There is no Igwe of Enugu. Enugu is not a single town. What we have is Igwe Nike, Nike being one of the towns that make up Enugu township.

That is not to say their are no Royal heads of each Enugu local government area, just like Onitsha.

Everyone hold your peace!

It is a fact that most of these people claiming to have "most influential kings" are not proper Igbos in real sense.

Onitshas are hybrid Igbos whose ancestry is traceable to Benin; a fact that have never been disputed or refuted. They are even more comfortable identifying with Benins than Igbos. For the avoidance of doubt why is he called Agbogidi? What does that mean in Igbo?

As for Nri stock, facts kiss are beginning to emerge that they have Igala ancestory. They have been smart to deceive the authentic Igbos with their concocted history of ERI and GAD.

I strongly believe that "Igbo enweghi Eze". I make bold to say that most of you making claims of superiority of your king over others ARE NOT NDIGBO. You either ORU (hybreed) or MBIARA-ABIA (migrants).

This link shows the writings of a highly placed Igala palace official clearly stating that Nri was the elder brother of the Igala ancestor https://www.nairaland.com/1036147/family-bond-between-igala-igbos

This link reveals slightly how deep Nri goes

Obi of Onitsha dynasty spans over 200yrs. All those Igwe you mentioned are more or less village elders because when they meet Obi of Onitsha they will all have to kneel down.

I won't even go Igbo-wide,Anambra state alone will suffice.
The Onitsha monarchy, though presiding over a well known city, does not and cannot hold a candle to the Eze Nri and the Igwe Nnewi.
Being popular does not a custodian of culture nor foremost King make.Onitsha monarchy is but a baby placed beside the antiquity of Nri or Nnewi.
If any traditional ruler in Anambra should lay claim to being custodian of Igbo culture,it's the Eze Nri followed by Igwe Nnewi.
Go check how the Traditional Rulers Council in Anambra is ordered, backed by law, before you make more childish show of yourself.
Btw,the Emirship of Kano may be popular, but his overlord still remain the Sultan of Sokoto.
You would educate me over something you know nothing about, smh.
Let's not detract from celebrating a worthy monarch,an awesome heritage.Just cool it with the overly enthusiastic verbiage.

That is not true becos we have kings in Enugu, but they are not popular(powerful) for now.

It is down to personality and hard work. That Igwe (Obi of Onitsha) is tall, visible and influential. There have been other Obi of Onitsha but not this powerful.

The Obi of Onitsha is working and today is the acting Nri Priest or Eze Nri. (Custodian of Igbo Culture)

Where did you pull this last sentence from?

You don't get the point. I understand your position of the Eze Nri and rest of them. I am telling you that the most recognized kings in Nigeria are Obi of Onitsha, Emir of Kano, Ooni of Ife and Oba of Benin. These kings are classified as the first class kings in Nigeria. There influence is far reaching because some of them are in the major cosmopolitan cities like of Emir of Kano, Obi of Onitsha and Oba of Benin. Even of Oba of Lagos(stool) is equally kicking because of the city the kings live.

That is why seasoned historians seek out the Eze Nri when it comes to authentic Igbo cultural authorities as in https://www.nairaland.com/730776/eze-nri-enweleana-ii-goziri

That is why Israels ambassador in Nigeria pay Eze Nri visits regularly.
That is why the US ambassador visited Eze Nri sometime last year, bearing in my that Agukwu-Nri is just a village.

In my school, my teacher didn't mention names like Eze Nri, but names like Oba of Benin, Oba of Lagos, Obi of onitsha, Sultan of Sokoto etc. I asked my teacher : Which of them is connected to Ibo land. She told me: Obi of Onitsha is the only recognized king Nationally and Internationally that is from East, Others are just recognized within their vicinity.

Tell them especially those who carried it like trophy on their head. Obi of Onitsha is a first class king in his own right. The same goes for Eze Nri, Eze Aro, Igwe Orlu and Igwe Nnewi. Their jurisdiction ends in the locality they govern.

The Eze Nri, or indeed any of the UmuNri King's domain flows into other territories, but mainly in its priestly format.
●UmuNri are the owners of the deities used in naming the Igbo market days, and as long as other Igbos outside the Nri clans use those market days, then they are subliminally acquiescing to Nri astrological hegemony
●UmuNri introduced the ozo, nze, duru, mgburuichi (embrenche according to Olaudah Equiano) to Igboland
●UmuNri have the copyright in counting and announcing new years to Igbo, Igala, Bini peoples
●When an abomination is committed in Igboland, only an Nri priest is culturally high enough to lift it. If an abomination is committed in Onitsha, the obi of Onitsha or any of his titled men are not culturally significant enough to abrogate the alu. They have to seek out Nri priests to do that

There are many more duties Nri perform for Igbos, which is why kings from the Nri lineage are culturally more powerful than any other king.
In non-Nri domains, they operate more as priests

What is Igwe of Orlu?

Igwe of Orlu - is there any Igbo that doesn't know about the Igwe of Orlu?
The most famous Igwe of Orlu was a Senator that represented Orlu senatorial district in the first republic.

Until he died a few years ago, traditional rulers from different parts of Nigeria, including the Emir of Kano, came to Orlu nearly every year he celebrated his years on the throne.
His son that was about to take over his stool unfortunately died a Supreme Court judge.

A very relatively young son of the judge - a medical practioner - is the Igwe of Orlu today.
He doesn't get much into politics, perhaps that's why the likes of chino/OdenigboAroli the politician may not have heard about him.

Meanwhile, it's colourful the celebration of Obi of O'sha.

religious figurehead would make him a priest. Many villages followed Nri's version of Omenala as taught by Nri priests and came to Nri for spiritual cleansing and oath taking without being under Nri 'jurisdiction'. His role in our history and culture resembles an apex priest more than a King.

You are very correct. Let me put it more succinctly. Eze Nri was both a king and chief priest in the four principal Nri towns, but he was only a chief priest in non-Nri Igbo towns.

His priestly dominion even extended to Benin and Igala provinces

Ofodirinwa:
Monarchy makes a people docile, peasant like and subservient. The Obi of Onitcha is a title imported from Bini, the stool of Nri is that of a priest, not a king. The Eze Nri is traditional more like a priest or a Pope than a King. Most of the kingships in Igbo land are from the slave era and were strengthened/validated by the British because it made Igbo people controllable and sellable. Hardly something I aspire to celebrate. The Obi of Onitcha as a man is a man of great stature. His achievements as a man command the highest respect and he carries his culture with the utmost dignity and pride. No disrespect to him or other stools but the practice is very foreign and unnecessary. 99% of these ezes even fail to uphold their culture in their domains. A historic shrine was destroyed by a mad priest in Anambra last month. Tiv, Ijaw, Hausa and Nupe people knowing your name won't bring it back.
Typical hinterland igbo behaviour.Every time "ndigbo enwero eze, ndigbo enwero eze".Do you think Onitshans wanted to identify as igbo in the first place?precolonially, igbos without kings were at the bottom of the social hierarchy among tribes in the south, all they were good for was farmwork and thats why they were mostly sold as slaves by the Ijaw and Efiks.Onitshans got their social exposure from the great Benin Empire, which was majestic and very prestigious centuries back and hence with that kind of pride, they were condescending towards igbos-who could not properly organize themselves socially.Onitshan,Aniomas,Aros also grew wealthy from coastal trade in the past and had started wearing clothes when you bush igbo people were still running around naked with your änyi enwero eze" trope. The Akwa-Ocha cloth has been worn for centuries. Not that clownish Isi Agu atture!
Till date, the Enu Onitsha man wiil prefer his daughter not to marry from interior igboland but rather from Onitsha westwards(Anioma,Benin,Nigerdelta,Yoruba or even Igala)
Igbos and unnecessary pride......ordinary respect a grand King is hard, and you expect to produce the President of Nigeria? When you cant organize yourselves socially.Jokers

Do not mind these internet educated lads.
Being popular does not mean seniority or headship.

OfoIgbo:
The following Anambra traditional rulers are culturally above the Obi of Onitsha as there are tasks they can perform for Ndigbo that the Obi of Onitsha can never perform

1. Eze Enugwu-Ukwu na Igwe UmuNri
2. Igwe Nawfia na Igwe UmuNri
3. Igwe Enugwu-Agidi na Igwe UmuNri
4. Eze Nri (the custodian of Ofo Nri-Menri, the highest ofo in Igboland, jointly owned by the 4 principal Nri towns of Enugwu Ukwu, Nawfia, Enugwu Agidi and Agukwu-Nri)

Arguably, kingdoms like Oraeri and even places like Aguleri, Igbariam, Nnewi have powerful claims that will trump the Onitsha claim.
It was Zik who pushed the Onitsha monarchy when he held sway as a frontline nationalist, to the detriment of more deserving kingdoms, but traditionalists know the main traditional dawgz and the pretenders.
