Why are u guys always using imperial units like inches/feets when we are supposed to use metric units like mm, m, cm etc. I know are being taught to use metric in my school....... wassup with all this imperial? |

I've used feet/inches for 30 years straight, not going to be changing anytime soon. In fact my architect drew my plans in both measurements. The silly (to me) meters/millimeters for the approval stuff and the feet/inches for the working stuff for me. |

EgunMogaji:Try the native pear tree or udala/agbolumo tree. Always very imposing....but expect bird visitors when they star fruiting in about 7 years. |

Don't use malina wood for roofing o. Milina wood is good for furniture work but for bad for roofing The problem with malina is poor tensile stress perpendicular to its axis. It break easily when you load it or when the carpenters are still work on it. It is risky to work with and not that durable over a long period of time. The best roofing truss wood is apuntu (igbo name) or ayin (yoruba) or iron wood in pidgin. All type of wood need to be treated to guide against future deterioration |

Avoid loud and aggressive persons They are "vexations" to the spirit Do not compare yourself with others Else, you may become "vain and bitter" For, always there will be greater And lesser persons, than yourself Trust in God but always "lock your door" As far as possible ..... without surrender Be on good terms with all persons Speak your "truth" .... "quietly and clearly" And listen to others, for everyone has their own story! Happy Weekend to everybody Lastpage! |

I find that raising plants does take time and patience, nursery beds, constant watering/manure etc. Also being a lagos boy, in a crowded /polluted city like this, there is simply no time/space for it. Apart from the odd flower pots and vegetation by the side of the parking drive, that is it. Also, for my block of flats, I am not even considering any vegetation, just one other thing to worry about. Anyone that needs greenery should either go to national stadium or back to their village. just my 2 cents. |

Melina isn't to be used all through for Roofing. In my own opinion, Melina is the best wood for Nogging and perhaps Purlin, followed by Ogborugboru.. It is malleable. Doesn't crack when nailed and doesn't stress the Carpenters nailing it. Some woods do not need treatment AT ALL. it's just to add power to power that I encourage people to treat their wood. |

PeoplesArmy:Agbalumo tree can grow very tall and provide a very big canopy BUT its leaves are very small so you have pockets of sunshine under the canopy here and there.. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Dieumerci(m): 12:56pm On Nov 08, 2015 |
KolaShangOne:Long time Engr Kola. Thanks for your response. Could you please mention those wood that would not need treatment at all. |

Dieumerci:Been a little busy. Wood matter. We have quite a number. Over 50 diff types of hardwood. Different people / Carpenters have preference to a particular combination of wood types. We have Ayin, Akun, Pepe, Ogburgburu, Itara, Melina, Iroko, Koko gbo is a fine wood too. |

KolaShangOne:Agbalumo tree do shed leaves which require regular clearing. I have 3 in my compound that I had to cut off. Not a good one for a bungalow. I don't want any tree as overhang near my roof.
