One person was feared dead yesterday
while 20 others sustained serious injuries
following a bloody clash that broke out
between two government revenue agents at
the busy King Square in Benin City, the Edo
State capital, causing pandemonium as
traders fled and abandoned their wares.
Indication emerged early in the morning of
dangers ahead when some youths were
sighted with cutlasses and clubs at the
Oredo Council secretariat.
It was learnt that the clash which started at
about 11:30am was between those
authorized to collect revenue in the council
and some youths of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) who claimed to have the
authority of the state government to take
over revenue collection in the council.
The original revenue collectors in the council
were appointed by the suspended chairman
of the Council, Mr Osaro Obaze, who
distributed the revenue in a manner to assist
all party leaders in Oredo.
Leadership gathered that it was these
original revenue collectors, who are agents
of different political leaders in the council,
that resisted the attempt to take over
revenue collection by some youths loyal to
the APC.
The commissioner of police, Chris Ezike,
when contacted, said some of the youths
sustained injuries and urged the state
government to come up with a decision on
who is the authentic revenue collector so as
to avoid future crisis.
According to him, “One of the groups said it
has authority of the state government; one
said it has authority of the LGA. Some
people were assaulted and I have asked my
DCO in New Benin to investigate the matter
and go after the suspects who assaulted
those people.
“But the fundamental issue is, who collects
the revenue? And I think it is in the purview
of the state government to make that
decision.”
