BALLOSKI:
technocrats have political influence too.
My definition of technocrats are those who will be driven completely by professional ethics and not political considerations.

I'm not aware how much political influence the likes of NOI, Barth Nnaji, Olusegun Aganga, Akinwumi Adesina, etc had.

nonsense write-up.

- unbalanced and unfair criticism of the nomination of some of Nigeria's finest brains by the President.
- is the writer aware that Nigeria's balance sheet would be at its finest (despite low oil revenues) since independence at year-end.
- are they aware that he is fulfilling the constitutional requirement by appointing ministers across the federation?
- only technocrats can not drive the economy?
The author is one 'Alexis Akwagyiram'

The name says it all.

They cannot know anything about balance sheet at the end of the year as we are still in October and they are not God that sees future. By the way I don't see anything bias in that write up.

The cabinet is so good.

The country is upside down so much that it is those politicians as ministers that can make the necessary reform quickly.

The country is so bad that it is like at the tip of something and can tumble down at the slimmest mistake. The issue of falae kidnap was an example.

Every sector is bad and need quick reform.

cool

Buhari's selection process was complicated by the fact that he was constitutionally bound to select a minister from each of Nigeria's 36 states to reflect the character of a nation of 170 million people from 250 ethnic groups.

"Those expecting a list formed wholly of technocrats were being unrealistic," said Kayode Akindele, a political consultant and partner at private equity firm TIA capital. "He has a good mixture. You could have key portfolios with technocrats, which would help to drive reforms."

A cabinet that contains names like Dr Enelamah, Prof Adewole, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Prof Daramola, Dr Kachikwu, Kemi Adeosun, Prof Anwuka, Dr Aminat Ibrahim, Udo Udoma etc can't be refered to as a mediocre cabinet or a cabinet formed to compensate power blocks. Do they mean Udoma Udo Udoma lost all the knowledge he possessed simply because he ran for election and won twice? Do they mean Fayemi lost all his because he joined APC? or Amina Mohammed lost it because she worked with PDP? With this thinking, The stellar Dr Ibe Kachikwu will lose the tag of a technocrat by 2019 obviously. These guys sure need a dose of reality.

Even the politicians on the list like Fashola is a technocrat before being a politician and my man that they love to hate...Amaechi cheesy is no push over.

Buhari had to make a balance and i was pleasantly surprised he had the guts to drop names like Oyinlola, Bode Mustapha and Yemi Cardoso who were Obj's candidates then Tinubu's candidates like Wale Edun, Dele Alake and Rotimi Akeredolu.

Really those who were expecting a cabinet of 36 without politicians are very unrealistic. Even An American president won't try that otherwise Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell wouldn't have made it into George Bush Jr's cabinet.

One of the downsides of the democracy that the west is always so keen to preach to us about, is that you have to compromises. They can't eat their cake and have it, Even Obama and Cameron are forced to compromise and accommodate undesirables in their parties because without those undesirable elements and their support base they won't have the votes that brought them into power.

I am sure if Buhari had his way many of the people who brought him to power will be locked up in jail but his hands are tied. Politics is compromise, you can stay rigid in a country where everyone is corrupt and forever be in opposition or you make compromises get into power andmake some changes knowing you will never be able to make total reforms.

What we should not forget is that we had people with absolute power (Babangida and Abacha) who had the opportunity to make long lasting meaningful reforms in the polity without opposition or compromise but the only reforms they did were to their back accounts. If anything they laid the foundation for the mess we are in, a mess we will not even begin to recover from from another generation.

@ the bolded.

You are right. Those military generals ruled with decree yet failed woefully.
This country is primary destroyed by military generals.

So let's give dem d evidence of doubt nd let's pray 4 our country and stop complaining and criticiizing. GOD BLESS NIGERIA
Re: With Cabinet, Nigeria's Buhari Puts Party Before Reforms -REUTERS by Nobody: 11:37am On Oct 17, 2015
Let's be honest.....it was only during Army rule that you could get cabinets filled with technocrats.

Try that during a democracy....especially a Nigerian democracy, and you could get open revolt within your Party.

That said, it is still painful. Still.....Power, Education, health, sports, even info, mines, petroleum should be technocrat zones.

Atleast the selection was balanced.the politician or close associate will complement the technocrat vice versa.

Who asked you to wait? You couldve submitted your own list of technocrats.
Re: With Cabinet, Nigeria's Buhari Puts Party Before Reforms -REUTERS by Nobody:
lets not over emphasise the whole technocrat issue. The only ministries where you really need a technocrat is the Ministry of justice, maybe petroleum. What you need are people who are 1) people who are good managers 2 ) sincere 3) non corrupt 4) vision 5) intelligent 6) working for the interest of the people

Dangote did not study cement in school, Obafemi Awolowo was minster for finance during the civil war and we didn't borrow a penny, he was a lawyer!!! (Fashola take note) John Kerry secretary of state (foreign minster) is not a career diplomat, neither was Hilary Clinton! If you are appointed a minister and you cannot grasp the workings of your ministry, then it means you are dull and if you are given a portfolio in your field you'd probably fail.

I think people misuse the term technocrat when in fact what they mean is people with a track record that are not part of the system. i.e people who are likely to usher a fresh way of doing things and have no dark clouds hanging over them.

A politician might be a technocrat just as a technocrat still qualifies as a politician...Kayode Fayemi, Fashola, Udoma, Ngige, Kachikwu and a host of others on the list are technocrats in their own rights...

You only mentioned 4 whereas PMB already has prof. Daramola, enelamah, kemi adeosun, dr kachikwu, prof adewole, prof anwuka, dr aminat ibrahim, dr enahaire. That is 8 already of the popular ones. There are still some from the north that are relatively unknown.

Now tell me apart from NOI, how many professors were in GEJ's cabinet.
