ENUGU—The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, yesterday, called on the National Assembly to reject any bill intended to allow the creation of grazing fields for herdsmen. The Christian body in a statement described such move as a wicked and abominable act.

In a statement by the Chairman of CAN in the South-East geopolitical zone, Most. Rev. David Eberechukwu, he said herdsmen were already doing grievous harm to their host communities and that creating such fields would amount to pouring fuel unto the fire.

He noted that,”currently, the situation is unbearable where they have become armed robbers, kidnappers, terrorists and warriors in their host communities.

“Those agitating for this wicked move should desist from it. We call on the National Assembly to desist from such a bill and see that they do not create problems that have no solution.”

Instead of grazing fields, CAN said it was recommending modern ranches, stressing, “this is every- where in developed countries. It will provide employment and education to the staff of the ranches.

“It is an abomination to ask states to give lands to a group of people whom you know will cause famine and war in communities.

“We call on all to reject this wicked move and do things to protect their territories from suffe ring an untold and untimely death, problems and wanton destruction of lives and properties

Don't know why there should always be religious and ethnic sentiments in everything in this country. Once the program does not displace some people to resettle others,creating the grazing field will make it possible to be able to prosecute any herder that moves beyond the stipulated Boundary, helps in national integration because some of those herders may like to settle if they have a place they can settle unhindered, even reduce the cost of livestock products in places where it is usually high because the product
is now nearer to where it is needed.
