What do you mean by 'feature phones'? Do you mean the low end java/symbian phones?

OP pls modify your title so we can understand your post. There are FLAGSHIP phones and others.

But the feature phones never had HD screens, quad core processors, 2gb ram, 5 inch+ displays.. Why not try and "install" need for speed on Nokia E71 and see how far..

I don't need to own one to know. U can hardly see someone own a Ferrari for 15 years. They usually sell it off after using it for 2-3 years. And they don't drive it everyday, only occasionally. On the other hand u can drive a corolla everyday for 20 years and it will still remain strong.

Most have no touchscreen feature.

Your explanation is faulty .. They don't drive it that long cos' of maintenance issues . . It costs north of 3 Million naira per year to maintain
a Ferrari to factory standards . . . Keep spending about 3M per year for 15 years (subject to inflation) and see how much that is. .
A corolla on the other hand can be maintained with as low as just 50k per year . . (2 oil changes, 2 brake pad changes and some minor bolts here and there). . .
So you see why most extremely expensive cars are not driven by one person for so long . . . .
It was actually bought to show off in the 1st place and after 1,2 or 3 years, the appeal dies and it starts becoming a money pit . . and you sell it off . .

U can easily find a corolla that has 1million mileage, but if u ever find a Ferrari that has clocked 300,000 mileage then it would have become a money pit, a no go area, nobody wants it. So tell me which one lasts longer? U can drive a corolla everyday, u only drive a Ferrari once in a while, for show off.

Same thing with smartphone, it costs 14k to change the screen of my sister's Sony xperia z, that is a 3 yr old phone. Why would she spend that much money to fix an outdated phone when she can add a little more money and get a more recent phone?

You are missing the point . . Pound for pound, the Ferrari or any other super car will outdo a Corolla . . .
Disposing it for financial issues is not the same thing as disposing it for unreliablity

U are the one missing the point. U won't find someone that own a Ferrari as an ONLY car, but u find people owning a corolla as an ONLY car. WHY? If a Ferrari is that reliable why can't people own it as an ONLY car?. Because they know it will only take a Ferrari expert to fix it when it breaks down and might take weeks or months before it gets running again, whereas every Tom dickk and Harry can fix a toyota. That is reliability. U can drive a corolla with all the malfunction lights showing on the dash, but u can't try that with a Ferrari. I need to take it to a specialist when there's a single malfunction light on the dash abs that might take weeks to fix. U can pour a cheap coolant or ordinary water in the radiator of a corolla, try that with a Ferrari. U can even pour a cheap engine oil or transmission fluid in a corolla and it will still run. Try that with a Ferrari.

Now back to the topic which says why do feature phones last longer than smartphone. That is because smartphones has a lot of features than ordinary phones. More features mean more internals, more processors , bigger and more expensive screens . it will be easier and cheaper to fix a Nokia 3310 than an iPhone. U can easily get a cheap charger or battery for Nokia 3310 whereas it will cost 3 times the price of a 3310 to buy a battery for an iPhone. So it is not very wise fixing these smartphones when they start aging.

Look at the rate at which these smartphone companies make their phones...eg Apple...each year a new iPhone is out... its all about profit...if I can use a smartphone efficiently for 4-5 years...y do I need to get a new phone after 1 year or 2 years...smartphones aren't made to last that long(3 years etc) so that after a few months or a year...the user can get a new smartphone...which puts money in their pockets...
