I've not seen any of such kids so I can't really say for sure. dats more like my hypothesis.

Carrying the mothers' surname has nothing to do with whether the home is broken or that the mother is a single parent. It largely depends on how 'influential' cum 'powerful' the mother is. I have seen a family where their first child does not bear the 'conventional' surname of the family, while the other kids bear the father's. Just before you assume the child is not theirs, the child is theirs and is a splitting image of the father. Fair, tall, and reserved as the father.

Here's a shocking, practical, hypocrisy I have come to discover; a Nigerian man who fathers a child through an American (largely white) woman dare not whimper about the boy's surname, yet the same man would brag endlessly here in Nigeria over a child carrying his legacy.

Truth is, we are way behind despite claims of being educated and 'exposed'. Women are fast becoming conscious of being sidelined and this is unhealthy, according to a typical Nigerian man. He becomes threatened with the sophistication and intelligence of a female around him that disgust and 'disrespect' dominates his thought process.

A break from the norm, which is somewhat part of our debate is the woman's adoption of his husband's surname; a large number of women are now compounding their father's name to their husbands and the trend is fast becoming noticeable within the female ranks. Examples; Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Alison Madueke-Diezani, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, Sola Allison-Obaniyi among a host of others.

Even women who give birth out of wedlock often tag the surname of the man responsible for their plight no matter the hate. Why? Because most of them often fear that the child could intimated about his/her paternity even before the appropriate age.

PS: Influence and the position of the woman in the society, recognition and easier identity are some of the reasons a child could carry the mother's surname. We're far too enlightened to practice the "hey, go and pound yam because you belong in the kitchen mentality." I believe mutual understanding can birth anything. It is unfair to assume children who carry their mothers' surnames do so because they're conceived out of wedlock.
