rexbuton:The things we see here are sometimes unimaginable. As a Bini, I can understand the feeling of importance by some people to put us down and deny anything to us. To the uninitiated, the only difference I know between Esan and Bini is the IGBABONELIMHIN masquerade! |

bokohalal:It's really sad! I don't try to convince them or refute their assumptions, numerical advantage and the now famous igbo 'likes technology' always wins. There are more differences between bini and esan, though they are too technical for the uninitiated. And there are very few binis on NL, I only know you and physicsqed, you know more? |

rexbuton:thanx for the enlightenment..I ve not being to their remote villages in edo state, I only stays at lagos street back then in benin city though. In regards to ikwerres, ogba, ikas, this re one big tribes still being confused about their heritage and the adoption of igbos languages. Some will tell you categorically they re igbos while some will tell you they re benin. But where the problems lies is because of their languages which re more similar to that of ndigbos. Though I am not denying the influence of benin empire by then but the evidence which I relied on is that, ndigbos was there and still there before the coming of benin people and that s why the language of ndigbo still has more advantage that dealt with any incoming languages from benin interactions except the ikas and ukwuani which have some forms of igbos and benin languages in their dialects. Anyway let me check your profile now to get your thread and read. Knowledge is power. |

slimfresh:He did not say the words are Yoruba, but Urhobo. By the way, in Yoruba, you can change a verb into a noun by adding "I" in the front of the verb words most cases. |

IlekeHD:Ileke, you are in no position to accuse someone of being a tribalist. Oba being an Edo word is an old argument that will rage on forever between Yorubas and Edos. But to a neutral like an Igbo, it's not that hard to see that Oba is an Edo word. Though I don't expect Yorubas to accept that. |

Goodboiy:In that case, it is different from 'head' as in used for part of the body. You need to update your list accordingly or specify which 'head' in your list you were referring to. |

Goodboiy:Since you admit that Ovie is the official word for king in Urhobo, Oba then should not be on your list. From the phrase you gave, the Urhobos use Oba risi as a phrase but rarely use Oba to refer to their king right? |

bigfrancis21:Thanks for Moving this thread to the front page. but lemme make some correction.. The word I used re used in Urhobo, The people who said otherwise know nothing about my tribe.. Am Urhobo and I can proof the word most claim re false Oba : We call king Ovie , But in some sentence we use Oba tp refer to King.. like 'Oba risi' meaning king of the word. Ego : Looking at this word closely you can see the similarity with Igho used in Urhobo. Olori: Most Urhobo On this forum , am really Disappointed in them.. Olori is a Popular word used in Urhobo especially those from Ughelli.. we have The Olori Family In Ughelli .. Olori means Head of a place or family or group .. in Yoruba it means same. EWa : I already explained this earlier |

IlekeHD:I did before. In case you still need it, here it is again. I posted this article to Edo net sometime ago. I have reworked and added a few things in view of the ongoing debate over prostitution by Edo girls.Shouldn't you be fighting Edos for insisting that Oba is an Edo word rather than debating this with Igbos? Isn't it your greatest folly to be doing this? ![]() |

Goodboiy:You are both right. Olori - Head of a place or a leader Olori - Queen or wife of a King It depends on how you pronounce it. |

Ihuomadinihu:That is a lie from the pit of hell. Urhobos are not linked with Igbos in any way shape or form. The Urhobo language has some similarities with Esan and Etsako also Isoko since they are almost the same. For you to claim that shows how ignorant you really are. |
| Re: Some Igbo/yoruba Word Used In Urhobo/Isoko Language by Nobody: 8:00pm On Nov 08, 2015 |
bigfrancis21:In Urhobo we still call king Orodje .. but ovie is the popular one.. As for the OBA we use it as statement.. If we can use it to Refer to God as the King of the world, Can't we also use it to refer to Human ? |
| Re: Some Igbo/yoruba Word Used In Urhobo/Isoko Language by bigfrancis21(mod): 8:01pm On Nov 08, 2015 |
Goodboiy:If olori is used especially in Ughelli as you said, then it is not popular all over Urhobo land as you say and should not be a 'standard' urhobo word. Towns or areas within a linguistic area often borrow words from neighbouring towns but remain unique to that area. The Abiriba and Ohafia people of Abia state share a few words in common with the Ibibios of Akwa Ibom state but these words are restricted only to those area and it would be wrong to claim that word as 'standard' Igbo word over the more generally used Igbo words common to most Igbo groups. Thus, in this instance, olori can be said to be popular to the Ughelli area and not quite known all over Urhobo land. Your fellow Urhobos have corrected you on this. Like I mentioned earlier, specify what 'head' you are referring to in your wordlist or take it out completely because an Urhobo speaker just corrected you that 'head' as in part of the body is Uyovwe in Urhobo and not olori. I have an Urhobo course mate and I can quickly confirm from her what 'head' is in Urhobo. |

Oredo is not a dialect, it is the main benin location proper, the city centre. The language spoken is still the edo language or igodomiogodo as we prefer to call it. I hope you've really been to benin or you're not just pulling my legs! Everything you say about benin is FALSE!
