I am Rivers Ijaw and whereas I always thought some parts of Rivers State academically should be classified as Igbo (Ikwere and especially Etche and Omuma) they (Especially Ikwere) claim not to be Igbos so I tend to leave that alone. I am Rivers Ijaw and not on any side of that argument.
But I will say that if they choose to cast their lot with Rivers State and expunge all connections with Igbo, then so be it (in the spirit of self-determination).
I however must mention that the Ikweres vary from the Igbos to a greater degree than the people of Omuma and Etche and significant among these differences is the difference in method of thinking

I agree that the mindset of most Ikwerre people is quite different from the hinterland Igbos and other subgroups like the Omuma and Etche. The former tend to be laid back and dreads competition, why the latter is success oriented and materialistic. The Ikwerres cherish a space where they can move at their own pace without any external pressure. They hate to be dominated by other progressive groups and are pretty much content being in Rivers state - a state with less Ijaw and Igbo political influence. These are some of the attributes of the Ikwerre.
Be that as it may, we understand the Ikwerre more better. Even with the seeming difference, they too have come to understand us. We wouldn't mind conceeding a whole lot for them in a new Biafra. ala China and Hong Kong. But if they decide through a referendum to remain in Nigeria or join the Niger-Delta republic - something I doubt happening - then surely, we shall respect that decision.
