They want us to continue to be import dependent. They then reported us to a ‘world’ trade organization which they control. Any sensible government knows they should try to make exports more than imports. The whole of Africa should harden their policies against the west and EU then trade with Russia and China. Lets see how the west will get the resources they want |

These countries need to wail us a river. Are they not rejecting many of our non-oil exports on basis their own self imposed quality standards. What about their refusal to trade in our currency on any level? |

OnReflection:hello sir...since you well versed in international economics and global trade...the guy said "renaissance"- and that is a French word meaning "REBIRTH"- a phenomenon that was taking place in 15th century Europe..now was as regards the economic issue...i dnt really think you fully understand the word "Economic growth"...you are approaching the term with quite a parochial perspective sir...what i was trying to say ....since Nigeria and South Africa are the major actors driving the economic renaissance in Africa...so what i was trying to say is that among the nations that are termed "potential economic power(sometimes called E7;And sometimes labelled BRICS and the other MINT" ...so sir my question is this can these two african coutries match the economic renaissance of say Turkey or the south-east Asian giant-Indonesia....not to talk of the way advanced economies of China...Mexico Brazil......so sir please if i was saying thrash please kindly elucidate...thanks |

The most d shocking part of this article is the statement attributed to the Nigerian representative. The guy was openly criticizing the CBN in front of the WTO! That guy should be SACKED immediately! Isn't he aware that he is there to represent Nigeria's interests? It's akin to the US ambassador to Nigetia criticizing America's policies while stationed in Nigeria. That dude needs to learn the basics about diplomacy |

tinkinjow:let me give you an insight, thailand import rice to nigeria and as at GEJ rice was N8500 now with PMB preventing them not to exchange a discounted dollar at central bank rice is N10500 wholesale price and is not yet xmas.which means you are paying N2000 more on decision. PMB quick response approach as if nigeria is a family house has made 41 items importers or company usind those item that has since incrreased to layoff workers. Well is just temporary, pmb can not continue like this, otherwise other countries will gang up against us by stop importing and you yet to make common steel spoon,so stop saying what you dont know. Country develop when you export more, not try to control impoet at the detriment of your citizen |

When we go to G7 begging for help or collect money from America this is the type of mess it would get us into. They are ganging up because they know that it`s a presidency they can mess with. If Buhari has kept all of them at arm`s lenght they wouldn`t have tried it. Now that we have seen the result of cozying up to slave masters I guess the Presidency would now reach out to Russia and China and show that Nigerian political elites are not as dull as they look |

Favparis:U sound like a bread hawker on the street. The policy is in the best interest of nigeria and has long run real benefits. Europe and America will always oppose it. GMB is doing great in that area. |

CSTR2:The legal/official opening of borders was the smartest move to make at the time. Imported rice illegally finds its way to our markets through our porous borders and VERY corrupt customs officers. With this move, hide and seek action films and bribery is reduced. You take your goods legally and lawfully through the normal routes and pay a lower fee than the former bribes, seizing, and man know man escapades. This of course increases government revenue and allows for competition. When local produced rice is quality and cheap, we'll buy and eat. |
| Re: United States, EU Report Nigeria To World Trade Organization. by Image123(m): 9:47pm On Nov 12, 2015 |
emmykk:This is not PMB's fault but currency devaluation. If a bag of rice was $50 last year for instance, businessmen need about 8000naira to buy one bag at about 160/$. But now, the same businessmen need 10,000naira to buy the same bag of rice at 200/$. This is a situation PMB met on ground. Obviously, things imported will be more expensive plus the jara market people will put to it to maximize their profit blaming others. |

Image123:this is even after the devaluation, what buhari is doing is that he is increasing foriegn reserve at the detriment of the masses.he should unturn that is evil foriegn policy to align with what is obtainable world wide. If he want any items excluded from forex transactions he should first of all be providing that goods of services in abundances first. |

The way some Buhari-Maniacs hail every dumb policy this old man dishes out to us nauseates me. Is he banning importation of those items, what measures has he put in place first to ensure the adverse effect does not make nonsense of all he aims to achieve? Why is he so obsessed with saving foreign earnings for Nigeria without anything to show as gains of stashing up such fund? He did the same in his first tenure as Head of state by jailing and recovering "stolen" fund from politicians. At the end of the day, the money was stashed up for Babangida to squander. He is at it again. At most 8 years after, another will take over to help himself with it. It makes no sense unless he starts using the fund to provide infrastructures that will out-live him. The masses have suffered so much to further bear the burden of knee-jerk policies without adequate adverse effect absorber in place first. That's economics. |

Na wa o. You guys are here haggling over scraps when fuel subsidies continue to suck away our life blood. You think GMB has the slightest clue of what the poor are going through? Aso Rock insulates you from that sort of news- especially since his party is too scared to give him constructive criticism (what a bunch of ninnies). And no one seems to have understood that Saudi Arabia imports EVERYTHING- excluding oil, but including water. Or that a single world class refinery can earn us huge sums- especially with low crude prices, because more nations can buy your refined products. Why are we so blind? Anyhow, latest by feb next year all of us will be singing only one tune with one voice. That's when the world will TRULY start laughing at us. |

It has always been known that international trade regulations would catch up one day with the policy of reduced foreighn exchange access. I sympathize with PMB , but under the WTO agreements and charter, we cannot be seen t block access to goods and services of other countries. So the blockade on access to foreign currency would have to be removed so that "free" trade would continue |

emmykk:Of course it has to be after the naira devaluation, it is the after effects of the devaluation. You need more naira than before to buy or import goods. The CBN policy is not at the detriment of the masses, the masses won't have headache because of imported toothpick, private jet or Indian incense. BTW, these things are not banned, the government simply said if you want them, find dollars elsewhere. We(CBN) cannot continue depleting reserves so that you can import private jet and toothpick. |

Thats why they always hated the idea that Nigeria is Africa's giant. Just because we will stop importing uncle Ben's rice and FG Wilson Generators from these countries, they start making noise all over the place. This is the first time the will fail to impose economic hit men on Nigeria and thats the reason for the noise. Very soon they will start recommending another NOI to us. Carry on with these policies Godwin Emefiele and the CBN team. Look for another 1000 products to ban from FX bidding then they will know that Nigeria is ready to do anything to get out this mess. |
