Very unnecessary choice of words. Totally off point as everybody understood wat AnamCity implied and as it stands today, that is the truth.

The Obi of Onitsha has distinguished himself and is now the acting Nri Priest or Eze Nri.(The Custodian of igbo culture.)

Nri Priest or Eze Nri has to come from somewhere in igboland and all road at present leads to Onitsha.

None of this is relevant.
Congrats to the Obi of Onitcha for his celebrity. Asaba is older than Onitcha and Onitcha started as an extension of Asaba. Let everyone play in their own lane

Dunce shut up. We are not saying because Obi of Onitsha is the most influential and most powerful KING in Igboland that by that stand he is ruling the whole Igboland. We are saying that he is the foremost KING in Igboland. All other kings with the exception of Eze Nri and Igwe Orizu of Nnewi are all inconsequential village rulers.

Nwanne this is the problem I have with some Ignorant and misguided supremacist amongst us. The authority of the Obi of Onitsha ends in his area let alone nearby Obosi and Ogbaru. It is even an insult to say he is the custodian of Igbo culture. The same applies to every King in Igboland.

I won't even go Igbo-wide,Anambra state alone will suffice.
The Onitsha monarchy, though presiding over a well known city, does not and cannot hold a candle to the Eze Nri and the Igwe Nnewi.
Being popular does not a custodian of culture nor foremost King make.Onitsha monarchy is but a baby placed beside the antiquity of Nri or Nnewi.
If any traditional ruler in Anambra should lay claim to being custodian of Igbo culture,it's the Eze Nri followed by Igwe Nnewi.
Go check how the Traditional Rulers Council in Anambra is ordered, backed by law, before you make more childish show of yourself.
Btw,the Emirship of Kano may be popular, but his overlord still remain the Sultan of Sokoto.
You would educate me over something you know nothing about, smh.
Let's not detract from celebrating a worthy monarch,an awesome heritage.Just cool it with the overly enthusiastic verbiage.

Eze Nri and Igwe Nnewi would come before Obi of Onitsha.

But don't forget that Igbo culture has been messed up by moneybags. Without his wealth, Igwe Achebe will not be influential.

Just a side note, even some towns today have retired and professional 419ers as Igwe. That's how much Igbo culture has been dismantled. Go figure!

Where did Igwe Nnewi come into the picture? Eze Nri or Nri Priest can come from any of the many respectable Royal fathers in Igboland.

It should be for a life-time and not hereditary. It can be rotational by distinguished performance, nomination or zoning.

I don't like arguing unnecessarily but I will educate you over this. Obi of Onitsha is the only king in Igboland you can mention on the same page with Emir of Kano, Ooni of Ife and Oba of Benin. In otther words the Obi of Onitsha, Emir of Kano, Ooni of Ife and Oba of Benin are the frontline kings in Nigeria and even in West Africa because some of them dates back to 1500AD. Coming to Igboland, Obi of Onitsha is the most influential and most recognized among all other low lying kings.

What about the Sultan of sokoto, alafin of Oyo, olu of warri etc. We call them first class kings or paramount rulers (including the ones you mentioned and a few we both didn't mention).

Everyone hold your peace!

It is a fact that most of these people claiming to have "most influential kings" are not proper Igbos in real sense.

Onitshas are hybrid Igbos whose ancestry is traceable to Benin; a fact that have never been disputed or refuted. They are even more comfortable identifying with Benins than Igbos. For the avoidance of doubt why is he called Agbogidi? What does that mean in Igbo?

As for Nri stock, facts kiss are beginning to emerge that they have Igala ancestory. They have been smart to deceive the authentic Igbos with their concocted history of ERI and GAD.

I strongly believe that "Igbo enweghi Eze". I make bold to say that most of you making claims of superiority of your king over others ARE NOT NDIGBO. You are either ORU (hybrid) or MBIARA-ABIA (migrants).

That is why seasoned historians seek out the Eze Nri when it comes to authentic Igbo cultural authorities as in https://www.nairaland.com/730776/eze-nri-enweleana-ii-goziri

That is why Israels ambassador in Nigeria pay Eze Nri visits regularly.
That is why the US ambassador visited Eze Nri sometime last year, bearing in my that Agukwu-Nri is just a village.

THUNDER4real:
People argue unnecessarily, :The following are facts:
There's no king given full recognition by the ibos.
Obi of Onitsha is the only recognized king in Nigeria and International wise from the East.
90 to 100% of people living in the East has heard of or know Obi of Onitsha.
96% to 100% of individuals(hausa, yoruba, ijaw, Efik, Tiv etc.) that schooled in Nigeria has heard of or know Obi of Onitsha.

That is not true becos we have kings in Enugu, but they are not popular(powerful) for now.

It is down to personality and hard work. That Igwe (Obi of Onitsha) is tall, visible and influential. There have been other Obi of Onitsha but not this powerful.

There is no Igwe of Enugu. Enugu is not a single town. What we have is Igwe Nike, Nike being one of the towns that make up Enugu township.

Moreover, Nike people are typical Igbo people with no outside influence. They are not into Kingship worship, and I doubt they had monarchy before the coming of the colonials.
Igwe Nike is a relic of colonial manipulation for easier exploitation, it probably grew out of the Warrant chief imposition by the colonial masters.

This is probably the same reason we don't have Eze PH, instead the various Ikwerre towns within the PH area have their own kings, who are not that influential, seeing as the Ikwerres are not into Kingship worship and were originally republicans.
