My "Blackout" Experience by tk4rd: 7:29pm On Nov 15, 2015
It all started on Sunday 8th November 2015..
I needed to withdraw money with my ATM around 5pm in the evening, but the ATM refused paying me. So I decided to go to my bank first thing on Monday Morning.
Monday morning, 9th of November, I arrived at my bank as early as 7:45am so that I could be among the first customers to be treated for the day. Some people were there already. They had same problem too.
At 8:00am, they opened the door.. We all rushed in.
Straight to the Customer Service desk, we were being attended to.. All of us really had the same problem.
This is the conversation that took place between the very first customer and the Customer Service Staff who was sitting behind the Customer Service desk:
Staff: Can I have your account number.?
Customer: See it here. (dropped a paper where he wrote his account number on the desk)
Staff: (checked on computer and replied) Your account does not have BVN linked to it.
Customer: But I have my BVN. I did it here, right here on your desk. I have even linked my BVN with all my accounts in other banks, and they are paying. Why is it that my main bank didn't link.?
Staff: You didn't come back after you have gotten your BVN so that you can link it.
Customer: But I submitted all my account numbers when I was enrolling for the BVN. Why didn't you link automatically.?
Staff: Well, I guess you have your BVN now. Just write down your account numbers and your BVN. (Raised her head and faced the rest of the customers) Please while coming to this desk, write down your account number and your BVN number on the paper given to you. If you don't have your BVN and you want to enroll, please come back on Friday by 3pm..
.....
As we were busy trying to write down our account numbers and BVN, the lights in the banking hall went out. That was around 8:47am.
We managed to write down the needed details using the little lights from our phones.
Things got worse when, after five minutes, the power was not back yet. The whole banking hall was becoming stuffy and rowdy. People were murmuring and cursing in their native languages.
A staff of the bank came to address us, but it seemed like his addressing the customers made the matter worse. The whole place became so noisy and heated up. Before we knew it, everybody was already sweating under the condition. Some guys were busy recording the whole confusion on their phones.
After about One hour of the blackout, with all the sweat and the noise that had already gotten me so uncomfortable, and with no hope of the lights coming back on; I decided to take my leave.
It was then that I discovered that the front automatic door was no more working, so I was directed to the back door. That was where I saw something that got me more angered. Almost all the bank staff were there at the backyard of the bank and gisting and laughing away their time like nothing happened.
When I asked them why they left us in darkness just like that, the reply I got was: "We can't say exactly what went wrong with the generator oo"
