Former investment banker Kemi Adeosun has been sworn in as the new finance minister for Nigeria during an official ceremony in the capital Abuja. Adesoun replaced Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former World Bank managing director who served as finance minister for two terms.

Adeosun, 48, was born in Ogun state in 1967 and is the third of four children. She was raised both in Nigeria and in London. She graduated in applied economics at the University of East London and obtained a postgraduate diploma in public financial management from the University of London.

Once again we see a clear example of how things work in the zoo called Nigeria compared to developed countries. In the developed world(USA for example, after all we claim to be using their system) portfolios are assigned to the minister designates BEFORE screening. That way the Senators can ask the appropriate questions. In fact in the US it's the related Senate committee that does the first screening, so for example in this case, it would first be the Senate finance committee that would do detailed screening of the candidate, they then have to vote and only if a majority approve, is the candidate then presented to the full Senate for a final vote.
Now if we had followed a similar track, the Senate finance committee could have grilled the lady in depth about her experience, stewardship of Ogun states finances and plans for the Nigerian economy.
As it is we don't have a clue what here abilities are or are not. We can only pray that she's up to the job, because Nigeria faces, some very tough times ahead, with the sustained drop in the price of crude.
