family's ancestral land to Jim Iyke?
LOL! This truly is a JAMB question but for clarity, I explain -

Firstly, you must understand that by law, all land belongs to the government. That is why businesses and other commercial Ventures pay what is called 'Ground Tenement' to the LGAs in which they are located, even if they have OWN the land.

Secondly, this is Gambia we are talking about here. Not South Africa, Not Egypt, GAMBIA. Where does Gambia stand economically? Fiscally, Infrastructurally, Socially, where do they stand? Their President, been a Wise son who has development of his home at hand made a bold move to ATTRACT foreign investment.

Dubai is Dubai today because someone made similar decision. Multinational Organizations are literally PULLED to Dubai because it is TAX FREE! When you decide to set up shop there, there is a commission assigned the sole task of assisting you until you commence operations. Land is relatively CHEAP GOLD for the MOs. The effect is what is putting Dubai on your bucket list today.

Like I earlier asked. What are the Gambian villagers going to do with hundreds and thousands of acres and acres of land? Are they going to build Factories there? Are they going to establish Schools, Malls, Hospitals etc on the land? If Yes, to what STANDARD?

His allocation of the 'Free Land' to Nollywood Stars is a Questionable but WISE decision.

There are not hundreds and thousands of acres in the areas we are talking about, just a few dozen acres.

Secondly, Government does not have right to claim land which is already in private hands. This is an issue Africa has a problem with. The vast wilderness of America is only 28% owned by US Govt and this applies to wilderness, forests, swamps and unclaimed lands.

Zimbabwe and South Africa also have problems of white settler Govt claiming ancestral lands and giving out to white settlers. In this case, Jammeh has taken village lands and given out to Nigerian settlers. You can be sure he has not paid for it, and no acre of land in Banjul area is currently unclaimed.

I repeat, Govt has no right to claim fallow land and dispense as it wishes. The land that houses Sheraton hotel in Gambia belongs to a village. They did not develop it because they use that beach as access to the sea and for their villagers recreation area. Whether or not they develop it, it has been theirs for centuries and they have a purpose for it. For Govt to take their land without compensation, simultaneously denying them access to their beach area is not ethical.

We as African people do not have deed or title to our village lands. Village was Govt to itself 100 years ago. It does not mean new Colonial Govts supercede traditional inheritance.

It's a simple issue. The land on which Sheraton was built is probably worth $100k. The hotel itself makes millions. Putting the right value on the land will not deter investment on that scale. However if you grab the kand without compensation, you are merely rent-seeking.

I believe films like Mirror by Genevieve were shot in Gambia. If Jammeh wants to encourage investment in the Gambian movie industry, he should invest in a decent studio and improve the filmmaking infrastructure in Gambia, not give out stolen land to his favourite stars. New Zealand has never dashed out land to Hollywood stars to entice them over, yet they keep flocking for films like Lord of the Rings etc.

Although some of your analogies are irregular with the case on ground, you have some valid points. Perhaps, the President should have 'bought' the land from the villagers. We (I) don't know if he did or not.

What however if for sure is DEVELOPMENT comes faster to those who go after it aggressively! It never went to the one who waited for buyers. smiley

BTW LOL @ 'dozen acres'! Is Gambia not a countryhuh?

Just when we are discussing this issue of land grab in Africa, this hits FP. . . . this time in Lagos State, not just any village. . . .

https://www.nairaland.com/2660432/tajudeen-disu-killed-land-fracas

The Managing Director of the Lekki Free Zone Ltd, Mr. Tajudeen Disu is among persons killed as Ibeju-Lekki villagers and mobile police officers clashed in Okunraiye community near Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, this morning. Tajuden Disu

The villagers said they were on a peaceful protest against "forceful takeover" of their land by the Lagos state government on behalf of Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko Dangote and the Lekki Free Zone Ltd when policemen attacked them reportedly killing two of the protesters instantly.

The villagers said the killing resulted in a crisis.

A local chief in the area told Saharareporters that the Lekki Free Zone Ltd called in anti-riot policemen of "Mopol 49" to kill the protesters because they had insisted too long ago against forceful acquisition of the community land by the Lekki Free Zone Ltd for the construction of a large petrochemical refinery owned by Mr. Dangote. The chief said the Mopol were led and supervised to the protest scene by Managing Director of the Lekki Free Zone Ltd, Mr. Disu.

But Mr. Disu was also among those downed as the police officers guarding him and protesters clashed, according to the local chief. One of the police officers was also feared dead. The community has been taken over by soldiers reinforced to the community as the crisis escalated.

The village is currently being raided by Nigerian troops sent to the community as a result of the crisis. Many villagers have vacated the village out of fear.

You see... this is the 'exception'. Unfortunately, this exception is the QUO in Africa! Whereby a government (bureaucratic) can literally hijack and uproot an existing CULTURE, SETTLEMENT or HAMLET for personal gain! I just read this case bro. It is the exception. We all know that thousands of $$$s would have flowed from the Hausa Elite to the Executive Houseboy Governor!

This is not the first time it is happening in Nigeria, in fact, the FCT is a testament to this unsanctimonious Land Grabbing canker worm! The FG pursued the original owners and occupiers of Abuja (the Gwaris) form the main metropolis to places like Kubwa and Bwari. They then built their now 'seat of power'. This is an African issue bro. On a normal condition, 'Land Grabbing' if you chose to use this dictum is LEGAL when utilized for the DEVELOPMENTAL and CONSTITUTIONAL purposes. However, the 'victims' MUST be properly and ADEQUATELY reimbursed!

Omission of the last clause is FAILURE and FRAUD on the part of the government!
