A 25-year-old airport worker, Chinelu Nwobodo, has been admitted at the Isolo General Hospital after her neighbour, identified only as Iya Daniel, poured hot groundnut oil on her.

Our correspondent learnt that Chinelu, who was two months pregnant, stood a “50-50 chance of losing her baby”, as she had continued to bleed from her private parts due to complications.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the Imo State indigene and Iya Daniel were neighbours on Ogbomosho Street, Ijesha, in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

During a disagreement penultimate Friday, Chinelu was said to have kicked away some balls of puff-puff, sold by the suspect.

The suspect was reported to have valued the damage at N900 and threatened to unleash mayhem if the money was not paid.

The victim’s husband, Chigozie, reportedly promised to pay the money, as residents and neighbours urged the warring parties to embrace peace.

However, Iya Daniel was alleged to have confronted the victim in the evening of that day, demanding the money, with a pot of hot oil in her hand.
She was said to have emptied the content on the pregnant woman.

Chinelu’s husband told PUNCH Metro that trouble started after the landlord’s son came to tell him about his missing BlackBerry phone.

He said, “My landlord’s son came on Friday and said Iya Daniel told him that Akeem (another neighbour) stole my phone. Iya Daniel said my wife gave her the information.

“My wife denied sharing any information like that with Iya Daniel and she confronted Iya Daniel. There was an argument and in the process, my wife mistakenly kicked Iya Daniel’s puff-puff.

“This generated another round of argument as our neighbour insisted that my wife must pay N900 for the goods. I agreed to pay the money. We then went our separate ways.

“In the evening, when my wife returned from her place of work, Iya Daniel confronted her and poured the hot oil on her. I rushed her to a private hospital.”

He said he also reported the matter at the Ijesha Police Division, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Our correspondent was told that the victim was later transferred to the Gbagada General Hospital, where she was treated for the injuries to her face.

Chigozie said her condition later worsened as she started bleeding from the private parts.

He said, “The Gbagada General Hospital said I should do a scan. After the result came out, I was referred to another hospital because my wife started bleeding uncontrollably.

“I took her to the Isolo General Hospital and the doctors there have said the baby had a 50-50 chance of survival.”

A relative of the victim, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect’s family had supported Chinelu with only N40,000 since her treatment began.

“We have spent a lot of money and all they have done is to support us with N40,000 which was at the initial stage when we needed N80,000 to begin her treatment. Our priority now is Chinelu’s health and we need her to be in good health condition,” he said.

When our correspondent visited the house, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the two women had been having issues in the past, adding that the incident was a climax.

She said, “They used to be family friends. But they started having different issues and I think what happened that morning was the climax of it all.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, DSP Joe Offor, said the suspect had been released on bail.

He said, “The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station is trying to ensure that the matter is resolved, while investigations are ongoing.”

At times I just shake my head at the manners at which some people put themselves into serious trouble. There is nothing that can substitute PEACE. I am very sure that the both women want to flaunt their egos so that they won't tagged them COWARD. But now see where their muscle has landed them into. One is battling for her life which is very sure she will never be the same again and the other one just got herself a jail. May God help us so that we could be able to control our temper....
