What Happened To Enugu Coal Mines? by zuchyblink(op): 9:36am On Oct 30, 2015
Do you know that Coal supplies 46 per cent electricity in the
United States and over 60 per cent
electricity in China – it is callous to abandon
such golden treasury.
A country which has such treasury coupled with oil and gas is still battling with a meager 5000MW.
What do you think is wrong with Nigeria?

Corruption and poor leadership

The coal lying unused in Enugu is waiting for government to decide to exploit it for the good of the country. Sad that many will prefer not to see it exploited even if it means Nigeria's electricity problems are thereby not solved.

You simply cannot over harvest the natural resources in southern Nigeria.

Useless country

The difference between America and Nigeria is that in the United States, the land under which the coal sits would be in private hands, and the decision to exploit it would be purely a commercial matter, with the only concern of the government being that taxes are properly paid. In Nigeria, on the other hand, the government lays claim to all mineral resources discovered, even those under "private" land, so there is no incentive for legitimate private companies to get involved, even though the government is too busy fighting over oil rents to bother with anything else.

As long as Nigeria has stupid laws like the Land Use Act that undermine the security of private property rights, or the laws that give the federal government ownership over any resource discoveries made in the country, resources like the Enugu coal fields will never be properly exploited. Nobody is going to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into mining coal, just so some thieves in Abuja can come and claim the rewards of all the hard work.

The sad thing is that these coal deposits can solve Nigeria's electricity problem, since there is too much competition for gas on which Nigeria is overdependent on for electricity.

Bombing coal power plants is much harder than pipeline. Nigeria a sad country. Options galore but can't figure out how to exploit then due to hatred of free market.

The truth is that we currently live in a zero sum society where the gain of one region is widely seen as a loss to other regions by a large number of the establishment. Until that mindset is corrected, the ordinary Nigerian, nay everyone will keep suffering unnecessarily.

How come Larfarge, Dangote, Ibeto are mi mining limestone and converting it to cement and thereby making billions in profit? Find another excuse, not that I support the land use law. But what's the benefits of transferring ownership to another set of thieves at the state level?

I think your proving his point. If only a few benefit while sector languishes. Then his arguements wasnt a state level control of resources. It was for common man to have rights aka you, or anyone in country willing to buy.

Mineral sector is not even 5% of economy. The government is reason because they own, control, and regulate it exclusively. Even government recognized their folly that's why they tried a few reforms in 2007 with Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007. In an undisputed fact the Nigerian Governments policy is reason sector is weak.

This country is a scam. The idea is to hold everybody to the ground to the benefit of an opportuned few.

Can you read? Where did I mention transferring anything to "the state level"? If I believed in any such thing, I wouldn't oppose the silly "Land Use Act" that gives state governors all power over "private" land. The point is to give private individuals strong property rights over anything they find on their land. If tomorrow you find gold, coal or whatever on land you can prove you own, then you should be free to mine those resources (or sell your land to someone else to mine) without worrying about any level of government stepping in and seizing your land or what you found within it. As long as you aren't polluting land you don't own or spewing harmful emissions into the air, the only demand the local, state or federal government should be able to make is that you pay taxes on your profits like any other company.

As for Lafarge, Dangote et al, just because a few people managed to use their political contacts to extract sweetheart deals doesn't mean the system is working properly. You might want to ask Ibeto how he feels about the many times the FG has tilted the playing field against him in Dangote's favor; you should also ask why Dangote's Nigerian operations are 6x more profitable than the ones in other African countries. Reputable companies with deep pockets have little interest in doing business in countries where such things are allowed to happen.

Everyone is suffering because of this. Many have died due to epileptic power supply to our hospitals. Ask bloggers who can't get as much page views for their ads.

If what you are saying is true then its a real shame because government's duty is to solve problems of the people.

Nigeria is a Satan republic.

They would rather stay in darkness and poverty than use coal to boost electricity generation if the coal in question is in Igboland.

The same people are celebrating coal discovery in Sokoto as if it is a discovery in a new country! What informed their abandonment of the coal already in Enugu which is reputed to be about the cleanest coal in the world and rejoicing for the one to be discovered in Sokoto?

My brother it is time we forget the federal government ever existed and started to solve our problems our selves. The more we depended on them the more they want to shove it to our face that they can frustrate Us.

It's not that we don't want to do things by ourself since the government (all tiers) refuse to act, but the government will work against you with those "laws in our constitution".

Example a state road is bad like for decades, then the companies in that environs team up to fix it and maintain in other to reduce the cost of their trucks/trailer maintenance indirect reduce cost of production and the masses will also benefit from road also. The government stopped it and threaten with court order.
The roads are still like that since then e.g Agbara, Ogun State

Sokoto people (and other northerners from that zone) were celebrating the discovery of coal in their domain and honestly, I see no reason why they shouldn't. They believe it would favour them somehow and who knows, it actually may.

On the other hand, I'm not sure I underatand your logic of comparing the little coal found in Sokoto to the proven massive coal reserves in Enugu. What exactly is stopping Enugu from exploiting the coal in it's domain presently?... Is it the Hausas from Sokoto?
